Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's actually:

"Vietnam, fish and chips, Italian opera"

My reasoning is that each refers to a specific place–Vietnam, England, and Italy–whereas "fishing trips" doesn't really hold any cultural meaning.
Besides that, I love the song. :3 Though I'm still unclear on the meaning.

Patrick Stump – Everybody Wants Somebody Lyrics 12 years ago
I, tonight, I feel like being alone
If you don't mind, if you don't mind
Would you please be so kind
To close the door behind you

It's been a long, long time
Since I've had this line of doubt
Out loud

So I deny I feel like
I feel like, I feel, baby now

Everybody wants somebody
Who doesn't want them,
Or wants somebody else, baby
You want somebody?
Oh, you want someone?
Somebody else, somebody else

Listen up
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get

A young man is a pull pin
Looking for a grenade, yeah
A young woman will drive you places
You never meant to go
But epiphany is such a cliche
Well, there's plenty of fish in the wrong sea
Like there's a premium on mystery again

Hold me, distract me
Dress me up in bubbles, baby
Save me from the troubles
Of my own skin, yeah

Everybody wants somebody
Who doesn't want them
Or wants somebody else, baby
You want somebody?
Oh, you want someone?
Somebody else, somebody else

Listen up
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get

So I, tonight, I feel like
I feel like, I feel

Everybody wants somebody
Who doesn't want them
Or wants somebody else, baby
You want somebody?
Oh, you want someone?
Somebody else, somebody else
(Somebody, somebody)

Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get

Everybody
Everybody wants somebody
Who doesn't want them
Or wants somebody else, baby
You want somebody?
Oh, you want someone?
Somebody else, somebody else

Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get
Don't get hurt, don't you get hurt
Don't get hurt, don't you get

Patrick Stump – Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers) Lyrics 12 years ago
One more shot then I'm quitting forever
Cross my heart, cross my fingers
Cross my heart, cross my fingers

Woke up this morning, room is spinning
I don't remember what I did last night
Beg the ceiling for forgiveness
'Cause I don't wanna remember what I did last night

When I was drunk I might have said some things I didn't mean
Yeah
And there's nothing wrong with you
It's something wrong with me

I'm running dry
And how oh how come no one believes me?
Believe me

Step one: drink
Step two: make mistakes
Step three: pretend you don't remember
Step four: drink a little more
Step five: I need to run dry
I need to run dry

My liver's killing me
But willingly I'm gonna tell whoever asks that I feel alright
Beg the ceiling for forgiveness
'Cause I don't wanna remember what I did last night
When I was drunk I might have said some things I didn't mean
Yeah
And there's nothing wrong with you
It's something wrong with me
Yeah

Step one: drink
Step two: make mistakes
Step three: pretend you don't remember
Step four: drink a little more
Step five: I need to run dry
I need to run dry

I'm gonna take one more shot
Then I'm quitting forever
Cross my heart, cross my fingers
Cross my heart, cross my fingers

I'm gonna take one more shot
Then I'm quitting forever
Cross my heart, cross my fingers
Cross my heart, cross my fingers

I get drunk a little too much for it to be healthy
No one wants to tell me
Whiskey, I'm trying to cut-cut-cut back, back
Wine, I'm trying to cut-cut-cut back, back

They say everything in moderation
But I drink you under the table
I'm not just drunk
I, I really think I'm in love with you, baby

(Okay, I really am just drunk)

Step one: drink
Step two: make mistakes
Step three: pretend you don't remember
Step four: drink a little more
Step five: I need to run dry
I need to run dry

I'm gonna take one more shot
Then I'm quitting forever
Cross my heart, cross my fingers
Cross my heart, cross my fingers

I'm gonna take one more shot
Then I'm quitting forever
Cross my heart, cross my fingers
Cross my heart, cross my fingers

(Impress me, good luck)
(Impress me, good luck)
(Impress me, good luck)
(Impress me, good luck)

I'm not from Williamsburg or Silver Lake
Does anybody have any other obvious complaints?
Stop trying, 'cause I can almost hear you trying to hard, yeah

Just saw a shadow of the freak you're in the night
Something on human feet from the seat of the crime
Those little flashes just wreak havoc on the mind

I don't have to prove myself to you
I don't have to prove myself to you
You're standing with your arms crossed
Nose turned up like you're saying "impress me"
(Good luck)
Impress me
(Good luck)
And I don't have to prove myself to you

They got the search party looking for the ghost of the child
But what if it grew up?
He didn't die
And he's all I want to get the evil(?) little feeling
Like you're under dead eyes, yeah

To those who all agree(?), you just might exist
But come in in the morning if their misconceptions still persist
Some days I may express myself in curious ways

I don't have to prove myself to you
And I don't have to prove myself to you
You're standing with your arms crossed
Nose turned up like you're saying "impress me"
(Good luck)
Impress me
(Good luck)
And I don't have to prove myself to you

I don't have to prove myself to you
I don't have to prove myself to you
You're standing with your arms crossed
Nose turned up like you're saying "impress me"
(Good luck)
Impress me
(Good luck)
I don't have to prove myself to you

The Black Eyed Peas – Play It Loud Lyrics 13 years ago
I pledge my allegiance
To rhythm and sound
Music is my medicine
Let the rhythm pound

And play it loud, baby, play it loud
Play it loud, baby, play it loud
Rock the crowd, baby, rock the crowd
And play it loud, baby, play it loud

I found a love
It's in the music
Drop all your guns
Drop all that bullshit
We come to learn
Inside the instruments
John Lennon, Bob Marley are my presidents

The sound of trumpets wake up people sleeping now
The drummer boy is drumming beats to shake the ground
The violins will pick you up when you are down
The melody will spin around, around, and round.

And who is gonna stop us?
Who's gonna stop us
From rocking with the sound?

Oh, who is gonna stop us
Who's gonna stop us
From br-br-br-breaking it down?

Gonna play it loud, baby, play it loud
Play it loud, baby, play it loud
And rock the crowd, baby, rock the crowd
And rock the crowd, baby, play it loud

Hot beats coming from the city streets
MP3s via internet from overseas
DJ's playing, you dance to 'em
Swaying, staying up
All night, zombie life
Audio delight, oh

The sound of trumpets wake up people laying down, oh
The drummer boy is playing drums to shake the ground, oh
The violins will pick you up when you are down, oh
The melody will spin around, around, and round

And who is gonna stop us?
Who's gonna stop us
From rocking with the sound?

Oh, who is gonna stop us
Who's gonna stop us
From br-br-br-breaking it down?

Gonna play it loud, gonna play it loud
Play it loud, baby, play it loud
And rock the crowd, baby, rock the crowd
Play it loud, baby, play it loud

I pledge my allegiance
To rhythm and sound

Shiny Toy Guns – Le Disko Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure the lead singer of the band (at the time, Carah) is a lesbian. And judging from the music video (which is basically a bunch of scantily clad, really hot women hanging all over each other *drool*) I'd say that assuming this song is about lesbians in some way, shape, or form is not an unreasonable conclusion. Though drugs seemed to me like a valid opinion, 'Le Disko' just sounds like a wicked lesbian club.

Love the band, like the song. I think Sisely gives Carah a run for her money, though.

Eve 6 – Arch Drive Goodbye Lyrics 15 years ago
:D

Eve 6 is back together. It's been like whipped cream and the cherry on top lately, with bands getting back together, first Blink and then Eve 6 (literally one of my all-time favourite bands) and even Cold is back together. I'm psyched for the new albums that are going to be pouring out into the music world.

Also, this song is pretty much one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. And I apologize for the unintelligible comment this time around. EVE 6 IS BACK!

Soul Coughing – Circles Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a great song. My kid brother actually told me about it, and turned me onto this band. The band's style reminds me a lot of Placebo, but a lot more docile and less creepy without as much, *ahem*, "mindfucking" as Placebo. Great band, awesome song overall. I agree with Taobeth and slugsinthefields on the meaning, though I haven't put much thought into it.

Tears for Fears – Raoul And The Kings Of Spain Lyrics 15 years ago
Magnificent song, one of my favourites on the album. I've been looking into the meaning of this one for a while, and I think imagodoc has a lot of insight on this.

The only thing I can add is that a "seventh son of a seventh son" (these lyrics are incorrect, by the way) is a lesser known myth that the seventh son of a seventh son is born with magic powers, a certain "sight" or gift, with the concept varying by location. Maybe the reference to the seventh son of a seventh son is implying that it would take "supernatural powers" to break the chains.

I also read somewhere that Roland's father used to tell them they were related to the presidents of Spain (kings of Spain) and may have elaborated a bit, but I can't seem to find it again and I don't know how credible that site was. I'd be interested in any more information on the meaning of the song, if anyone has it.

I think Kay got it just right. This is, as already stated, an emotionally deep and moving song. I truly like the direction Shiny Toy Guns has moved, though many say they miss Carah Faye. Personally, I feel Sisely fits my taste more. Either way, this song and Ricochet! are the winners off the new album for me.

Death Cab for Cutie – Brothers on a Hotel Bed Lyrics 15 years ago
When I listen to this song, it seems impossible that I could have ever hated Death Cab For Cutie. This song is absolutely beautiful, and with I Will Possess Your Heart, they make up some of the most touching, slightly saddening songs I've ever listened to. Before I heard this song, I wouldn't have considered Death Cab For Cutie as one of my favorite bands, but now that I've started to realize the depth to their lyrics, it seems they're going to get a star next to their name in my iPod.

As for the meaning, I believe it's about a relationship, but the song focuses more on him seeing how much he's changed, and how the relationships he's formed are changing with him. He's grown up and he's changed into "someone he does not recognize", and now the young love he had seems distant because the two lovers have grown in separate directions. They're still close, but the love they felt before is gone, thus the reason they sleep on "separate sides / like brothers on a hotel bed." It's the common story of a young love dying with age put to a breathtakingly beautiful tune.

The piano slays me every time.

Seether – Given Lyrics 15 years ago
Uhh, okay. It'd be nice if everyone tried to learn a thing or two about proper grammar.... >_> At least we aren't flamers....

Anyway, here's my take on the song. It's the author's take on a pretentious relationship. Sort of like being together for the sake of being together.

"Trust all the things I tell you are true / Dress up in your best so I can be proud of you."
--This is him sort of manipulating and using the other person. He thinks of their relationship as for show, and wants to just tote her around like a doll and control her because there's no love.

"And never believe I won't turn on you / And never believe I do this for you."
--This is him saying that he doesn't give a damn about her. He could easily "turn on her" without regret because he's not playing along with this empty relationship for her sake.

"You're leading me on again / And I find it, yeah, I like it / And I'm reeling in awe for sure / Now I know it was given to me, given to me."
--She's doing the same thing he is, playing along with a fake relationship and leading him on, but he likes it because it just proves that their relationship has no value or meaning. He's in awe at exactly how shallow and pretentious she is, sort of laughing at the entire relationship and the idea of her ever meaning anything to him. But now that he sees the truth, he can see that the relationship just sort of fell into his lap; he wasn't the one who started this.

"How I wish I could be rid of this *anyway / Make you regret and make you afraid of me."
--Even though he's playing along, he wishes he could just break it off and not have to deal with her because he holds a little hatred toward her for how shallow and uncaring she is. He's not intent on revenge, but he still wants the gratification of making her feel like shit because he knows it's her fault too; she's just too vain to realize that.

"And never believe I do this for me / And never believe I'll do this gently."
--This is him saying that he's not playing along for his sake; he's not trying to protect himself and pretend it means something. He's not going to be gentle about it, either, because he doesn't care if either of them get hurt. He's self-destructive enough to fuck them both over because he knows they're both vain.

"Can't believe in broken promises / And render conscious all of me / I'll tell you it's all for you / Then deny it."
--He's not going to pussyfoot around it anymore and pretend they still care for each other. He won't try to keep it alive, or try to show her that he was sincere. He's going to blatantly lie to her and contradict himself because he doesn't care what happens anymore. The relationship is dead, and they both know they're faking it, so this is sort of his statement of "I'm going to be the one to end this now, as it should have ended long before we reached this point, but neither of us were willing to admit we were this vain. Well, here it is."

{{My deepest apologies for being so long-winded; it's just how I think/write.}}

Eve 6 – Jet Pack Lyrics 15 years ago
Orignally, I'd skip this song on shuffle because I'd never really listened to it and all I really heard was "jet pack" until I decided I didn't like it. What a mistake.

Eventually, I actually took the time to listen to it and look up the lyrics, and since then it's been one of my favorites. I just think the situation is adorable and maybe a little sad, but I can completely imagine someone being popular with all the ladies but always sort of tagging along behind the guy he has a crush on. I'd like to know what the guy would've thought when / if he heard this song and realized that the "secret" he thought he had to conceal was actually really okay with Max.

Adorable song, incredible band.

Nickelback – Just to Get High Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is so incredibly powerful. I can't even imagine how painful this kind of thing must be. I swear, I almost started crying halfway through. And I can't even say I relate that closely to this song because I don't know many people who do drugs, and certainly no one that's addicted. But Nickelback has progressed so much since their last album. I'm so surprised I haven't heard any buzz about them recently. Dark Horse is blowing me away.

Nickelback – Something In Your Mouth Lyrics 15 years ago
Oh man. This came on during shuffle while I was playing a game. I liked the beat, I liked the risqué lyrics, though I wasn't quite listening to them. It's not that uncommon for songs to say something along the lines of "you shake your ass" or "I love the way you dance", though. Then comes up "'Cause you look much cuter with something in your mouth" and it takes a second before it sinks in, and then I'm like "....wait.....WHAT?" And yeah, that's about that time I cracked up and rated this five stars. This is so over the top and I absolutely love it. Nickelback finally made a comeback - their last album was a bit boring and repetitive of every other rock song out there. Great song, so far a great album!

On the Acid And Flowers mix, which is actually the only version I've heard so far, there's a woman's voice and a lot more lyrics, as well as what people believe to be ethnic singing, and people said the ethnic woman is actually saying something, and by the sounds of it, she's saying "I needed more." Just a note.

I love the mix I have, so I'll have to find the original version and give it a try.

This is, by far, my favorite song on her new album. The moment I heard it, I changed my iPod to repeat one and I've been listening to it exclusively for a little while now.

I agree with Phanta5matic - the song is fairly blunt about it.

I love "But I will not be your bank roll." It kind of reminds me of the attitude she had in "The Next Big Thing".

This song is quickly moving its way up to my top ten most played. =)

Ani DiFranco – Decree Lyrics 15 years ago
Sayna - "20K tone" is an audio test tone that they would broadcast through the television when a channel was off air, supposedly to make sure that the frequency and broadcasting is working properly, though I believe they switched to 1K tones at some point. (I don't know if they even ever used 20K tones.) 20K is actually too high for a lot of people to hear, so maybe she was implying that it was some sort of brainwashing.

I agree that this song is about how brainwashed society has become because of the media and big companies. I also think "Well step back, look up, you'll see I'm dimming the sun
But you won't will you? No, that's a good little one" is talking about how we're all taught to ignore certain things when they're not easily fixed - sort of like pretending the problem doesn't exist, e.g. the Bush Administration denying the fact that global warming exists.

The one part of this song that actually really confuses me is "And cancer the great teacher has been opening schools
Down stream from every factory still, everywhere fools
Are squinting into microscopes researching cells
Trying to figure out a way that we can all live in hell"

It sounds as if she's talking about cancer in a good way, that stem cell research is getting us nowhere, but the entire verse may be sarcastic. I just don't think that describing people who are trying to find a cure for a horrible disease as fools is very fitting to her liberal perspective. Describing a world without cancer as "hell" seems completely over-the-top, which is one of the main reasons I think it might be sarcastic, though she doesn't sound particularly sarcastic.

Though this may just be her stating the first three lines from the perspective of those that believe stem-cell research is a waste of time, and then the fourth line is her jumping in to state her opinion on the situation.

Anyway, this song is amazing, though it's strikingly dark and creepy, especially "Never mind that the nanoseconds in between
Are some of the darkest darkness that you've ever seen". The ominous and almost dream-like feel of this song is probably one of the reasons I love it as much as I do.

Hey, GUESS WHAT everybody? The lyrics are wrong. I don't know if anyone noticed this in all 12 pages of comments, but it's not "safe here in my room". I tried and tried again to hear that, it's just not correct.

"You all assume
I'm suturing my wound"

Which, honestly, makes more sense in the context of the song. I doubt anyone's going to fix this, but I'm just going to mention it for anyone that wants to know the correct lyrics.

If anyone has the album jacket and wants to look inside to see if it has the correct lyrics, feel free.

The National – Apartment Story Lyrics 16 years ago
This is going to be long, annoying, and probably unnecessary, but I'm bad at saying things in a few words. =/

I think this song is about a couple that's trying to deal with the adult world when it's thrown in their faces. I think the first verse is about how they've progressed from high-school ("pin your flowers on" sounds like a prom) and moved on. "I can tie my tie all by myself" is growing up.

Then the second verse is talking about how everything they thought they knew is "diving off the balcony" and it doesn't apply anymore. The adult world is making them tired, and now they're strung out and "ruin too easy". I think the couple sort of combats this by clinging to their young lives, as in:

"Sleep in our clothes and wait for winter to leave"
"Hold ourselves together with out arms around the stereo for hours"
They're just sitting locked up in an apartment listening to pop songs on the radio and ignoring all the responsibility of adult life.

"I'm getting tied, I'm forgetting why" seems just like he realizes that they can't ignore the real world forever, but he doesn't quite realize that.

"But I'll be with you behind the couch when they come on a different day just like this one" Favorite lines in the song. This just reminds me of kids hiding behind the couch when a solicitor or someone comes to the door. They're just hiding from the rest of the world together, not answering the door, pretending no one's home.

"We'll stay inside 'til somebody finds us, do whatever the TV tells us" Acting really childish and just hiding from the adult world, letting the television rule their lives like it used to and just acting really naive, as if everything will go away if they just stay in their own little world.

"Stay inside our rosy-minded fuzz for days" Keep on going thinking they can just live in their own little world, where everything is warm and fuzzy and just peachy, even though outside the apartment, the real world is waiting for them. But they just want to stay inside the fantasy world they created.

"So worry not, all things are well, we'll be alright" is sort of just the narrator reassuring the girl that everything will work out, even when they have to leave their rosy-minded fuzz and deal with the rest of the world.

"We have our looks and perfume on" is saying that even though they have to deal with the real world again, they still have their youth, even if they're 'adults' now. They're still young enough to pretend like they're kids, hiding in their apartment and wishing everything would go away.

At least, that's what I see in it. A lot of The National's songs seem to have darker meanings than I thought they did, but I like to think this one is just hopeful.

The National – Green Gloves Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is about going back and looking in from the outside after you've drifted away from a group of friends. It starts with just a little something that reminds him of them, and then it grows into something more and takes him over, "like a little drop of ink in a glass of water." Then he wants to go through their things and sort of get to know them again, see what his friends have been doing since he'd lost touch. The rest is just sort of his longing to get back in touch with them, "I'll make them mine."

But I liked the ghost idea a lot. It seems to make sense, especially with the "carry them over" part.

Foo Fighters – Come Alive Lyrics 16 years ago
Wow, this song pretty much just blew me away the first time I heard it. I was really confused about what it meant though, and somehow I had convinced myself that it was about God, but I was pleased that that's not the general idea. I like the other ideas about the meaning, and now that I've read the explanations, it makes sense that this song would be about Violet. I think it's kind of a mix though, between talking about his child when she 'came alive' and about Grohl and how he was helped to 'come alive'. Really great song.

Puddle of Mudd – Control Lyrics 16 years ago
This song has next to no poetic value and yet it has a play count of over 500 on my iPod. It's a good song to listen to when you're not in the mood to think and you just want sex. I love how blunt it is, no twisted meanings, no real 'moral of the story'. Just a song that makes you want to scream and grab your partner around the neck and *ahem*. Poetically, I'd give it a 1.5, maybe. But for energy, I'd give it a 9.5.

Also - Ha! These flame wars are amusing, and slightly annoying. If I ever found the time, I'd make a real music site where real people could post what they thought the song meant, and comments would be regulated to filter out the idiots.

She Wants Revenge – It's Just Begun Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a really good song, and I think I just fell in love with SWR again. The line: 'Whisper to me softly, "I'm yours"' sort of reminds me of "Killing Me Softly" and I don't know why because I hate that song and love this one.

It's a song about how someone always ends up falling in love, no matter how hard they try not to.

I love 'In a dark room / With our secrets / Thinking no one sees'. It's like they're keeping the details of their relationship secret at first, because they never really meant to fall in love but now they are, and they don't really want to admit it yet. They're in denial. No one wants to be in love. No one smart. And then you end up falling in love and you don't understand why you didn't want to be in love. Something like that.

' 'Cause all these friends of mine would like to think that they've found the one' is a line I can really relate to. I see things for what they are, and honestly, everyone says their current significant other is 'the one' until they break up. When I'm dating people, I never say someone is the one unless I truly think they are. Which hasn't happened.

'With nobody left to right / And no one to hold you tight / Someone's going home alone again tonight'. Moral of the story: When you don't find love, or love leaves you, life kind of sucks.

Great song. No one ever comments on these Indie songs.
