This is what Ursula Rucker says about this song in the CD sleeve: "It is my belief that from the moment of conception, a human's life can be pre-determined. By pre-determined, I mean to say that a fetus, while still in the womb, can be greatly affected by both physiologically and emotionally by his/her's mother's emotional experience. If abuse and declension have been the rule during the mother's pregnancy, then abuse and declension could very well rule the baby's life once born. In 'Return To Innocence Lost' this happens to 'First Son'. Some can fight pre-determination. 'First Son' succombs to demons, personal and peripheral, thus giving us the fight quite early in life. 'Return To Innocence Lost' is also the story of a man who hides his innocence out of fear. A fear to face his own life. So he dons a cloak of bravado and a bad boy image pretending to be evil himself, when really, he was never evil at all... just innocent. H was constantly quelling his innocence in an effort to forget his fear until 'First Son's' innocence is finally rediscovered through death. 'Return To innocence Lost' is about Ricardo Angelo Rucker. My beautiful innocently lost brother. born May 15, 1955- returned to innocence lost December 24, 1985." WOW. |

the Peel Session 1 version that closes out the first cd on the re-release starts "i was dressed for suc.... cess/but success it never comes/and i'm the only one who laughs/at the jokes when they are so bad/and the jokes are always bad/but they're not as bad as this" same lyrics, but the space in "success" kind of makes it sound like the stanza is an intentionally bad pun on giving head (success it never comes (cums). he then admits to that joke being bad. probably nothing to do with the intention, but i think sm is clever enough to realize that, even if it wasn't what he was doing. |

| The Antlers – Sylvia Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I, too, love the use of Sylvia Plath as an allusion. I take it as he can only tell her how much he loves her while she's asleep. Maybe because of the whole hating his tone idea from Kettering combined with her abusive behavior he doesn't tell her this while she's awake? Maybe? Great song. | |

| I think the "you made me sleep and uneven" is just saying that she made him to sleep, but because of his love for her he wasn't able to sleep well knowing what he did about her condition. That's my take. | |

first i understand what most of you are saying about the song being very anti-religion/belief, but it is hypocritical to call bumpygrimes ignorant while many of you are making totally unfair remarks about christians and chritianity itself. now to analyze from my opinion - to me the line " Marionettes on weakening cables Huddled up with fear and hate because they know their fate and it's a lot to put them through" takes christianity out of the picture. i have never met a christain who knows their fate and is scared. in the christain faith knowing your fate would be very reasureing seeing as they know they will be saved. as a christain i do have doubts sometimes and, to me, the doubts are the lingering voices. also religion, christainity at least (that's all i can really speak for), is not all nice and neat. that is one reason i believe. believing is not easy as many would seem to be suggesting. also "hustling the changes to the book that's the strangest" doesn't have anything to do with christianity. christianity hasn't really changed since luther and calvin. (sorry mormon... i don't buy it. maybe that's what it's about...). lastly, isn't it a little ironic that we are pondering a song in which the line "Most ideas turn to dust As there are few in which we can all trust Haven't you noticed I've been shedding all of mine?" |
