Macklemore – Same Love Lyrics 12 years ago
When I first heard this song, I wanted to cry. It made me feel so bad for those same-sex partners out there who don't have equal rights.

Macklemore really struck a nerve. Growing up in church, I remember listening to sermons on why being gay is wrong. My church started a petition against Disney because they granted insurance benefits to same-sex partners. I even felt a little guilty watching "The Lion King" movie.

I still don't understand why the gay issue is such a sore spot with the Christian church. If the church were to rank sins, being gay is pretty high up there. Christians are willing to look past lying, gambling, cheating, & drunkenness (which are all mentioned in the Bible too). It's the one sin Christians are unwilling to forgive. Which is ironic -- given that it's not up to us to judge other people.

Today, on Facebook, my gay and lesbian friends (and their allies) are celebrating the defeat of DOMA and Prop 8 by the Supreme Court. My Christian friends are noticeably quiet.

We are watching history being made, and in another generation, they will wonder why the right to marry (regardless of race, gender, etc) wasn't available to everyone.

Howie Day – Collide Lyrics 12 years ago
A Song for Juliet — “A Quiet Melancholy”

The song “Collide” by Howie Day captures Juliet’s quiet melancholy about her relationship with Romeo. In Act 3, Scene 3, Juliet and Romeo spend their last night together after Romeo has killed Tybalt. The song captures the moment when Juliet first wakes up and realizes the gravity of the situation. Day sings,

“The dawn is breaking,
A light shining through”

which is the setting for when Juliet commands Romeo,

“O now be gone, more light and light it grows.” (p. 174)

While Day talks about “the doubt filling [his] mind”, Juliet, too, worries that she will never see Romeo again. She even says,

“O God, I have an ill-divining soul!
Methinks I see thee, now thou art so low,
As one dead in the bottom of a tomb.” (p. 176)

Sadly, her premonition that Romeo will die comes true. It is as if “the stars refuse to shine” on this “pair of star-crossed lovers.”

The Script – For The First Time Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about a young couple struggling to make ends meet. Even though the lyrics doesn't mention it, I imagine that they do have children because I sense a desperation in his voice. They are coping with their financial troubles in different ways (she stays in bed; he goes and drinks). At night, they stay up drinking and talking sh*t. They are getting to know each other again "for the first time."

But, I always felt like in the end, the couple doesn't stay together. I think they both realize that a break-up is inevitable, and that's why there's such a bittersweetness to their situation.

It seems like he is not meeting her needs in this relationship. "She needs him, but [he] can't seem to find the time." He begs, "Don't give up on me, baby," but his actions don't give her reasons why she shouldn't. I think the end is near for this couple in this sweet, sad, touching song.

The Band Perry – If I Die Young Lyrics 14 years ago
I first heard this when Lauren Alaina sang this in the Top 3 of American Idol Season 10. My first thought was that it is talking about an abortion. That's why the short life is severed by a knife. It's mostly sung by the baby, but a part about it sounds like it's from the mother. When she talks about the boy that said he'd love her forever, it sounded like the father of the baby. He held her hand through the abortion, but the abortion is what broke them up. Kind of makes sense, yes? Overall, very poignant song.

Sarah McLachlan – The Path of Thorns (Terms) Lyrics 17 years ago
This song captures one person's devotion to a non-committal person. The singer had wanted to share a life with the person she's singing to, but he has recently broke up with her. She already suspected the break-up because she observes, "In your voice there was something wrong." She talks about how they planned their dreams show through in "terms of endearment" (affectionate nicknames) and the time they've spent together. Foolishly, she stayed with him, hoping he would change. But he is unable to make a commitment and now, there is no use staying together any longer.

Jennifer Knapp – Martyrs and Thieves Lyrics 17 years ago
"and I know they are wrong when they say I am strong as the darkness covers me." - On the outside, it appears that I have everything together. But I've suffered from depression (depression) for most of my adult life. So every time someone tells me they don't know how I can handle everything, I think of this lyric. I feel weakened by depression/darkness.

Bon Jovi – (You Want To) Make A Memory Lyrics 17 years ago
The part about "your phone is ringing I don't want to ask" makes it seem like the other person has new commitments. The singer doesn't want to know who she is with now... but he clearly wants to be with her. Such a perfect example of sexual tension.

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 18 years ago
I initially thought it was about suicide, but the lyrics sound more like a friend trying to help someone with an addiction. The song is written after the fact -- his friend has died from drunk driving and he wishes he "would have stayed up with [him] all night."

Jon Mclaughlin – So Close Lyrics 18 years ago
If it is not interpreted as a romantic song, perhaps it could be about a birthmother and her newborn baby. The lyrics "You’re in my arms / And all the world is calm / The music playing on for only two" remind me of the moment after birth when you're finally wheeled to the recovery room. She "bid her romantic dreams goodbye" when the birthfather left. She's emotional about looking at this baby who she had been carrying inside her for the last nine months. "How could I face the faceless days / If I should lose you now?" She having second thoughts about giving the baby up for adoption. But in the end, I think she knows it's what is best for the baby. That is why they are "still so far."

Jewel – Good Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I think she is saying that tomorrow will be a better day. But I question whether she really believes it. I like that even though she's saying "it's gonna be a good day," the tone of her voice hints that she's not completely convinced.
