The Who – I Can See For Miles Lyrics 17 years ago
Another who song that seems to describe Townshend's failed issues with women. Had a relationship with a cheater, sounds like.

The drum work is easily top 10 all time for a single. It underachieved as a single, which is too bad. The US wasn't ready for a song like this, I guess. It is timeless, sounds good decades later.

The Who – Substitute Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is intented to be humorous, which I think it is. The guy knows he doesn't match up with a chick, or at least her expectations. He's not all busted up by it but instead finds some humor. She's straight but he ain't.

The Who – Squeeze Box Lyrics 18 years ago
The Who had to disguise their lyrics many times, as they suffered censorship from the songs which were too "obvious." Songs like "Pictures of Lily" and "Magic Bus" were assailed as being about sex and drugs, respectively.

Now, Squeeze Box. A squeeze box is an accordion. The disguise is it is a vagina, not too hard to decipher. She wears it on her chest is the distraction to make you think it's an accordion. Thus, the lyrics are divided so as to confuse censors and provide some humor. Bet Townshend got a kick out of it. The "in and out . . ." part is clearly the most sexual part of the song.

Neil Diamond – Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show Lyrics 18 years ago
Diamond's Jewish, his grandparents coming to the USA from Russia and from Poland. One wonders if he is a bit cynical about Christian revivalism, as is portrayed in this song.

Don't get me wrong, I like the song. I was a little ticked when it wasn't the recorded version on his 2001 double CD release, "The Essential Neil Diamond."

I like his earlier stuff. Once you get to "Love on the Rocks" it's all downhill for me.

Visage – In The Year 2525 Lyrics 18 years ago
If I remember, this song came out in the late 60s, done by Sager & Evans. It was a catchy, slightly scary song if you thought about the lyrics.

One funny lyric is: Man has cried a billion tears.

Sounds like a lot, huh. With a current world population nearing 7 billion, that's one tear for every 7 people, not counting those yet to be born. Guess they couldn't work in "Man has cried 900 octillion tears" (900,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000).

Manfred Mann – Blinded by the Light Lyrics 18 years ago
Word has it Springsteen was pretty cranked when he wrote this one. It's by-and-large a song written under the influence of who knows what. Not Tab or Fresca.

Then, Manfred Mann had to go and substitute the word "deuce" with "douche." It does sound like "wrapped up like a douche," not at all does it sound like revved up like a deuce. They did it probably to create more record sales. It got past the censors, anyway.

There are sexual references too. Silicon sister (prostitute?) with a manager mister (pimp?). The curly/burly/wurly/early thing sounds like just making some rhymes when you're stoned or something.

The song sounded too packaged or refined or something to me, when I used to hear it.

Aerosmith – Monkey On My Back Lyrics 18 years ago
the lyric "feeding that fuckin' monkey on my back" is probably instead "feeding that funky monkey on my back" in spite of about everyone on the net citing "fuckin'". Listen to it, I have about 1000 times. The word rhymes with monkey. A funky monkey would mean he is confused by it, fuckin' is he's mad. Either way, it ain't good.

This song comes on a fine album, "Pump." Part of the Aerosmith comeback starting in the later 80s, with "Permanent Vacation," and then "Get a Grip" after Pump came out. Aerosmith's best stuff, IMO.

The Moody Blues – The Voice Lyrics 18 years ago
He is asking his gal for a peptalk of sorts, though it goes much deeper. Inspiration to move forward. The lyrics are her words to him, after his first enquiry to her to "take me back to school."

Perhaps at a time of doubt in his life, he looked to his girlfriend or wife for encouragement and inspiration. Her words to him are truly eloquent.

America – A Horse With No Name Lyrics 18 years ago
The song has a great melody with sh**ty lyrics. The lyrics are made to fit the tune. Any further looks into the whys and wherefores are risky at best. Like looking at a Rorschach inkblot, really.

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about the death of religion, if not God. Satan wins, and the father son and holy ghost hit the road. It is an anti-religious piece starting off quite passively.

McLean didn't put such thought into it as to apply the symbolism suggested in some of the posts. He probably was made to go to church too much as a kid. Nice vent against God and religion, though. He can later ascribe whatever meaning he wants to the characters, as if it is a more deep song, which it is not.

He looked for something spiritual at one point in his life and didn't find it. Then he blames religion and God. Looking in the mirror would have been better.

D-A-D – A Horse With No Name Lyrics 18 years ago
I wouldn't overinterpret this song. I think it has a good melody, with silly lyrics. The lyrics are made to match the melody, sometimes in absurd fashion: "ain't no one FOR to give you no pain" as an example.

The "for" is put in to make the song sound smoother. Grammatically, it is awful, as are the lyrics in general. I remember this song as a kid and liked the melody but when I heard the words I was very turned off. My friends and I thought it was stupid, to be honest.

The group America has other songs with dumb lyrics. For example, Ventura Highway. They seem to try make the lyrics fit into the melody with little effort to make much sense.

Other groups are guilty of this as well, making lyrics fit the melody without making sense. I just heard "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran. Talk about some dumb lyrics in that song. No one notices usually, as the song flows along and you really have to listen hard to catch how dumb some of the words are.
