Dave Grohl said about the song: "The chorus says 'This is a call to all my past resignation'. It's just sort of like a little wave to all the people I ever played music with, people I've been friends with, all my relationships, my family. It's a hello, and in a way a thank you." More likely than not it's just a list of inside jokes. |

Maybe I'm looking into this too much, but reading this song's lyrics, I can't help but thinking it's about the book series "His Dark Materials". Written in the perspective of someone in the church or even Metatron or the Authority. The song says how they've "pissed on too many sprites" and how they're now standing up for the rights, much like Asriel and the rest of the world in the book. The references to a balloon dragging a corpse - Lee Scoresby. The orphan born on the desert floor with the drilling eyes - Lyra, obviously. The red rabbits referenced could mean daemons, maybe the ones Lyra freed from Svalbard, or just the way that daemons die. In particular: "I still owe you for the hole in the floor, And the ghost in the hall," This really made me think of the series. The hole in the floor could mean the gigantic abyss created when the Church tried to destroy Lyra. The ghost in the hall could mean the Spectres, or even more literally, the ghosts that the Church locked up in the world of the dead. It's a stretch - I know, and it probably has absolutely no relevence, but I thought I'd bring it up. |
