There seem to be several levels to this song, but I think although this can be applied to a specific woman, or relationship between women (ie: mother-daughter, etc), I get a strong sense that it's deeper than that - more akin to the pagan notions of Mother Earth, Mother Nature, the feminine in the divine, etc. References to "the moon"; being a lover from womb to tomb, entering a room with "things you don't show"; the maid, mother and crone (stages of female human life?) - it all points to a deeper and more existential "female-ness" and feminity being referred to. |

| There's also a caution to us in how we are to others too, I think - lines like "Brother you've only got two hands to lend". Also "there's things on your mind you should keep" and "tougher to look than to leap" suggest to me that sometimes being a real friend to someone takes more than just the easy options. Sometimes we have to do the "tougher" thing and hold back from saying what we might want to, or think carefully before we act in a friendship or relationship (or "leap"). | |

I think this is a very profound song. We all suffer disappointment sometime in life when we find we're let down by someone we thought we could trust. To me, this song is a caution, but at the same it's quite optimistic - recognises that sometimes we'll all feel low, sometimes we all need other people and human companionship, and that's good - just be careful that the friends and people we draw close to us are genuine. |
