i think the song is about a person typically thought of as a "free spirit." it's about someone who is only satisfied "with the chase" and becomes bored with relationships easily. even though they may care, they ruin relationships intentionally in order to be free again. i feel like this song was written about me.. only i cared enough to try and change. i'm still unhappy sometimes, but i love this boy so much. |

ooooohkay! while and after leaving that last comment, i went and looked up some stuff about the kennedies. did anybody remember that Robert Kennedy, JFK's brother, ran for president against Lyndon Johson? When Jackie Kennedy said she believed the same thing would happen to Robert as did to JFK. All throughout his campaign, there were rumors of contracts to kill Robert. And then he was assasinated. I don't know. Maybe the song is about how all the men in her life died tragically, starting with JFK? when it kicks into the "there goes today.." it's so epic and beautiful and i love it. but i think this is kind of about the cycle of life and relationships. people coming and going, that's the numbers. or possibly the drugs theory is correct. like, you take drugs to make you feel better, but it's like they say.. you always keep chasing that first high. so more drugs come into the picture. "let's show them the only way, let's show them our hearts" could kind of be like, we're not bad, it's just how we function. i'm not sure about the distorted light line. it makes me think about waking up at dawn and your room somehow became freezing overnight. and the "there goes today..." part is basically just the passing of time, but about how every day is essentially the same when you break it down. |

| i think it's about two people who were in love at one time, but the girl has fallen out of love. she's not malicious or mean, she just hasn't admitted it. he's begging her to admit it so he can let go. he just needs her to say it. they've almost reached this point a few times, but they've talked themselves into believing the love is still there. but the longer they keep it going, the worse it will be in the end. the song is one side of the conversation. the line, "your arms to your side again." gives me this extremely strong mental image of a distressed person throwing their arms down in frustration. but also a person leaving without a physical 'goodbye' no hugs or kisses because it's over. yeah. that's what i think. | |

| it's possible that the "your god knows his faithful" lyric isn't actually about god, but more any following. notice that the lyric is "YOUR god." YOUR thing. it could be anything that creates a stereotype, any type of thing that creates a following of typicalness, of predictable people. this is just an example, but exchange with meaning of god with the meaning of something like drugs. your god knows his faithful. your drug, or the concept of it, the "leader" knows you will continue to do it. does this make sense to anybody? this isn't coming out how i'm thinking it for some reason. but it makes sense to me. | |

well, i don't know if i'd say it's exactly a break up song specifically. to me, it's kind of about being in a relationship that's more important to one person than the other. specifically, to the girl. she's taking comfort in the fact that she has somebody, but having a hard time dealing with the fact that she's not really important. she's realizing it's going nowhere, but she wants to hold on to it. "your secret kiss of confidence was my escape, the perfect game to play." she doesn't understand why she's not important and why the time spent together isn't important. "i don't get you. i can't forget what you've forgotten all along. i've never been so alone." and "i needed you to notice, that's all i wanted." it's possible she feels she was taken advantage of in the given' it up kind of way. and it's like the guy is more interested in the sex, in girls who will give it up. stupid girls, pornstar type girls. empty but pretty girls. "your fasination with naked walls of silk and skin with no condtions." the chorus, the counting down and such, is the mix of emotions, the confusion about what to do about the situation, to either end it "break away," just continue to live the lie "all over you," where as the "dressed up and ready to play" line is like putting on a metaphorically mask, she's diguising herself asbeing satisified, happy, like she's playing the game too. the "having fun" line kind of goes along with that. the counting down is like counting down the point of decision, but the song goes on and she keeps starting over, she just ends up back at the beginning. "don't cry out. cease fire." i think is the guy's response, as if he's saying don't make a big deal of this, possibly quite literally don't yell at me, and metaphorically don't take shots at me, this doesn't mean anything. so that's my interpretation. don't neccesarily take my word for it, i'm applying the song to a situation i was in myself at one time. but i think it makes a lot of sense. =) |
