| its about 2 lovers who have something good together despite the alien nature of the city they are in. the song has a suicide pact element 'And we could feel a little closer as we tumble through the sky' and also 'Will I see you up in paradise or have you come to catch me?' suggesting that they commit suicide together and go to paradise away from the landscape they are in and hence when they hit the ground 'two hearts under a skyscraper' after they have jumped and gone to heaven together. | |
| Manic Street Preachers – Roses In The Hospital Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the title i heard came from when sylvia plath was in hospital and people bought her flowers but she wasnt interested in the symathy because these people hadnt cared before and i think richey is just relating his position to hers, hence the 'we dont want your fucking love' | |

i cant believe peoples comments on the first page find this song depressing. the chorus is one of the most uplifting pieces of music the manics have ever done, especially with the string arrangement and james's voice. the song is about working class perception and how everyone thinks 'we dont talk about love, we only wanna get drunk' whereas in reality the working class can be intelligent and useful, a lot of writers musicians actors sports people etc come from a working class background. 'libraries gave us power' highlights how no matter your background you can always improve and learn and 'i waish i had a bottle...etc' just means that you can improve as a person without being ashamed of where you come from although the upper classes do not recognise this hence the 'what price now for a shallow piece of dignity'. unfortunately if you look at most town centres in the country at a weekend the 'we only wanna get drunk' line kind of stops being ironic as it is meant in the song. |

this song is richey just stating his position and basically telling everyone that in a corrupt world he is the person who lives his life with truth and purity whilst everyone else is corrupted by the society they live in, but ultimately it wil be him who pays the price for doing this hence the 'ive been too honest with myself i should have lied like everybody else', because everyone else is scared of the truth. for having these beliefs the rest of society sees him as 'idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn' basically people who are despised in society, but again he states that he is the one in the right 'life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards' showing how other people conform to the accepted way of doing things to fit in even though it is corrupt. the lines: 'i am stronger than mensa, miller and mailer i spat out plath and pinter i am all the things that you regret, a truth that washes that learnt how to spell' are probably my favourite lyrics ever and also run with the fuck everybody theme of the song by saying how he is purer than all of these clever writers and people are scared to admit to the true state of their lives. the opening lines compliment this with the 'i am an architect they call me a butcher etc' and show how people at the time in the press and in other bands etc cast him adrift and mocked his self harm and he is basically saying that they are just scared to admit to the reality of their lives in a kind of state of denial and that they would do these sort of things to themselves if they were not cowards. |

i think it reflects the way in which he feels torn between staying with this girl and the temptations of being in a band and touring. the 'curiosity becomes a heavy load' seems to suggest this. the 'we'll force you to be cold' suggests that curiosity will make him do bad things and he wants her to hate him for it as a result because he knows he's wrong but its for the best if they break up. i agree with mardybum the rest of the song is a kind of stream of consciousness of him re-telling the story and he feels regretful although he knows its for the best 'to tear apart the ties that bind perhaps fuck off might be too kind perhaps fuck off might be too kind' indicates the previous point. These lyrics set against the epic ending of this song is in my opinion the best 30 seconds of music they have done, eloquently put and the music just sounds great. their first album was pretty good but this song is simply awesome. |
