My interpretation of the song is that the singer (not David) was very successeful yet lost all of his money and ran off a cliff into the ocean. I got that idea mostly from the lines, "And you may ask yourself Where does that highway go ? And you may ask yourself Am I right ?...Am I wrong ? And you may tell yourself MY GOD !...WHAT HAVE I DONE ?" and "Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down Letting the days go by/water flowing underground Into the blue again/after the money´s gone Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground." Look at the videos too. It's true, his actions look like marionettes, but if you look closely ,especially the live videos, it looks like a person struggling. It took me a while to realize this. |
