Passenger – The Last Unicorn Lyrics 7 years ago
My interpretation of the song is that it's a last desperate attempt to fulfill an unrequited love, by sleeping with a different friend or prostitute. He starts to realize mid-song that it's not going to work and, In the end, he finds that nothing can fill the void left by the unrequited love.

Glen Phillips – Chapel Perilous Lyrics 8 years ago
Glen has written about his battles with depression; this sounds like a ultimatum - get help or get out. He's searching for the thing that will finally make him happy "All the blessings of the world could not heal the sadness in me, as poppies (a flower that produces opium, making you very happy) in the light unfurl, so might I if the truth shined near me".

Chapel Perilous itself may be just an ultimatum, or a place, such as a hospital, where one gets help - or can get worse. It seems to imply this - with him thinking he is the only one who can cure him.

In the end, he seems to find some balance, if not happiness - just trusting in the future and taking things one day at a time.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Windmills Lyrics 8 years ago
An unrequited love song to me.. Referencing Don Quixote (tilting at windmills). As the song progresses, he releases the burden of the unrequited love, perhaps by telling the person. It doesn't turn out well for him, so it sticks with him - and he develops an idealized version of her - and now is seeking shelter from those feelings - too much time - a mental illness.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Don't Fade Lyrics 8 years ago
A relationship thing? Perhaps not romantic, but close - close enough that they know the persons inner struggle, perhaps a difficult burden, and this song is the progress of them drifting - fading - away.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Desire Lyrics 8 years ago
This song rings to me some of the Buddhist leanings Glenn has expressed in interviews; one of the precepts is one of the sources of suffering is desire. So to me, it's very simple. Desire is a disease, something to be eliminated; we should appreciate what we have, stop accumulating junk, and be content.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Stories I Tell Lyrics 8 years ago
Glenn mentioned in some interviews about how his songs were "notes to himself", during struggles with depression; it's possible that in private he's not that extroverted - he doesn't want the attention, he considers "fame a a cancer, and ego it's seed". He's tried to avoid the ego part - he just wants his music to mean something to us. Songs beyond "walk on the ocean" for instance are deeply introspective, personal, spiritual.. some are just silly, but wonderful still.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Dam Would Break Lyrics 8 years ago
I do see some religious interpretation - but Glenn has stated he's more partial to eastern religions, as I am - but for me, it's about an unrequited love that's been held onto for a long time, tucked away until you have to turn away from the person entirely ("what is this ice that gathers round my heart, to stop the flood of warmth before it even starts").

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Have You Ever Seen the Rain? Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this song epitomizes the monotony of depression and just living a hard life, in general. Its also a slap in the face to those people who either have everything go OK all the time and wonder why you're so depressed, or those same people who fall on a small bit of hard time - "I want to know, have you ever seen the rain - coming down on a sunny day?" and "Been that way for all my time..". Also, that uncanny ability some of us have to predict crappy things and prepare. It just means a lot. it's the perfect song.
