| Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| As long as he looks back at his life he will be sad. This because a blue bird sings sad songs and the blue bird will be there as long as the statue stands. | |
| Elliott Smith – Color Bars Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think this song doesn't mean anything. Its just meant to paint beautiful pictures in your head. | |

| Elliott Smith – Somebody That I Used to Know Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This song makes me so sad. Its about a narrator who stayed with someone who needed help. But once that person got better he/she left the narrator. The line i like the best is: "Now that you're big enough to run your own show You're just somebody that I used to know" Its so good because its him saying that this person has moved on to bigger and better things. And now he is just a person that this bigger person used to know. But its so sad that people work that way you know. To see someone just like pass on and not care about you anymore because they don't have a purpose for you anymore. it makes you think like what the fuck was i to that person. just some helper not a real person. They don't care about you they just want to get something from you. Its depressing to think of that situation. |

| Elliott Smith – Son of Sam Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Son of Sam is metaphor for being a fucked up product of abuse. You know he can't form relationships or hold relationships because of this. Hence couple killer each and everytime. The ending shows that he is scared of himself. | |
| Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This makes me think of memorial statues for war veterans. You know how some statues can be placed in natural poses and near fountains. But what it means is that he is washed up. His time is gone and the stone statue is like his way of standing still in time that was good for him. He wishes for things to be good by wishing in a well but a song bird, his sadness and despair, is everywhere he goes (hence on his shoulder). Everything means nothing to me seems like a line that could mean a lot of things. To me it means that all the world around him doesn't mean anything to him because he is so focused on one aspect of his life that has already passed. Which kind of goes with soldiers. They get built up and trained for one purpose which is to fight for the things that they love. but after the fight they are just veterans without much respect and have a fucked up life for fighting. It can relate to lovers who fight for what they love but loose everything. They can't see the beauty in anything else because they are so devastated by some fight. Now he looks back at what he had in the past. | |
| Elliott Smith – I Better Be Quiet Now Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"A lot of hours to occupy, it was easy When I didn't know you yet Things I'd have to forget" when you leave someone its so hard to move on with your day. One way to get your mind off of things and forget things is to occupy yourself with work, creativity, good times etc. But sometimes each hour becomes a struggle to get your mind of the loved one you miss. And he can't carry on with his day. But the earlier verses makes me think that it isn't someone he loves but just someone he met and he is so lonely that he has this longing for that person. He's also saying that like before he met this person he had easier things to forget.Which could be caused by longing for someone so hard because he is soo lonely and its hard to forget about someone you long for. Its just a reallly really lonely song. :) its beautiful. Its like the lonely Smiths songs by being honest and desperate. soooooo gooooood!!! |

| Elliott Smith – Happiness/The Gondola Man Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"Activity's killing the actor And a cop's standing out in the road turning traffic away" awesome lines... makes me think of an actor in a scene in the middle of a city while everyone is crowding around to try to see him. But all of that is killing the actor, the things he is faking to be and the crowd around him. The cop standing in the road turning people away could be friends, music, or a reputation. His body been buried away is a metaphor for his actual self being lost or purposely suppressed beyond being able to show. He's a liar to people since he isn't himself. But he wishes happiness onto the people he lies to particularly one person who lies to him back. I like Elliott Smith's lyrics because they can be so ambiguous but he connects everything smoothly and he does it in a really really intimate truthful sense. almost as if he is just spilling his mind out onto the paper. You could think about what he is saying forever because its truthful.... you can't fake something like this i dont think? |

| Elliott Smith – Stickman Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| wow. what if it means like someone finds a place to hide their hurt. But really its so bad that he doesn't want to show it because people's care bothers him and makes it worse. its like the tipping point. he's a stickman because he doesn't show anything and seems dead. he seems like he's dead because its like him faking his death in his social projection. its awesome though because it works so well as a hiding device. people confused his fake/omenious death for him being less bad so means that he is doing well and therefore better. as a getting better side. but its a way of hiding his hurt. which ends up hurting him more because he gets lonely and gets everyone's eyes off of him. then he really dies. he's life's end is even art. | |
| Elliott Smith – No Name #4 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think it might about him and his mom leaving the house because she finally makes the decision to bounce. and then they come back instead before the stepfather comes home. and they are both terrified and keeping their guards' on. She even tells him to not tell his stepfather about what they had just done. A failed attempt to leave. | |
| Elliott Smith – Sons Into Daughters Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| "Drug in the water" is how a riot can be spread like wildfire or like drugs mixed in a municipality water supply. Anyone who takes a sip will be crazed. The government/authority controls that part of our lives. Its a reflection of why people riot, they get pissed at the way the authority treats/controls them especially when its an everyday personal aspect of your life like drinking tab water. | |
| Elliott Smith – Abused Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"other people see some evil intention but the closer you get, the more you get confused how, why does everyone know been abused now, didn't want it to show" He begins to explain that people think he has evil intentions in the things he does, like coming off as abused and calling out the church for being abusive. Then he starts to say that if you get to know him you'll be confused, meaning that you will have a change of heart and question your previous assumption that he has evil intentions for doing the things he does. However whats beautiful about this stanza is that he cuts off his explanation and says "why does everyone know" which hits me as if he is saying why do I have to explain myself to people. |

| Elliott Smith – New Disaster Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
And also the lines "Well, I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster You looked all over town Got turned around To walk back through the mud The kind you had left behind you" If he is talking to himself the looking all over town could be him doing errands for this person that he wishes to be with or he could be searching for her and not finding what he wants. |

Correction sorry: "Well, I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster You looked all over town Got turned around To walk back through the mud The kind you had left behind you" He could be talking to the girl in this one. He's wondering where she is and how she looked all over town to find someone but in the end she comes back to the mud she left. The mud is beautiful because he is the mud to her. Mud is sticky and not somewhere you want to be. Its a shitty ugly place. So Elliott is the mud to her and he knows she is stuck with him when she fails to find someone else. However those lines could be him talking to himself as well. Like asking himself what is he doing with her if she is going all over town looking for other people and she could be the mud to him. She could be the mud because he is stuck with her too and he has the worse off end of being stuck with her. Which is why this chorus is really amazing because it goes with the general idea that i said before about how everyone is looking for someone but rarely finds it. Its doubting love. |

| Elliott Smith – New Disaster Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think this song is doubting love: "Everybody is the same in this long no-win game Where every new blood Gets time to become resigned" Meaning everyone learns that love is one of those things that can't be achieved by everyone and so you resign your efforts, hopes, dreams, trials for it. Whats beautiful about this song is that he goes into an example of his own life. So its also about his connection to someone that he wishes to be with. But that person who has a smile is searching for someone for herself and wonders who she going after now. "The ghost of your smile is always looking For new bodies to haunt And its been here and disappeared It's hanging around aloofly for a while Gradually gone It's pleasing and freezing" Meaning that the person has left him looking for other people to leave. Its pleasing to have someone like you but then its freezing and not warm anymore when that person is gone. Which is why i like the metaphor of the ghost of her smile because ghosts are cold, not real, and ghosts can also be someone you want to be back and want to be real. "Well, I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster You looked all over town Got turned around To walk back through the mud The kind you had left behind you" However those lines could be talking about himself as well. Like asking himself what is he doing with her if she is going all over town looking for other people. Which is why this chorus is really amazing because it goes with the general idea that i said before about how everyone is looking for someone but rarely finds it. Its doubting love. Then the next lines about the mud are beautiful because if the chorus is about her then that means he is the mud. Mud is sticky and not somewhere you want to be. Its a shitty ugly place. So Elliott is the mud to her. "Now I wonder what it is you're after Keeping company with this disaster Why you never tried to tame your master" This is really nice because this stanza has dual meanings to me. He could be saying this to the girl about how he wonders where she is and how she could be doing this to people etc. and why she never tries to tame her master. Now master is the key word because master to her means her longing for someone and master for him means his longing for someone/her. So this is an example of his long-no win game because he can't have her. :) |

| Elliott Smith – Satellite Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"And for all you know You're the only one who finds it strange When they call it a lover's moon The satellite Because it acts just like lovers do The satellite" "a lover's moon" represents a lover because the moon and earth are gravitated towards each other and the moon revolves around the earth. Its perfect because at night the moon is the strongest light that people look to at night, just like when a person is having a bad time they look for solace in their lover. However the satellite also revolves around the earth but no one on earth appreciates it because it is so undetectable. However the satellite only collects information off of the earth and it doesn't effect the earth's oceans like a moon does. So the fact that he and maybe others find it strange when they call a satellite a lover's moon means that he doesn't believe in love. |

| Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) Lyrics | 18 years ago |

its about how first love can give people future ideas with their first love... and that they want to be detached from everything around them and just be by themselves. however he lost this love and wants the same mentality back but can do it unless he forgets the hurt that came from not having his first love. hence the lines "You change all the lead sleeping in my head to gold As the day grows dim, I hear you sing a golden hymn It's the song I've been trying to sing... Purify the colors, purify my mind Purify the colors, purify my mind And spread the ashes of the colors over this heart of mine" meaning that he wants to start over again and have that first love feeling again. symbolism in spreading ashes of the memories on his heart so his heart will use those ashes to grow again? |

| Arcade Fire – (Antichrist Television Blues) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| television stars are seen as antichrist because they have people worshiping them and not god, which is one of the most unholy sins. However its ironic that a preacher is pushing his two daughters to be stars. the preacher also tries to justify his actions and also thinks that it actually might be god's plan to have his daughters be so known to everyone via selling themselves.Hence "to seat my daughters there by your right hand" meaning that his daughters will be such recognized stars that they can be considered almost as high as god. The song title might be sarcastic meanign that its such a sad thing for preachers to say that television is an antichrist and that its so sad, but there are preachers like joe simpson that push his daughters to be stars on television. | |
