this song is liek the story of my life right now. What I get out of it at least is that he is in love with a girl that is with someone else. he knows he is better for her and would treat her right and much better than the guy she is with. the guy she is with is rich and comes from a background of money and greatness. the other guy is simple and cant buy her everything the boyfriend can, but he loves her more and is a better man. i am in the same situation pretty much and it sucks. what a great song. |

It is so sad, whenever I hear this song it make sme sad. This guy is on a date with a girl, gets in an accident and they both get hurt. he holds his date, which turns out to be the woman he loves, and kisses her. then she dies in his arms. it is so sad, eddie actually cried the first time he heard it. it touched him that much. wayne cochran's version is not as slow and dark, but it is depressing too. |

The Stones did not sound the same after Brian Jones died. His Sitar work on this song is amazing. Look at the music vidoe of this on youtube which is them live. Brians work on the Sitar is what makes the song. Keith Richards does not do much on this song, as with most stones songs, he is overrated and doesnt work much. |

I may be wrong, but my interpretation:
Son doesnt have to be your child. it could be an older man in war, like a veteran, dying to save the younger ones. Razed19 makes a great point but i dont think that is the meaning. everyone has their own opinion but i think its someone taking the fall (falling on the grenade) for others to live, and there is no greater valor than that |
