wow... this song reminds me a lot of what my ex and i were going through for the last few months we were together... constant fighting, one of us would get really ticked off at the other and threaten/attempt to break it off, and the other one would turn semi-suicidal (talk about doing it, but neither of us were ever willing to actually carry through on it) because even though staying together was just a world of pain, we were both somehow convinced that breaking up would hurt even more, and that given time, it could be fixed... eventually, i got sick of it, realized it wasn't going to get fixed, and said that i wanted to just break it off, and for whatever reason, she agreed. we're still close friends though... anyways, as some people have said, the song isn't actually about killing yourself to get back at the girl for breaking up with him, it's about being incredibly depressed over the break-up and threatening suicide in the hope they'll get back together with you. the bouncy-happy tune and the somewhat bubbly bassline serve as a counterpoint to the depressing lyrics to indicate that the threats are empty and shouldn't be taken seriously. not to mention the occasional sillyness... "I see you've sent my letters back and my LP records and they're all scratched" |

that second to last stanza, about telling lies, i believe i can explain, as i can deeply relate to it (at least as i interpret it). he's lied to her so many times now that it doesn't surprise her anymore, in fact she's actually surprised when he tells the truth. and even though he knows he deserves her distrust, it still feels like he's being hit between the eyes everytime she expresses it. |

| This version is pretty good, but it's not better. It's simply... different... Segar sings it the way he does because he is going for a more tired, worn-out sounding style. Whereas James sings it with his usual, gravelly voice, which gives it an angry, "i'm sick of this" feel. You're right that it is a saxophone in the background (your misspelling of the word "background" made me giggle a little, by the way), however, the saxophone helps set the mood for the song. replacing it with guitar chords just doesn't generate the same feel. | |

while i feel inclined to agree that this song may have been *influenced* by daoist (spelled with a "d" rather than a "t" since that seems to be the more accepted romanization of the word currently) poetry and daoist ideas, i doubt that the story about roger waters ripping it straight out of a daoist poem is actually true, because: 1. Pink Floyd simply isn't that sort of band and 2. Syd Barret was actually still with the band during the production of this album (it was, in fact, the last album he did with the band) and therefor waters wouldn't have been trying to write songs in the same style as those of barret due to the fact that barret was still the leader of the band at the time the song of written. |

aleen2112: no, that's waaaaaayyy off... although it's true that neil rides a lot, he would never write a song as shallow in it's meaning as that... As for the actual meaning, i think you pretty much all touched on it indirectly, but missed the grand scheme of things. it's similar (thematically) to freewill, another song about them. it's about going through life blaming fate, god(s) or what have you when things go wrong. he's saying that he's through blaming others (being driven) and he's going to take control of his life and own up to his actions (it's his turn to drive). |

DON'T BITE MY HEAD OFF FOR THAT.
