I was in Panama City this year for college spring break. And as I was entering the bar to meet up with friends I saw a group of 6-8 early 20-somethings with ragged clothes, beat up wear and a look in the eyes that they've seen much. As most college frat/sorority people looked on in disgust I got there story of how some hitchhike, some drive around the country and some just..Go. As they sat there with an old beat up guitar that was out of tune and a harmonica.. They belted out this song.Now reading the lyrics,remembering how strong and in depth the three singing were.. I knew it was coming from the heart. I'll never forget that moment. |

You guys got it right. Just sounds like someone that you, no matter how they treated you or the relationship, keep on going back to. Maybe not necessarily "in love" but just longing for the attention you once received from that person. Just for you to know that they crave you like you crave them.. Even though it'll end badly. -I'll go out with a lot of really good looking women on dates or hookups, but their is just this one that I still feel for. Not that anyone cares, but the idea that theres that person you just..Wish would come back or open their mind is quite compelling. Went back to her ex I found out, but hey to be honest.. Doesn't matter. Sadly I'd want her all over again if she wanted it. Guess it's just human nature to want what you can't have.

This song is so intense. I love all of Bruces work(especially his early stuff) but this song..Wow. There is this girl I've been seeing since May or so and we broke it off in June only to end up talking a few months later and are now again dating. She's been really hurt in the past and finds it hard to trust people and whenever i think of the parts she won't tell or explain to me.. I think or play this song. We could be laying in my bed and I can look into her eyes and I just know...Theres something there I can't touch or reach..yet. Some kind of wall she built up where I can't touch yet or reach. And it's hard to know some other guy was there before me but I gotta except it.. And I gotta except theres going to be walls and things all of us have to get through. Barriers, if you will.

Guys, the lead singer of this band states that Springsteen is his idol. No way in hell are the killers anything close to resemble anything Springsteen did. If you wnat to listen to real Bruce listen to the whole Born to Run album and Darkness on The Edge of Town. Then try to compare The Killers to Bruce. You'll be embaressed of yourself.
I like The Killers a lot but they'll be the first to tell you that they by no means are near Springsteen level of music. Stupidest thing I ever heard. wow |

I think this song is a Metaphor for people who find a passion in there lives and make something of themselves. He seems to be speaking about how some people seem to just exist but not 'live', as if dying little by little. The whole 'some guys come home' part I think is speaking of how some people found a passion and know that dreams are what make life tolerable. And they chase them dreams..
I love this song and saw it in Milwaukee at the Harley Fest.. He played for 10 minutes and it was the most beautiful and haunting 10 minutes of my young adult life(I'm 20).

well I finally saw the song live at Indianapolis, which many of you well know that was Danny Federeci's last appearance before his passing. And they played this song! What a special moment in my life as everyone sat down except a few of us who knew the song and sang in at the top of our lungs. It was a great moment screaming this song.
As for the meaning, It's about growing older and feeling you have bigger things than sitting around town. But the rush you once felt walking along the streets you walk are too much to bear for nostalgic reasons. It's a farewell to childhood and the young years to a beginning of whats beyond the town.
It's one of his best, thats for sure. |

I may only be 19 soon turning 20 but I'll tell ya. I work at a gym and I see many walks of life, and I see the 'pretender' type every damn day of my life. They'll come in with kids, a wife he may have loved many years before but they became bickering fools without as much as a glance at each other, eyes that wish he was somewhere else.
It's scary thinking my life could be what the song is about. Giving up my dreams to settle for a conditioned comfortable life in which I make enough to live in middle class suburbia. The song really strikes a chord because I think it's scary. Some people find love songs sad and all that, but I rank this up there as one of the saddest songs I have ever heard.
Simply, it's about being that guy with nothing but mediocrity surrounding him. A wife and kids is all he has, his dreams never fufilled. So he is left with a job he doesn't love, a wife he doesn't love and a life he wishes he didn't have.
Say a prayer for the pretender folks. We all know them and can only pray we don't become one. |

2 months ago my friend died at the young age of 18. It was very tough on his family, friends and others. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever witnessed and can say it the whole week was a complete blur.
I listened to this song one day afterwards and i have never heard a song hit so close to home. The beginning reminded me so much of being at the funeral and seeing his casket being taken away, it was an emotional time in my life. And still is.

Ya know I really can't stand country too much. And Chesney hasn't put out anything close to this in my opinion in awhile. But this song is so realatable.
I lost a friend recently at athe young age of 18 and I do stop in my tracks when I hear Billy Joels only the good die young I do stop what I'm doing and ponder. The way Chesney makes this song work is amazing, perfect job with the lyrics.
Music does take you places, I can remember High School and listening to Jack and Diane, getting ready for the weekends. I currently do feel frat parties and college bars, as a freshman. I do listen to Steve Miller band and rock all night long. I love this stuff. Reminds me of everything about my life, so far.
