Little Dragon – Klapp Klapp Lyrics | 9 years ago |
I hear you. The idiots who are controlling this site now are default getting the lyrics through some really flawed service. I emailed them when they did the same BS to me when posting correct lyrics, and just posted the correct ones as a comment on the flawed ones. |
Snow Patrol – Batten Down The Hatch Lyrics | 9 years ago |
Brian Wilson was the mastermind behind The Beach Boys, who created the seminal album Pet Sounds, among many other things. |
Katatonia – Passing Bird Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I originally considered that, but I also think now it might be "ammo" but perhaps because I don't want to believe Jonas so grievously mispronounced emo. I think most people hear the term emo and understand how to say it, so I'm going to go with ammo. |
Enon – World In A Jar Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Like the rain from above, or an ocean thereof. |
Enon – Come Into Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I think it may be "growing gills" for the men who swim there... |
Enon – Come Into Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I think it has something to do with "gills" for the men who swim there... |
Pinback – Bloods on Fire Lyrics | 10 years ago |
heroin doesn't make your blood be on fire. that's just dumb. blood's on fire because he's angry -- he's angry that his friend was taken from him. hence why the adjoining line is "calm yourself" |
The Book Of Knots – Midnight Lyrics | 10 years ago |
[Here's a rewritten corrected version for anyone who cares. 99% correct. Also, love Megan Reilly's vocals on this.] I work the mill The same as my father and my brothers, too My mother works there She has ever since she left school But today they all got let go I guess I'll have to keep this job Tonight I looked at the stars burning bright An empty house A lot like ours and never more... And I'll let go with nothing left to show What once slept hard Will come down At midnight [ Lyrics] People above us don't come up this river no more This town is like a stone We haven't seen the sun for days And I'm here working on my own And I wish I could leave But tonight Under the stars the building's burning bright A heavy hope That once was ours and nevermore But I'll let go with nothing left to show What once slept hard Will come down At midnight But tonight We'll pull it away The stars'll be burning bright Nothing more, But this house Will tell the story And I'll let go with nothing left to show What once slept hard Will come down Tonight Ohhh |
The Book Of Knots – Midnight Lyrics | 10 years ago |
I just wanted to let everyone I posted corrected lyrics to the poorly written ones online. And the morons at the new songmeanings and EMI (who don't own the lyrics anyway) posted the same incorrect version from another site instead of the one's I put together. Just wanted to let you all know I know these ones up are wrong, and I've already petitioned them to correct them, but who knows if they will. |
Pinback – Your Sickness Lyrics | 10 years ago |
ummm, BSL was released by ace fu, so i doubt it was them... I know Cutty Shark released some of their earlier stuff...like their first CD, the Some Voices EP 10" (which I have a copy of), etc., but they went defunct and I can't find much info on them anymore. |
Steely Dan – Your Gold Teeth II Lyrics | 10 years ago |
Kid Charlemagne is about a notorious acid dealer for the Grateful Dead, not cocaine. |
Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics | 11 years ago |
most people were not very knowledgeable thirty years ago about radioactive elements. carbon-14 was probably a radioactive buzz word (and easy to rhyme). they didn't have the internet back then, so if he referenced some obscure particle that's a product of nuclear reactor waste, it may have just confused more people. songs often take liberties....sting is obviously not a nuclear physicist, either. |
Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics | 11 years ago |
it's just a rhyming device. but again, no amount of radioactive elements are safe in humans. it's only safe because it's .000000001% of most carbon....if you had a chunk of any pure radioactive element, it would be just as deadly as any other. |
Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics | 11 years ago |
no radioactive element is safe. the only reason you think carbon-14 is "safe" is because of its low-levfel percentage in most carbon (1 part per trillion)... if you had a chunk of pure carbon-14 it'd be just as deadly as uranium 238 or cobalt 60. just because it's naturally occurring does NOT make it safe. that stuff should all remain in the ground where it belongs. |
Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics | 11 years ago |
not as rhymable. |
Sting – We Work The Black Seam Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Both are bad. He's saying that coal mining is dangerous, nasty, polluting job, but the people in the industry have no where to go. At the same time, nuclear power is not safe and they act like they can control it but can't (they still can't figure out what to do with the radioactive waste). Thus "one day in a nuclear age/they may understand our rage..." It could be seen as a commentary on "progress" as well. This is the dirty work that makes general bearable living of "Civilization" possible. People deep underground, stained black and getting sick, so that we may turn on the lights at home. And when the coal is gone, what will happen to them? All the more reason why we should think before we act, and consider the costs of industry.... Oh yeah, and there is no safe amount of any radioactive element. Anything radioactive can cause problems in humans. |
Foo Fighters – White Limo Lyrics | 11 years ago |
this song has weenie beanie written all over it. wasting light is where foo fighters should've gone after the colour & the shape. dave wrote the lyrics to this super fast. it's mostly just stream-of-consciousness. rock out to it & you'll find its true meaning! |
Paul Simon – The Boy in the Bubble Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Each verse also kinda reminds me of reading a news story in a newspaper. A bomb explodes and kills people. A drought kills thousands in Africa. Pop science. Sports. What miracles, what things that civilization and now the technological revolution have brought us. "The way we look to a distant constellation that's dying in the corner of the sky." -- ever wished upon a star? or looked at the heavens and prayed, or wondered if there's a god out there, if suffering has meaning, or the reason for your pain in the world? I think that's what's meant, but we're out praying on a star that long ago died out, even though we don't know it yet... "the way the camera follows us in slo-mo, the way we look to us all" -- for some reason this reminds me of those save the children ads, showing children with bloated bellies running, turning slowly. i think it means there's a certain humanity to be recognized if we really look at any other person. There's definitely a juxtaposition in this song between the developed, civilized world and those that still have to deal with rampant poverty, wars, /drought/disease, and so forth.... perhaps while many of us still sit in relative comfort and luxury, only giving the passing thought to the problems of the world, a passing prayer, but not realizing how our lives and lifestyles are intertwined with their suffering... I feel I see those that are horribly affected by these tragedies are out there praying as well, but perhaps in the song it mostly focuses on the passing thoughts of privileged western peoples... I can't help seeing it from the POV of those who experienced these things though. Sorry if this is piecemeal, but to me this song is still vignettes. This is what I see so far in this song. |
Garbage – Vow Lyrics | 12 years ago |
it can definitely be construed to be about drugs. the sound of the panning distorted guitars is great for a speedball. ;) people often use the combination of combining the ideas of love and drugs. robert palmer's "addicted to love" for example (just the easiest). obviously this is a truism -- sometimes, as in this song, even to masochistic levels. either way, i can attest it can sometimes be damn near impossible to stop. |
Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Well, it's hard to put a lot of these songs into total meaning.... as mentioned before, the Dylan-esque influences, its 'kaleidoscopic' kind of image-generation, and bringing your own experiences to it, all kind of play in. That being said, it does sound, first and foremost like someone torn between New York and Los Angeles. Perhaps a hipster from New York who's been sent to LA for the glitz and glamor of life in the spot light. But perhaps he's hip to what's going on. That "fearsome excavation on Magnolia Blvd," makes me think of all the retro shops there, of the has-beens, what-once-was, etc. He fears that that's where ultimately, he's going to end up. And speaking to that, there's a double entendre at the end, "Do you think that I don't see that ditch out in the Valley that they're digging just for me?" The Valley is specific here, as in southern California where all the movie and rock stars live in excess, but this guy knows he's just going to end up in the sale bin, essentially... So yeah, I don't have all the answers to all the images in this song, but that's my take on SOME of it... |
Isis – Backlit Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Also, I'd like to say I enjoy the double (or multiple) entendre of "Always object, never subject." Although it speaks to the idea behind Bentham's prison, it may also be read as a way to revolt. Always object to such control. Never subject yourself to them. At least, I'd like people to remember that. |
Isis – Backlit Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The meaning of "Backlit" is in reference to how the Panopticon worked. A central guard tower watched the surrounding circumference of cells, and by being backlit against the light, those in the tower were able to see all the prisoners, but not be seen themselves. In addition, the whole idea of the Panopticon was to engender control. But rather through actual violent control, it was much more secretive. Like society today (hence the album artwork of vast satellite photos of Earth), we are always being watched. The camera's eye is always upon us, and its silent watch engenders an amount of social control. We learn to obey, follow order in fear of its punishment. Rather than actually physically being coerced, we force ourselves to obey. This is the idea of the Panopticon. Prisoners monitor and control themselves. |
Guided by Voices – Hold On Hope Lyrics | 14 years ago |
My brother died of leukemia, my family split up... I've had a rocky time to say the least. Every time I hear this song (and yes, the first time was on Scrubs), it really resonates with me. Although I feel hopeless, hanging from a thread bare line, somehow this stripped down sentiment makes me feel pain yet still be able to endure. It's the last thing that's holding me. |
Stone Temple Pilots – Plush Lyrics | 15 years ago |
yeah, i don't think it's about rape, either. 'cause then what does him talking about the lies, or "where you going with the mask i found?" play into that? i think people are just overextending the meaning from some other songs of theirs. |
Elliott Smith – A Passing Feeling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
no one who has killed oneself is going to be hearing any echo of any shell. |
Elliott Smith – A Passing Feeling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the echo of a burst of a shell is a metaphor for the shooting heroin. the shell (charge) is shooting it. the burst is the rush. the echo is the feeling as it fades into the rest of the dull sensation. and he's waiting for that passing feeling again. it's so short, it only exists in passing. yet that's what every junky wants. that passing feeling. |
Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
he was writing music long before kurt ended his own life. in fact, nirvana had covered some of dave's songs (which were later destined to become foo fighters songs) at soundchecks, and were planning on recording them. had kurt not died, you might have ended up hearing some of his work on the following nirvana album! |
Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics | 15 years ago |
ha! yeah i used to think one of the choral lyrics was "one of these things is not like the other." Really, I think it fits well, because the whole song is about distinguishing one entity from another. |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
also, you might want to keep this tenet in mind: "Renounce your father, renounce your mother, all your family." -Principle of the Khmer Rouge. |

wtf does led zeppelin have to do with any of this? kurt cobain was the lead singer of nirvana. jimmy page and robert plant were the guitarist/vox of LZ.... |
Pinback – Bloods on Fire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think this song is about some friend's of the band. from what i heard (and remember), this guy has gone swimming after taking some drugs (acid i believe) and he ended up getting separated from the rest of the guys present and drowning. this song is a eulogy in remembrance of the guy. kind of reminds me of a story my dad used to tell me. he and his friends used to go cliff diving on the shores of southern cali, and one time his friend's little brother got caught in an undertow and sucked into an underwater cave and drowned. :/ life can be sad. |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
if you lock all the parents out, how will you learn anything at all? |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
no, i think there's definitely a satirical, cynical element to it. esp if you subscribe to the line "booze to tears." just like so many bright young generations of yesteryear, like youth itself, we feel exuberant, invincible, and able to do anything. but every time it seems like nothing really changes ... it just fades with time. sure, you can take it as a powerful anthem, but without recognizing the pitfalls of the past, you're bound to end up in the same empty history bin. |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
fuck you. swearing has nothing to do with the "hippy" movement. if anything, it is certainly not AGAINST swearing, since they are for free speech and expression. |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the hippie movement was something more of the late 50s and 60s rather than the 70s, so your explanation doesn't really make sense. |
MGMT – The Youth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
you are such a hippy. |
Elliott Smith – Junk Bond Trader Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think people bring up drugs in elliott's song so much because a: they know he took them, and given the stigma of many of them, they assume the addiction was the prevalent thing with which he thought, dealt, and struggled. however, it's much more correct to state that elliott often dealt with the idea of ADDICTION. now, for all you narrow-minded individuals, addiction doesn't just mean DRUGS. i mean, i'm sure most of you have seen "requiem for a dream." sure, that movie deal with drug addiction on the surface, but also addictions to TV, ideas of fashion and culture, etc. this is why so many of elliott's songs lend themselves to the idea of drugs -- because they deal with addictions. being a slave to things like trends, stuck in love, stuck being a slave to corporate society, and yes, being a slave to heroin and cocaine. you might also remember often times people on drugs trade being a societal slave to a slave of a certain feeling/state of mind. at least with drugs you're only worried about one thing now -- procuring and using that drug. |
Elliott Smith – Junk Bond Trader Lyrics | 15 years ago |
"junk bond" is also a term in its own right, being something sold (that supposedly has value) but is actually in fact worthless. just like trends sell people on the idea that they are "valued" by society, they are actually ephemeral and in their transience, worthless. the daily dose, here, meaning how people live by such bull day in and day out, constantly subscribing to the latest fashions, ideas, etc. and so on and on. it never stops. |
Pinback – Manchuria Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I can't believe y'all don't know what "Manufacturing Consent" is. What about "Land Without Bread," or "Juliet of the Spirits?" "Manufacturing Consent" is a book (later explored in a movie) by Noam Chomsky. It explores the role the media plays (alongside the government) in creating meaning, specifically what is considered important, for the people. "Land Without Bread" is a short film by surrealist director Luis Bunuel exploring the Las Hurdes region as an ethnographer's personal journey. "Juliet of the Spirits" is a film directed by Fellini about a housewife who explores her subconscious during her mundane life, the desirous life of her neighbor, her two-timing husband, and ultimately begins to indulge herself in desire and demons. In doing so, she gains awareness and independence. Perhaps similar to other works like Chopin's novel "The Awakening" or Flaubert's "Madame Bovary." |
Pinback – Rousseau Lyrics | 15 years ago |
IN ADDITION, Montaigne is a philosopher. Avignon is a city in the south of France. Lyon is another city in France. etc., etc. |

I know for a fact the Cleophus referred to in this song is Rob Crow's cat. |
Katatonia – Passing Bird Lyrics | 16 years ago |
maybe he's saying too much fucking M.O., as in Modus Operandi! hahahaha.... I understand how emo music has goth roots, but I think this song is more about goths than eh-moes. elmos. almost. los alamos. |

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think I agree with eremetic3, who brought forth some revealing information about this song. It seems like a troubled relationship, doomed to not work out, and so you just let it go. No one likes to this -- whether you have to tell someone it's not working, or be the one being told. Either way, it sucks. You feel down, out, bitter, unappreciated, etc.... But we're special in other ways -- ways our mothers appreciate. My sentiments exactly about the unsafe net. Those words can be so uncomforting sometimes, but they're the truth. |
Shellac – Copper Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think this song is exactly what it says: a song singing about the properties of copper. Gold being the best, copper pales in comparison. And despite its various properties, copper will never be gold. There's one thing I kind of wonder about: did I need the silver to be suitable? Also, I think the lyric is "as you buckle". |
Ween – Pandy Fackler Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I dunno if stylistically this can be compared to Steely Dan -- not really the same type of jazz influences, but I think there are other relevant comparisons. Let me preface by stating my opinion: Steely Dan is awesome. You could say they were the Ween of their own time -- excellent musicians and biting satire. I find it ironic my dad used to listen to Steely Dan and I'd sing along as a toddler, about pedophiles, prostitutes, heroin addiction, alcoholism...you name it. Will you one day do the same with your own children, listening to Ween? |
Elliott Smith – Going Nowhere Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"The old records sitting on the floor: the ones I can't put on anymore." I have this problem right now. Always and forever. |

I'll tell you one thing about this song -- Cleophus is Rob's cat. |
Smog – Palimpsest Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I hate when people don't bother to interpret the song, and just say "OMG TIHS IS SOOOO GOOD I HEART IT!!!" Waste of time, guys. "Palimpsest" is the first clue to the song. It means something that is multi-layered, or multi-faceted. Comes from old wax tablets whose inscription could merely be removed and another added. "Winter weather is not my soul -- but the biding for spring." This person is not the cold, desolate appearance that most see... underneath spring awaits to bloom, full of life. "Why's everybody looking at me?" Yet this is all they see. "Like I'm a southern bird that stayed north too long." He has been tempered and altered by the cold hardships in life. He no longer appears the same to others. The last stanza is a bit perplexing to me. "Winter exposes the nests and I'm gone." It seems like there are parts of him that have died and he has to leave them behind. I understand the feeling of no longer being recognized, no longer seemingly the same, no longer to be understood by others because life has changed you so. |
