although the theories of god are good, i really don't think that's what this song is about. i've always looked at this song as the ending of a failed relationship -- "the taste of freedom was sweeter than love cause you never had a chance to live" makes me think of someone suffocating their lover so much that they no longer felt free when they were with them (they never had a chance to live), therefore having the feeling of finally being free from the relationship was better than the feeling of love itself at first. then as time goes on then comes in the chorus, this person is enjoying the freedom of being without a lover yet when the day ends they miss being with their significant other, no matter how restrained they were when they were with them -- "you look around, you're wondering what you're doing" ... just a thought :) p.s. -- michael sounds so great in this song :) :) i love when he sings with music like this, it just seems to fit him so well in my opinion :) |

like a lot of the posters, after listening to this song over and over i've come to the theory that it's about suicide... And when it rains, On this side of town it touches, everything. (as much as this person tries to look on the bright side of things little by little each day, when something even a bit negative happens (when it rains) something negative REALLY happens, it really brings this person down (it touches everything)) You made yourself a bed at the bottom of the blackest hole (blackest hole) (this person has been through depressed stages more than a few times in their life, and no matter how it hurts, the bottom seems to feel safe, comfortable - like a bed at the bottom of the blackest hole) And oh, oh, how could you do it? i've loved this song for such a long time and after reading everyone's thoughts i thought i'd add my translation from personal expirience anyway -- Oh, life is bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes (he is in love with someone he's been with for a long time, and her love for him has tampered off over time.. she feels as if he's lost his "spark" - he can see it in her eyes. he will go to any distance to help her rekindle such feelings that he feels very strongly, even after such a long time) Oh no I've said too much I set it up (he tells her his feelings about him thinking she's falling out of love with him, yet he says a little too much and this upsets her greatly - he's set the standards for an argument) That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion (when he "starts a fight" (like others have said, "losing my religion" is a southern term for being angry - fighting associates with anger) and the girl becomes upset with him, he feels as if his feelings and worries have him up in a corner with the spotlights on him, as if the girl is waiting for what he will say next) Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it (as her feelings fade, she's becoming less familiar and she doesn't see or talk to him as often - he's not on the top of her list like he used to be. he tries to keep himself a part of her life in any aspect, yet it turns out unsuccessful. he feels exhausted and tired of trying to be worthy of her time -- he feels as if he can't do it any longer) Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough (back to the saying too much of what he feels, except this time he hasn't said enough from the fear of starting another fight - this causes the girl anger and confusion, the result of him not saying enough and leaving her a bit clueless as to what exactly he feels at that moment) I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try (meaning comes a little later) Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm Choosing my confessions (seeing as how in the past when he's told this girl his feelings and insecurities there comes less than wanted result, he tries to map out exactly what he's going to say when confronting her from now on -- choosing his confessions) Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt lost and blinded fool (as she becomes more and more distanced from him, he still tries to keep a close eye on her to feel as if he is still a major part of her life. his obsession makes him feel hurt, lost, and blinded ("blinded by love"?) like a fool.) Oh no I've said too much I set it up (again with the argument theory) Consider this The hint of the century (i always thought this line was "hit of the century", but "hint" makes more sense and makes my translation make more sense, too :) as this girl is out doing whatever it is she does without him, he drops subtle hints to her that he misses her and still loves her greatly, yet he does it so often he is beginning to feel a bit hopeless and sarcastic in doing so -- the "hint of the century") Consider this The slip that brought me To my knees failed What if all these fantasies Come flailing around Now I've said too much ("the slip that brought me to my knees" - slitting his throat? seems a little bizarre, but a possible reference to feeling so hopeless in losing this girl he loves so dearly that he is thinking as far as killing himself to make her care about him -- he is wondering what would happen if these thoughts, fantasies, became reality. the girl somehow learns of this and now he's "said too much" -- angered her yet again) I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream That was just a dream (it's still coming!.) That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough (again with the exhaustion of trying to keep up with her and her life) I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream (it's come to the point where she is very very distanced and he's not sure if she even considers him "her's" anymore. the more and more separate they become, the more he thinks back to the start of their relationship where there was laughing, singing, when the girl put effort into the relationship. it seems so long ago it doesn't even seem like it ever happened, or he doubts it did -- like a dream.) Try, cry, why try? (my favorite line in the song :) as he tries harder and harder for her attention and love the more it fails and it leads to him getting very upset, crying. now he figures, why even bother -- "why try?!") That was just a dream, just a dream, Just a dream, dream... lots of good meanings on here, there's my view on it :) no matter what the meaning though, this is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time! |
