"It was Jhonn's idea to do "Going Up," and to get Ian's friend Francois, whose voice he loved but I hadn't heard till he came to our studio one day, to sing the words. He did a beautiful job recording three or four takes at most. Jhonn who spent most of those months in his last year drunk in bed, sobered up specially that morning to 'direct' Francois' recording and although he said he loved Francois' performance, he seemed strangely non-plussed, put out, by what he heard, and even before Francois was gone, retreated into his room and the comfort of vodka... Apart from the short looped sample of the TV theme at the beginning, the melody was written by me from scratch in summer 2004. At first Jhonn was uncertain about the "pygmy style" funeral chants but grew to like them over the relatively few times we played the song together... Of course the original theme-tune did not contain any of the more complex overtones or interpretation given to it in the Coil version. Jhonn and I had joked about "Going Upstairs" as a funny euphemism for dying, for years. Hearing the list of departments as though described by a lift operator in the vocal, now always makes me think of Jhonn's love of acquisition. When he died we had rooms full of carrier bags of stuff he had bought but never unpacked (fortunately mostly from charity shops and car boot sales, not Prada). But this acquisition in some way here reversed, as though as he "goes UP" he is LETTING GO of his need for these material objects, the last of which to go is simply "teas"..." |

to me this really is a blatant statement of the philosophy behind buddhism, perhaps zen buddhism to me. there's no "meaning", there's nothing to believe, there's only the present moment to witness zen has no doctrine, no scripture, no teacher you can believe in, no claims to take on faith. there is only your personal path to enlightenment that you can only reach through your own insight and living in the present moment. all these things the song warns you not to believe in are things that can disappoint you when you find out the belief was unfounded. just don't believe at all, live in "now" and you'll be much happier. as far as I can comprehend, the idea of enlightenment is throwing off shackles of attachment that hold your head down and keep you from seeing the true nature of things. "put no head higher than your own" as Sasca sings in "blood". supposedly, part of the nature of enlightenment is realizing that everything is connected, that there's no duality between the cycle of rebirths and nirvana. one's fundamental perception of reality is another shackle that is thrown off, which I believe explains the line "Don't believe that anything's for real" "Whether you're facing inward or facing outward, whatever you meet up with, just kill it! If you meet a buddha, kill the buddha. If you meet a patriarch, kill the patriarch. If you meet an arhat, kill the arhat. If you meet your parents, kill your parents. If you meet your kinfolk, kill your kinfolk. Then for the first time you will gain emancipation, will not be entangled with things, will pass freely anywhere you wish to go." |

I'm going to link this song to two artists by influence and explain it in a glib manner. I almost hear another joy division reference in this song (much like "the procession moves on the shouting is over") in this case, "this dreaming takes too long" is similar to "this treatment takes too long" from JD's "the eternal" The song, I think it's from the point of view of someone who's been dumped. They had danced to a different drum, but he offered his love on barren soil and now he's trying to be grown-up and say fare-thee well. He has to say he's not bitter, so he really is, he's barely surviving, left feeling that the nature of things is random and ephemeral. The reference to a way of life and a different drum may be "the forest", perhaps a counter-cultural lifestyle dare I say? IF IT IS, well could this not be the same "The Forest" of Rasputina's "How We Quit The Forest"? "the scene was never what it used to be!" |

From a philosophical standpoint, if Buddha was onto anything when he said desire is the root of suffering, this whole song is, in my flawed perspective ... wrong. Wrongness, specifically, is wrong. This song is the root of suffering, where everything was desired and none of it realized, amounting to optimal disappointment. This song is about disappointment that it didn't go the way he desired. He passes judgement on everything, and puts himself on the wrong side. What if thinking this way is only guaranteed to drive yourself crazy with depression? "If you want to realize the truth, don't be for or against." Depression leads to a fallacious negative judgement of situations, as well as a feeling of learned helplessness, that one is doomed by their past and powerless to affect their future. I'm know next to nothing more than simplistic fight club philosophy, but in dealing with my own depression, my way of untaping myself from the wheel of this backwards-driving car is to stop judging things as right or wrong, to ignore the past and future and focus on the moment. |

There's a note of irony in the song and I wonder if it's intentional. On one hand, you've got "I ask you to hold me", "i ask you to love me", on the other, "stop asking for more". If the same person says those three things, there's a note of hypocrisy, that they speaker is not getting what she wants, nor willing to give what he wants. So you've got two people who want different things and are not willing/capable of satisfying each other, and the speaker shows contempt for her partner. You could probably switch the verbs around and create a fitting song to be sung by her comparably dissatisfied partner. |

However, he was leery and his trust was shaken somehow and he shut himself off to her. His act of closing the door shook her trust, and in her mind the dude went from "damaged" to "broken". Their mutual suspiciousness became a self-fulfilling prophesy, and in the aftermath the narrator consoles herself by justifying what happened in labeling him unfit, broken. | |

I'm not sure, but I think this song is a call to bullied suicidal kids to stay and fight. It reminds me of the "it gets better" campaign, which tries to stop gay kids from killing themselves in droves as teenagers. Everything's fucked up. "tyranny exists shrink beneath the ingrown thorns forced to accept pledge allegiance to a flag" The order needs to be fixed "to have respect you must accept the world committing suicide". So these kids, they're in a hostile environment "you must resist they want you dead". They crack, all the trauma hounds running to the road ("run to corrode"?) and getting splattered by cars. So some poor kid who's hounded and bullied to the point of ending his life, his suicide signifies nothing more than the rash act of an adolescent "helpless deaths ignored to be judged as juvenile". What do these kids say to condemn the flaws in the system? Nothing, they're fucking dead: "eternity keeps swallowing digested benefactors whose silence deafens anything" Ogre appeals to the suicidal to stay and fight: "what's the point of giving up leaving won't change anything" "to push away all growth within puzzles me offers soul to nothing" In other words, live out your potential, grow strong and change the world around you, instead of quitting early and dumping your soul into the void. Some live performances of the song have ogre singing through a hangman's noose, perhaps depicting the moment of contemplating eternity. |
