| I've always interpreted the Special Secret Sickness as being that time in a relationship when you know the other person is being to tire of you, and is eventually beginning to resent you. To John, this seems to take the form of a mystery illness his girlfriend has that is eating through her, the sickness being a slow burning dislike for him.He is trying to hold onto her desperately by following her down her "twisted alleyways". | |

There's something about Mountain Goats lyrics that make you want to scrawl them all over your bedroom walls in felt-tip marker. Anyway, like everybody else I think this song is about how you can be so normal and your life can be so inseperably mundane from everybody else's, but if you find someone really special, when your with them your life, your being, everything about you can transcend to a higher, wilder meaning. You become something like an elemental force, apart of nature (babbling brook, wild creature) |

| The Mountain Goats – This Year Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I always thought this song told the story of a day when a seventeen year old boy runs away from home. He "breaks free on a saturday morning" decides once and for all that hes had it with his presumably abusive stepfather and "broken home". He plays video games at a shopping mall maybe, and gets drunk with his similarily misunderstood friend Cathy. At the end of the day he realises that he has to go home, and live with the consuquences of his life until hes eighteen and can get out. Hes going to make it through this year if it kills him. | |

Funny.. I've always thought the song was a metaphor for a male best friend Kate has had for years, who she see's as almost sexless she is so close to him, i.e: "But you have got no body So why do you insist on wearing clothes?" By that she means hes practically a-sexual, because she has known him for so long. But the thing is, he DOESNT see her asexual, because boys are like that, he see's her for the highly fanciable girl she is. And he fancys her. Which is what i think she means by the "awkward position" and "unwanted attention". She doesn't want to go out with him or anything, but she does love him and doesn't want to "let go of you". Shes incredibly frustrated with him complicating things.. i.e, the whole verse about smashing him in frustration, etc. I dunno now though.. after reading all of the above I'm not so sure that was meant by the song. |
