| Curt Smith – Sun King Lyrics

Curt: "It's about my ex-partner [Roland Orzabal]. There was a Tears For Fears track after I left called "Fish Out Of Water" which is about me. I wrote "Sun King" after I heard "Fish Out Of Water." I was kind of flattered that someone would write a song about me. The whole thing was, in Roland's typical way, a very intelligent effort to write a song. And I'm trying to think of what would be a comical way of giving an answer. "Sun King" is incredibly base and angry. The thing is, I don't want people to get it completely out of perspective, even though it's incredibly mean and nasty. But when you actually start on these things, the song tends to take on a life of its own. The actual anger, as opposed to the direction of the anger, takes over. In the end, you semi-forget who it's about." |

Just a quick add to my previous post: According to Curt, the word is actually "Hlaajean": a reference to Hlaaj, a figmentary planet that producer Chris Hughes created. Curt told this story in a 1983 interview, and he recently confirmed its accuracy. |

Curt: "Impaled by trust: messed up by a previous relationship. Shot up with your four in the morning eyes: the new drug is the person who looks so vulnerable and innocent in the morning, someone you cannot distrust. She looks four years old in the morning!" |

| Curt Smith – What Are We Fighting For? Lyrics

Curt: "I was writing a song and Charlton Pettus and his wife were having some kind of fight," he said. "She actually turned around and said, `What are we fighting for' and that's how it started. I guess the song depicts how a two-person relationship works." |

| Curt Smith – Mother England Lyrics

Speaking of Mother England, from what I recall Curt stating in an interview, it isn't about a dislike for England, it's about carrying nationalism too far. Basically, it's speaking out against a belief like "America: Love it or Leave it." and that blind faith in one's country as being perfect is a poor decision. If your country behaves poorly (radiation experiments on an unsuspecting public, killing offthe elderly and disabled, etc.) you shouldn't continue to believe that your country is still perfect. - Travis Sonsalla

Curt Smith did answer him back with the song Sun King. He wrote the song after he heard Fish Out of the Water. It was later put out on the album, Mayfield - a band Curt formed circa 1997 which featured him on vocals and bass (duh), Charlton Pettus on guitar (also his writing partner), Doug Petty (brother of Dan Petty from Marry Me Jane) and Russ Irwin (he toured with Aerosmith once as one of their backup vocals) on keys, and Shawn Pelton (SNL drummer) on drums. |

Um, ok... first of all, it's not "illogical your world" it's actually "Hallajian world." I don't know what's the connection between hallajian and the song but this was mentioned by their manager in an exclusive interview on the DVD, Scenes From the Big Chair. |

| Tears for Fears – Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down) Lyrics

The bulk of the song was written after the split with Curt, and Roland admits the phrase "so low" is an intentional play on words (solo), however the chorus itself is a leftover from the Seeds Of Love sessions (released in its own right as the song 'Tears Roll Down', which was the b-side to 'Sowing The Seeds Of Love'). |
