It may be just because recent event, but this song seems to talk about the two party system and how we have to choose between the lesser of two evils, when things are just getting worse Take the following lines: "free to choose the better of the two worse paths to follow sun is burning so much hotter ... two sets of power" worse of two paths to follow - rep vs. dems, and the sun is burning so much hotter cause things are just getting worse, damaging us like a hotter sun burning us. |

I think Xypotion has an interesting idea with the concept of water, as do most of these posts about a 'personal' war or relating to the middle east, but there is a fact i think many missed. the Name of the song - The Captain, and 'we' - meaning his crew - they 'have all this water'. It makes me think of a ship traveling across an ocean... maybe they are going home after battle, and have another one to go... (offered one more lap) and they know they are the more powerful ones. Either way, it is easily related to any journey of life. Brilliant, as all their songs are. |

I saw he Growing Tour, and he did say that. This song reminds me of those times when you look up in the sky and it is that deep royal blue color that you just totally get lost in, while you are walking or just starring up... I think the line "i keep moving to be stable" is a bit ironic as well, he cannot be stable where he is, so he moves on, yet the mere thought of 'moving' represents a transitory image, one that isn't stable. |

This song is most peaceful, and it has taken me to wonderful places, but i think there is something else that phnxx barely touched upon- i think he is making an analogy of the high of [drug of choice] to the calmness of night: "Keeps us from the stark reality ... When everything is bearable And there in the still All that you feel Is tranquility" This makes further sense if you consider these lines: "There is a sound in the calm Someone is coming to harm I press my hands to my ears It's easier here just to forget fear" Notice that 'someone' is coming to harm, as the drug is taking him over, but he rather just 'forgets' about it, not that the danger has been eliminated. Now fully on his trip, he sees visions and a "rose tinted" i.e. a perfect world. I hate that many say a lot of songs are about drugs, but this one seems very obvious to me, as well as it is pretty much consensus that this album is about addiction/rehab. |

What has been said about Patton writing lyrics and him in general is very true, and i agree but, my brother once said to be 'i think this song is about masturbation' and i agree with him. Consider these lines: "Pour shame all over us Harden into a crust" that stuff gets crusty... "Better unsaid so close And it rolls off the tongue" maybe you are out with friends drunk.. and you ALMOST admit to it... "Smearing wet concrete and Swearing you'll never be ---caught---" yeah, do i have to explain this one? "I confess in quicksand" back to the shame element... "Relax" "It's just a phase" "You'll grow out of it" Common rationalization.. "It's the thing you hate the most The thing you hate the most The thing you hate ALMOST" Yes, we all hate it... hate to have to do it, cuz it is so pleasurable.... All that being said, masturbation is healthy, we should all do it more, and we should not be afraid to admit it. |
