Shinedown – Second Chance Lyrics 15 years ago
Reference the earlier posts...and maybe some of the later: The Halley's Comet reference is about how parents think their kids are God's gift. Obviously, most aren't, and some parents try to stand their kids up and push them to make them something that they aren't or can't be.....just to make them the 'next big thing,' or a success where they don't want to be......the 75 yr. kid. Brent's saying, "let me go", "let me do my own thing".......in the spite of his parents trying to do it for him. From a songwriters standpoint: Halley's Comet is laughing at Brent trying to do what his parents are pushing him to do to be the 75 yr. kid, which is not what he can do or even wants. "Why you always running in place?" (lot of effort but not getting anywhere) "Even the man in the moon disappears." (head out and do your own thing)

Nickelback – Burn It To The Ground Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is why Nickelback keeps selling thousands of records and why the critics don't understand. They can't "Figure it Out", no pun, okay, maybe a little. NB was the top grossing tour in the last decade, cause of songs like this. Like the album version? Check them out live, 50 times better....amazing! Have seen this tour twice and would definately drop the $$ to see them again. Last time was right up against the stage, grabbing beers and all from them. Couldn't hear for two days afterwards, lol! Song says it all... "...we're wound up too tight. I gotta fist full of whiskey, the bottle just bit me.....ohhhhhhhhhhh, that shit makes me bat (fat) shit crazy!!"

Guns N' Roses – Prostitute Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm behind Steve on this one, I think it's Axl penting out to the former GnR. I think more then a couple of the songs from Chinese Democracy are about that to be honest. But, on this one, on every verse...we're going from first to third person, playing on the naive, playing the daddy pants (I told you so, etc.). Verses and chorus's are mixed, coming where you don't think they should...goes together well though. This is probably one of the more in depth feeling/emotional GnR songs...

Axl is basically saying "I tried, I was there, but you weren't...." He's saying he tried wearing the daddy pants and taking the hit (media, etc), but others wouldn't listen or follow suit. Because of that, he felt whored out...and singled out. Now he's saying "F you", I was there trying, taking the hit and you didn't even know it.

Lifehouse – First Time Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, lets look at the meaning here...
(another great acoustic arrangment might I add!)
The song wasn't written by a teenage boy who fell in love for the first time....it's written by a middle aged man in regards to a current relationship. There were relationships in my high school/college days where everything was there, but it just didn't work out. As I can relate in my late 20's, have had quite a few relationships where it wasn't there, I didn't feel it. And then...all of a sudden, one (a relationship) comes along where it's there. It catches you off-guard, you don't expect it because you're not looking for it. Everything is there, and as the female states in this song...it's like the 'first time'. The butterflys, nerves, the stomach aches, etc.
That's what this song is about, it's about having had, loosing it and then coming across it again down the road. And all the while, not looking for it, but, just finding it as you live.

Edwin McCain – Sorry To A Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay....this song is probably one of the best acoustic arrangements I have heard in several years. D/L the acoustic version!!

This song isn't about the 'falling in love'. It's about the after effects of falling for someone. So much depth here, almost unbelievable that it can be captured in a song. It's about the things that you share with someone that you love and are in a relationship with....and then....after it ends, those things don't mean the same. I.E. "We're not the same people that we were before," and "The words are all gone." But at the same time, you almost wish they did....because you're back at the starting point, which is being excited about starting something new..."I've got so much to tell you....don't know where to start. Maybe I'll find a way, maybe you'll help me do it." I've been there, we all have. The song is basically about the duality of past relationships......while you loved them, you hate them.....and as much as we think they're behind us there is still a piece of them that will live on forever and make us who we are.

Three Days Grace – Pain Lyrics 16 years ago
People, it's about an emotional abyss.
Let's look at it:
Pain, without love
Pain, I can't get enough
Pain, I like it rough
'Cause I'd rather feel pain than nothing at all

This isn't about self harming or anything sexual. It's about the stage of feelings that occur between "nothing" and unconditional love. It's about seeking the relationship, not being able to find it and getting the "rub". The "rub" being the BS that happens time and time again. You get used to it, unfortunately. The writer would rather 'feel pain than nothing at all' because pain it what he is used to. Take one out of the rhelm of familierality and you have the unknown....which is what most people fear.....including the writer as the song is written. Couple that with not being willing to commit to anything more then what you are used to: you like it....without love. You like it....you can't get enough, you're used to it. You like it.....rough, because it hurts.....but at the samne time you aren't overly committed. (it's BS...the 'rub')

you're sick of feeling numb
You're not the only one
I'll take you by the hand
And I'll show you a world that you can understand
This life is filled with hurt
When happiness doesn't work
Trust me and take my hand
When the lights go out you will understand

This verse essentially means....."You think you got it bad....I'll take you and show you."

Anger and agony
Are better than misery
Trust me I've got a plan
When the lights go off you will understand

This verse is actually genius. The state of misery is basically caused by a lack of caring, lack of emotional fortitude and a lack of willpower. The penner is basically saying that he wants it, is able to be in it and understands the fact of hurting and feeling pain means that his emotional state is in tact......because if he felt misery his emotional stock would be expired. (Of course, the "rub", which seems to be the theme, of the song being that he will not commit to it)

I know (I know I know I know I know)
That you're wounded
You know (You know you know you know)
That I'm here to save you
You know (You know you know you know you know)
I'm always here for you
I know (I know I know I know)
That you'll thank me later

This isn't about a current relationship. It's basically two strangers who have been through the same "rub", time and time again. The guy is singing to the girl. Guys have a primative instinct to be protectors, ask any of us. This is the guy saying, trust me....I'll protect you....(I'm opening up).

Puddle of Mudd – Psycho Lyrics 16 years ago
No no, it's about a dude who puts up with alot of crap and thinks the girl is a nut, but he keeps putting up with it. Then after so much and so much, he has the all of a sudden revelation that...hey, maybe it is me and not you? (cause it keeps going on) Then at the end is the rub...he decides that "No, it's you and not me." The whole song is about indecisiveness in relationships.

Guns N' Roses – Better Lyrics 17 years ago
This song rocks. Axl has used sampling in past songs (present as well) and it's almost like he sampled himself
for the intro and repeating chorus. Awesome!

Correction on lyrics:

The hardest part, this troubled heart
Has never yet been through now
It to heal the scars that got their start
Inside someone like you now
But had I known or I'd been shown
Back when how long it'd take me
To break the charms that brought me harm
And all that would erase me
I never would or thought I could
No matter what you'd pay me
To replay the part, you stole my heart
I should have known you're crazy
If all I knew is that with you
I'd want someone to save me
It'd be enough, but just my luck
I fell in love and baby

All that I wanted was
Now I know you better
You know I know better
Now I know you better

So bittersweet, this tragedy
Wont ask for absolution
This melody inside of me
Still searches for a solution
A twist of fate, a change of heart
Cures my infatuation
A broken heart provides a start
For my determination

All that I wanted was
Now I know you better
You know I know better
Now I know you better

If I were you I'd manage to abort the invitation
Of promised love that cant keep up with your adoration
Just use your head, and in the end you'll find your inspiration
To choose your steps and wont regret this kind of aggravation

Counting Crows – Round Here Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok folks, the way I see it, and hear it......the first verse is spoken in three different tenses.

"Step out the front door like a ghost
into the fog where no one notices
the contrast of white on white."
This is the first tense, which is innocence....nobody notices the innocent. "Nobody notices the contrast" is because innocence, and doing right, is basically what's expected....and showing that causes no alarm. (as in being a child)

"And in between the moon and you
the angels get a better view
of the crumbling difference between wrong and right."

This tense is you being judged...by both a higher being and by your conscience, or yourself. What's in between point A (where you are at), and point B (where you want to go)....answer is judgement (by God, Allah, Buddha, yourself, your wife, etc. (think adolesence.....or the point to where you're questioning yourself)

"I walk in the air between the rain
through myself and back again
Where? I don't know
Maria says she's dying
through the door I hear her crying
Why? I don't know"

This tense is reality...what's rain? It's an acceptance of wrong...through myself is indecision. Air is free and clear, no guilt. Should I do this or not...it's being indecisive, not knowing to take the high road or the low road.

This song is crazy deep...back and forth. LOVE playing it on my guitar

Led Zeppelin – Tangerine Lyrics 17 years ago
This is just one of those songs. You know, the type that doesn't come out very often, and whenever someone hears it they think, man, I wish I would have written that. It's so powerful, but at the same time, pretty simplistic. Fun song to play in front of people too, because you know that just about everyone will have their own individual emotional reaction to it.

Days of the New – Touch Peel and Stand Lyrics 18 years ago
Seems to me to be about someone being in a relationship, not knowing where they stand and coming to find out they're being used sexually. Which, isn't a bad thing, hence the 'won't you touch me, touch me, it never bothered you before'. Touch, peel and stand is pretty sexual in nature, as in touch me, peel the clothes, etc. I don't think it's about abuse, but that could be along the lines of being a little shocked when first finding out where you stand in a relationship, but being cool with it once you realize it's all about the sex.
