The Protomen – The State vs. Thomas Light Lyrics 11 years ago
I think you're kinda right about the chorus not being "Just" Emily's voice. The Doctor, however, is ignoring their guilty verdict, and "confessing" his crime. The riot is, from what I understand, because he's spared the death penalty. Therefore, give us the rope is an indication of vigilante mob mentality taking over and wanting the job done themselves.

My two cents. *tips hat*

Yonder come is right. I also think it's "soldier worn a boot"...it would keep with the thematic usage of the colloquial past tense.

Mew – Introducing Palace Players Lyrics 13 years ago
These lyrics definitely sound off at pooints. To me, it sounds like he sings "so pecculiar, that it's the two of us" for example...and it doesn't sound like he sings overnight...sounds more like "every night turns all grey", etc...

Iron & Wine – Tree by the River Lyrics 13 years ago
My favourite line is "Happy just to be with you, and you were happy for me." To me, it's just such a sad ending to the song, and really sets the tone. On the first listen, it's a glorious narrative of young love. With that one last line, it spins the notion on its head, telling of a tale that was so beautiful, yet ultimately a love unrequited. Why wouldn't Mary Anne be happy to be with "him" too? Why was she only happy "for" him?

Umm, someone needs to fix these lyrics. the correct lyrics in the first verse are...

They're investing in this pricey music video
and they're playing to get it played on the radio.

and towards the end, it's

And now i'm singing with my gay voice
teenage girls love a sensitive voice.

This song, through the combination of lyrics and the music, make me think of rape, or at the very least, sex.

This is later still, but....

You have to check out Yndi Halda. It's awesome awesome music. Sort of dichotomically opposed in terms of mood, because Yndi Halda's REALLY bright/happy sounding, but awesome nonetheless.

Also.... www.myspace.com/electricoldwirenoise is the website for The Monroe Transfer, they're a local london band, but they write some amazing pieces.

Maps And Atlases – the ongoing horrible Lyrics 15 years ago
One of your lines is wrong... It's not a mime troupe stowin'. Dave actually sings "Like a match you've started, we're all aging double"...if someone would like to correct that....

Just a few thoughts about the lyrics....

I think the song is principally about change for the good, and how it's such a source of comfort, that no matter what's happening out there in the "big bad world", what you have is what keeps you safe, and keeps you content. Hence, the "we slept arm-in-arm, so soundly ignoring the outside sounds...."

The spinning machine I think refers to an old-school gramophone, and perhaps the shoes on shoes dancing is alluding to some romanticism being involved in the change I mentioned earlier, which goes with the notion of sleeping arm-in-arm with someone.

The match line might be about how once life's started, the only path left for it is to end, and so we shouldn't dwell on things and miss out on opportunities, which is another reason why I think the song's about positive changes in your life.

Two cents, if you don't mind....

Alexisonfire – You Burn First Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't know why everyone disapproves of this song. Though it's not Traditional AoF, it's definitely a kick ass song. It's got so much grit to it, such a dirty feeling to it.

As far as the production argument is concerned...Crisis is definitely more polished, but the musical technicality on the albums before this was of a higher standard. To everyone talking about how AoF opened with this...I've not had the privilege of seeing them live yet, but I'd always imagined them closing with this track. I'd definitely tear shit up if this was the end of the set.

Emotion is a great part of interpreting music. I suppose if you think this song is crap, it's because of some connectivity issues, which one cannot fault you for. But I felt an instant connection with the song, so...

I don't have the CD cover with me anymore, but correct me if i'm wrong...shouldn't it be a BULL in a china shop? it's another British metaphor, of someone who isn't careful when the situation calls for it. rather, should i say, a person who is reckless at the worst of times...

very moving. the first devendra banhart song i have sincerely liked.

"Please don't let what was get in the way of whats next.
Don't forget that whats to come hasn't come yet."

and that is the crowning gem of the song. the lyricism, and the delivery of that line put together is awe-inspiring...

ha, so i got most of the song's lyrics right by ear, except the benevolent change line....always thought Sam was saying "and the devil in chains", which i took to signify a superior position, sort of a holier-than-thou authority, albeit with good reason (presented by the devil in chains)

oh well. back the drawing board on that one.

Iron & Wine – Carousel Lyrics 16 years ago
moment of epiphany, or maybe this is the first time i've thought of it seriously....

the "almost home with an olive branch and a dove" shows the return of the central character, and how he's coming back to the ones he loves after a spat, or something of that nature. hence the olive branch (a sign of a truce) and a dove. (another sign of peace, and possibly love in this case) his return home is to someone who's A) abandoned their Faith and B) their faith in a relationship, which i'd guess is (in this case) her marriage with the central character. this is symbolized through the bible and the wedding band hidden on the TV stand, which also goes to show that it's not an overt abandonment, just something the "wife" has chosen to do unilaterally. the fact that she's out beating on a rug rings to me as if it's a show of how life seemingly continued as normal, still not sure of it's Persian significance.

and that's all i seem to have right now....oh, i might add. the "wife" is interchangeable with any significant female relative one might have...mother/sister/daughter, they all fit the plot...

Iron & Wine – Boy with a Coin Lyrics 16 years ago
to me, this song goes to show a lot of things. firstly, the boy finding something valuable (a coin) at the site of a carcrash. the first thing that came to my mind was that he'd acquired something innocently at the expense of someone else, the people involved in the carcrash. it goes to show the frugal nature of living; something of worth at the expense of another. it also brought to my mind how humans, as a collective, have desensitized, and can't be brought to feel the pain and suffering of others. the reference to bullets and trade magazines shows two heavy mainstays in our world; the bullets representing violence, and the trade magazines, commercialism and the dependence on/obsession with money. i think "God left the ground to circle the world" is an expression on behalf of God, painting him in a human light, stating how he loses his faith in people when they become obsessed with their selfish needs and wants. the car flipping is a consequence of God no longer watching over the people due to their selfishness. the coin may also be symbolic of something that makes him forget all the violence and economic strife in the world.

the second verse presents a much harsher image, though it is put with eloquence and subtlety.i think Hag has hit the hammer clean on it's head with the reference to the girl and the "bird" she found signifying rape, which is pretty much the most severe loss of innocence a girl can face. in this stanza, the reference to the eyes being made for crying and God's absence is to show the girl's resentment to God, who she feels deserted him right when she was born, leaving her to suffer through the trials and tribulations of life with no one to look out for her.

the last stanza refers to the same boy who found the coin in the first verse, and shows a bitterness so profound that even that something precious he found in this life (the coin) is no longer the same valuable it was to him. hence the rough treatment when sam says the coin was "crammed in his jeans". disappointed that nothing the boy wanted came of the coin, he threw it away into the sea at the cost of a wish. this is symbolic of him giving it up in a show of repentance, hoping that his giving up the coin will make the situation better. i think the last couplet shows that the boy is ready to accept whatever is to come, hence his walking back to the town that all of "us" are burning, again symbolic of the fact that humans, as a collective, are laying the world to waste. keeping in tune with the previous verses, the absence of God is again mentioned, the link again established that it is because of a lack of that something good (even though God is absent, his presence to me is shown in a benevolent light. that he is absent is how his lack of affection manifests itself) that people live their lives with reckless abandon.

the underlying theme of this song is ultimately the loss of innocence and the absence of Godliness, interwoven with a social commentary that deals with the two concepts intermittently. Brilliantly done. I'm addicted to this song, and i don't know when it'll be over.
