| Cocteau Twins – Song To The Siren (This Mortal Coil cover) Lyrics | 14 years ago |

cover of the tim buckly song with slightly changed lyrics. Based on the Sirens of greek mythology that lured sailors to their doom on rocky shores. Probably the most beautiful 3 and half minutes ever recorded by anyone ever. |

as much as anything the arguments/opinions here show how fantastic it is that someone can use the medium of pop to express deeply held opinions and beliefs rather than just "my girlfriend loves me/left me/whatever" type inanities that we normally get fed. Agree or disagree with the moz he can certainly stir up peoples emotions |

| The Fall – The N.W.R.A. Lyrics | 15 years ago |

My all time favourite Fall track from a brilliant Album. MES said that it is a Sort of SCience fiction fantasy story, not to be taken literally. The moral is that if the north ever did rise again they would probably stuff it up. No way to explain everything, but some reference points The NWRA - some people took this to be The North West Republican Army - MES always denied that. The Arndale - enourmous shopping centre in Manchester Sam Chppendale - the Dale in Arndale - one of the founders of the Arndale Culloden - battle between the English and scots in 1745 - hence drunken highland (scottish) men looking for revenge Joe Totale - the yet unborn son - presumably of Roman Total (RT XVIII ) the self created Fall review that they quote on some of the early albumn sleeves and the eponymous Totale's Turns. Check out the commentary here - very interesting http://thequietus.com/articles/03925-the-fall-and-mark-e-smith-as-a-narrative-lyric-writer |

| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – A Box for Black Paul Lyrics | 17 years ago |

yes Arne is right, it's about the Birthday Party. It was on the first Bad Seeds albumn after the BP broke up. Lots of vitriol for the music press - critics and the hacks - who he blambed for not understanding the BP and whipping up a frenzy around the band as he struggled to accept new found fame. and yes I think he sings "her Veil" rather than his |

| The Behan is Brendan Behan who was one of Shane's big heros "a drinker witha writing problem" and the whole song is about him, alcohol, and how all the words mean nothing when all you want to do is get pissed | |

| The Fall – How I Wrote Elastic Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
brilliant song, but you miss the key thing. MES actually sings Plastic man throughout the song. The whole thing is about people not understanding what his work is all about. Hence Away from the empty brains that ask How I wrote "Plastic man" They're asking about a song called Plastic man although the song is called Elastic. Also heaps of rants againts journos - for those not in the UK The Observer is a sunday newspaper which includes a magazine - eg self satisfied, smug |
