Love how the album begins with this song. Stating that their friend is gone and we as a band have to move on without him. Listening to Jerry sing this song you can tell that he is hurt and disappointed that Layne is dead and not able to be with them as a band anymore. Makes me sad when i listen to this song. I read in an interview that Billy did about this album and he said that he wrote and arranged the songs to represent a whole day, from morning to night. the first song, Mellon Collie, is like when the day begins (morning) the rest of the songs are i guess during the afternoon to day to evening, We Only Come Out At Night i guess is durning the begining of night time and the last song Farewell and Goodnight is the time the day ends and we all go to sleep. But it could also be about the band ending too. Billy was always wanting to end the band for a long time. Funny that now he wants the band back together and all the orginal members don't want anything to do with him and the band. |

I have to point out a lyric mistake. I notice that alot of you guy mention "wives" in this song. This might clear of the confusion of the meaning in the part: upon my face we leave no trace but in her stomach mercury aged she holds the blood she carves the knives she digs the "wires" in our babies I believe it means that she was pregnant ("in her stomach mercury aged") and she performed an abortion on herself killing there baby or babies. It's been said that some girls who do there own abortion use clothes hangers so that might be the wire she's using. :) |
