"Days Run Away Like Horses Over the Hills" (the closing lines of this song) is the title of a book by Bukowski.

U2 – A Sort Of Homecoming Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of my all time favorite U2 songs (bono has mentioned it is one of his). This song used to remind me of the conflict in Bosnia during the 1980's 1990's... To me it is the story of a man coming home after war, longing for his family or his wife/lover, thoughts going through his mind as he travels home. I think the versions from Unforgettable and Wide Awake in America are both great (the version from WAIA really captures what U2 is all about-- "build a bridge")...

U2 – Discothèque Lyrics 18 years ago
Just as American R & B and country influenced a lot of the sound of Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum, so did their exposure to techno and house music influence "POP". Apparently after the Joshua Tree/Rattle & Hum tour the band and their family/friends took extended holiday in europe, rented villa's and 'partied'...Some fashion models they knew at the time (probably from Adam who was dating Naomi Campbell) were really into dance/techno/house music and DJ's. and exposed them to the 'scene'. This is their ode to all that..

.. I have recently read some of Bukowski's poems (U2 dedicated Dirty Day to him) and you will find similar imagery in his work as in the song... he was part of the Beat genearation in America.

U2 – Dirty Day Lyrics 18 years ago
responding to munyeca's comments.. IT IS you that are dumb.. U2 was not founded as a christian band. Not doubt that bono uses biblical references extensively in his lyrics (especially Boy-Achtung Baby), but during Zoo TV tour era you will notice a difference in his writing style and band's musical inspirations. Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum were extensively influenced by America and American Music. A number of songs in this era were influenced by what they were hearing and reading at the time including American writer Charles Bukowski.

U2 – Dirty Day Lyrics 18 years ago
On the album Zooropa this song is dedicated to Charles Bukowski (writer of Barfly fame).. i havent read his material, but I bet if you do you'd find imagery similar/tone similar to what Bono is trying to evoke here

U2 – Until The End Of The World Lyrics 18 years ago
This song definitely has two story lines. It was written for the Wim Wenders movie of the same name. Some of the lyrics closely follow the plot of the movie which, if I remember, has two lovers and also has a device which allows people to see other peoples dreams. The song weaves back and forth between Jesus and Judas-- dealing with betrayal. and the movie, in which a characer betrarys another .. spikes their drink and stealing their money...

U2 – Acrobat Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Bono was very much referring to himself in this song and struggling to deal with celebrity and also how fans viewed him

U2 – 11 O'Clock Tick Tock Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one U2 song I've never quite figured out.. But I think coming from War fits in with those themes... to me, the line, "a painted face and we know we haven't long" refers to military people and camouflage paint.. children crying, etc points to some type of armed conflict happening...

U2 – Indian Summer Sky Lyrics 18 years ago
This song always reminded me of a spirit looking for release.. The lyrics above are not correct as this song has one of my favoirte lines of any U2 song.. it is not "two rivers run", But: "True Rivers run to deeper seas..ons change and so do I"

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 18 years ago
someone added in an earlier post that when performing this live Bono oft ads in the words "we will shine like stars in the summer night, we'll shine like stars in the winter, one heart one hope".. this is from the song "love will tear us apart again" and I thinksums up the meaing of With or without you perfectly..

U2 – With or Without You Lyrics 18 years ago
I think one of Bono's great talents as a songwriter is to weave together two different points of view in his song --either as a dialogue or as two different ways of looking at things. I think With or without you and One are two ends of a story. Listen to them back to back sometime. With or Without you is the joy and torture of a relationship, perhaps ONe (which is not a love song) is this person dealing with this one sided relationship first mentioned in With or without you.

Getting back to his double meanings or dialogues in songs.. listen to BAd..it is a dialogue between a heroin addict and a friend wanting to help. The sond "Until the end of the world" is from the Wim Wenders movie of the same name... it follows the plot of the movie, but also weaves to a dialogue betweeen Judas and Jesus... ALl brilliant storytelling.

U2 – Where The Streets Have No Name Lyrics 18 years ago
.. jumping in the conversation a bit late here, but wanted to address "robbwhite" comments from 2004 saying you can't call yourself a U2 fan and not know this song is about LA.. that is about as far off base as anyone can be.. the song had nothing to do with LA (only connection was the video was filmed there).. There are 2 key strands to keep in mind in this song... if I remember correctly Bono was writing about a town where the street you lived on or grew up on --the name of the street--implied who you could socialize wiith or hang out wiith (not sure what city he was referrring to). As with many u2 song, the ambiguity allows us to 'fill in the blanks' from our own experiences. However, a key image from Joshua Tree is the desert and hopes for a new life there. I think an intriguing way to look at U2's earlier albums are of war and it's aftermath-- the albumWar is about upheaval, Unforgettable fire is about displacement and alienation ("the land grows weary of its own", and Joshua Tree is the final chapter where displacement leads to hope....
