Men at Work – Land Down Under Lyrics | 1 year ago |
@[Clocker:41958] the actual line is "He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich", so keep mishearing those lyrics mate! Lol |
Rush – Secret Touch Lyrics | 2 years ago |
This song is about how despite being in a dark depression, being disconnected from everything, from the environment to normal human interactions, Neil is healed by an unexpected connection. |
Iggy Pop – China Girl Lyrics | 2 years ago |
@[RobotHouse:40954] "Bowie imitation track" Jeez! Lol |
Deacon Blue – Fergus Sings The Blues Lyrics | 2 years ago |
"Fergus sings the blues, in bars of 12 or less" ... THAT is how to write a line. Brilliant. That is all :) |
Kate Bush – Hammer Horror Lyrics | 4 years ago |
Thinking about this song's lyrics I was struck by the genius of one line: "I've got a hunch that you're following" I think this whole song was constructed in order to deliver thus one line ... sort of constructing a joke by starting at the punchline. The whole song is a joke ... but brilliant!! |
Rush – Chemistry Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song is obviously about the band - the 3 of them. The chemistry that makes them special. So many clues :) 1, 2, 3 Add without subtraction Sound on Sound Multiplied reaction. |
Rush – Workin' Them Angels Lyrics | 7 years ago |
@[grendel666:18751] Het Grendel, the use of the pronoun "them" is in this context equivalent to "those" it's a more relaxed, or slang/vernacular term. Interestingly the words come from an overheard phrase (can't recall whether it was Geddy or Neil who heard it) a mother was saying to her offspring "You've been working them angels overtime!" meaning they had been pushing their luck a lot recently. :) The song is about Neil reflecting on his life and the abiding images and memories that have punctuated his journey through it, and how he has always pushed his own limits, whether on bicycle in Africa, his youth as a struggling drummer in London or his motorcycle trips around the US. |
Belly (US) – Feed the Tree Lyrics | 16 years ago |
[Quote from SongFacts] Tanya Donnely was quoted in The Illinois Entertainer as saying this song was about commitment and respect. The metaphor is the tree that would be planted on large farms as a point of reference to getting around (the only tree sometimes). Because nothing would grow under the large tree, the family would be buried under it. Hence: "Take your hat off, boy when you're talking to me and be there when I feed the tree." [End Quote] |
Rush – Earthshine Lyrics | 16 years ago |
FenJazz - yes indeed. Also wonderful poetry in "Pale facsimile, Like what others see, When they look in my direction" he's saying looking at the moon like this should show a faint image of the Earth (light reflected from the Earth afterall) but it's not an accurate image. Similarly, he doesn't think people see the real image when they look at him or read his words - just a "pale facsimile" - you only get a vague impression of the real man, and it's likely that everyone sees a different thing ... just like we do when interpretting his songs!! :-) |
Level 42 – Running In The Family Lyrics | 16 years ago |
With two teenage kids I know how mad I would be if they were in trouble, but I *know* I was far worse than them when I was a kid ... I just thank their mother's calming influence! Great album this. |
Level 42 – Good man in a storm Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'd be interested in what others make of the 3rd verse "It sometimes scares me, the further we go ..." Great song. |
Level 42 – Good man in a storm Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This seems to be about the writer struggling with the knowledge that the person he portrays to the outside world isn't really the person he knows himself to be. He's "playing the part" of the dependable guy who others can rely on, one always in control of his emotions - "a child who never learned how to cry" - harking back to his childhood. There's a sense the writer is one the verge of losing his grip, as if it's no longer as easy to play this role, maybe due to one or more failed relationships, possibly due to his apparent lack of emotional vulnerability. |
