The Selecter – Three Minute Hero Lyrics 15 years ago
I always took it to mean basically being able to reach people through music. Not necessarily in a really deep way, just being able to make people feel good for, well, 3 minutes while they listen to a good song in the middle of a not-so-good day.

Tom Waits – Army Ants Lyrics 15 years ago
As far as I know most of these are true to some extent, though there are always exceptions. The praying mantis one, for instance, is true in some cases, but it's not necessarily the norm. The female will only eat the male if she hasn't had a substantial meal prior to mating. She does this basically because she needs extra protein for the eggs. The bombadier beetle one is very true, so is the one about the slave-making ants. The one about army ants is true if you're a baby or a small animal, but it's not likely that they'd be able to take down an adult person, or that they would even bother to try. The scorpion one I don't know about, but I have heard of scorpions stinging themselves to death so I suppose there could be some truth to it. I've never done much research into that, though. Anyway, I love this song. I'm studying entomology in school right now and I've always loved this kinda stuff so this song definitely increased my liking for Tom Waits quite a bit :)

R.E.M. – Stand Lyrics 15 years ago
What's wrong with the Sidewinder?? I adore that song. I agree with you, though. I wouldn't call this song stupid. Simple, definitely. It's kinda hard to miss the meaning, but that's what I like about it. It's direct, almost to the point of being condescending. "Your feet are going to be on the ground. Your head is there to move your around." should be obvious, right? It's like they don't trust people to know what to do with themselves or, especially, with the world around them. That's fine, though. We need reminders sometimes. I love this song. It's catchy as hell, too.

The Specials – Little Bitch Lyrics 15 years ago
I wouldn't call this song misogynistic. It's certainly insulting to a specific type of woman but not, by any means, all women. I feel the same way about the kind of people that are being described in this song. The pathetic rich bitch girls who complain constantly about their lives despite the fact that they get everything handed to them and the only problem they have is the fact that they never learned to be even remotely self-sufficient. Especially attention whores who constantly talk about how depressed they are and how they want to kill themselves but never bother to do anything about it. I can't stand those people. If anyone thinks that description fits women in general or that this song is about women in general please, let's meet somewhere, and I'll introduce you to some real women. I'm not saying everyone needs to be happy 24/7 or that complaining about little things is always uncalled for, but there are definitely people who take it to excess, especially women (many seem to think being self-sufficient is somehow unfeminine) and that frustrates me off to no end. I ADORE this song.

Firewater – Electric City Lyrics 16 years ago
This may be my favorite Firewater song (that I know of), this or "Already Gone" ...Or maybe "Some Kind of Kindness" ha. I don't know. I love them all. I need to get more of their stuff.
And amnesiaclyric, I have to thank you. Apparently you've added the lyrics for just about all of the Golden Hour and I haven't been able to find them anywhere else. I appreciate the dedication, ha.

Otep – Menocide Lyrics 16 years ago
I love how there are intense debates happening over who's more oppressed than who and who's more of a hypocrite. If you know anything about Otep's personal history you know she's been raped and abused quite a bit. As far as I see it the music is just a way to vent her anger (and she obviously has a lot of that--understandably) without actually doing anything destructive. You don't have to actually want all men to die to appreciate the frustration evoked through a song like this.

Haha. This song reminds me of a conversation I had with an old friend about the ethics of shoplifting. Fun stuff.

Choking Victim – In Hell Lyrics 16 years ago
Can't decide about this one. On the one hand casual acceptance isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially when there's nothing you can do to change the situation. On the other hand that attitude here seems a bit like giving up without really trying. Although, I don't really know much about the personal history behind the song (assuming there is one) so I guess I can't really make any assumptions.

VAST – Thrown Away Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it's necessarily about being dumped so much as not knowing where you stand with someone. "Should I call you/ Should I reach out?/ It feels like chasing shadows in the night" makes me think he still has reason to believe things could work out, but he's not getting any definite answer and, perhaps, is even having trouble keeping in touch with his potential love-interest.

Squirrel Nut Zippers – The Suits Are Picking Up The Bill Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about wealthy business men who show up as these guys are being escorted out of the restaurant (btw rjbucs28, you forgot "get 'em outta here" after "throw 'em out the door and close 'em", that's my favorite line lol) and offer to pick up their tab. It's amazing. Stuff like that should happen everyday.

Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta Lyrics 17 years ago
It's Catch 22!
I can't believe no one's gotten this, yet! It's about Jefferey Heller's novel "Catch 22". Read the book there are tons of obvious references to it and even the more vague lyrics can still be interpreted in relation to the book.
If you ever read it you should be able to pick up on it easily. For instance the chorus "I'm not sick but I'm not well" is basically the whole point of the book, the rule that states that someone can only be sent home (from the war) if they are crazy and anyone who agrees to fly the dangerous missions has to be crazy but in order to actually be released home they have to ask to be sent home which automatically proves that they are no longer crazy and therefore have to keep on flying their missions (crazy, not crazy--not sick, not well).
"They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee" probably refers to a scene where the character Kid Sampson is accidentally cut in half by a helicopter and his legs are left standing for a minute.
"I wanna publish zines" refers to the character Hungry Joe who constantly tries to take pictures of women by telling them he's a photographer for Life Magazine (which he was before they went to war).
"Paranoia paranoia, everybody's coming to get me" is definitely about Yossarian (the main character) who is constantly paranoid and thinks everyone is trying to kill him (which, in a sense, they are).
"If you're bored then you're boring" is just an example of a catch 22, the way the phrase is casually used in modern language.
Even the beginning could easily refer to Yossarian's girl Luciana, or to Nately's whore (read the book).
Also, flagpole sitting was a fad in the 1920's that was modeled after an old practice of sitting on top of a flagpole for as long as you could stand it to test endurance (usually there was a small platform attached to the top of the pole). The line "run it up the flagpole and see who salutes, but no one ever does" might have something to do with Yossarian's working so hard (as well as his coworkers) and flying so many extra missions without any recognition or any kind of break.
There's a lot more I could say about this but I think that's enough for now. If you haven't read Catch 22 I highly recommend it. That book is amazing.
