This is one of my all time favorites, a song of heartache and insecurity... but I believe Terry Kirkman said in a concert once that he had written this song for the woman who later became his wife. Much like Elton's "Your Song" (written later), it's about a guy who can't say it to her directly, so he says what he wants to say in a beautiful song. And what woman can resist that? |

This song is so catchy and upbeat, all right, that it is easy to not realize it was written about a drug dealer. Take another good look at the lyrics...to hand me a "rainbow"... tripping down the streets of the city...wings to fly above the clouds. Like Along Comes Mary, and so many songs of the time, the the lyric has a hidden meaning, covered by the upbeat tune and beautiful harmonies. It had to be hidden to get away with it then, unlike today. |
