I agree that something other than the impending death of his father is tormenting this guy and that is the reason the woman gives him the flowers. Death of his mother seems likely. The thing I find odd about the lyrics is He didn't care about us when he was walking around Just pulling women over in a speed trap town Walking around pulling people over? Don't you do that in a car? Maybe I'm over thinking it but I know Jason Isbell chooses his lyrics with great care and it wasn't just a mistake, and it seems like a very odd choice to me, especially since "driving around" would fit into the song just fine. |

"As if she had defeated her desire" This line kills me. Once again Isbell squeezes somebody's life story and their general outlook on life into 2 verses and a chorus. One of my favorite songs on "Something More Than Free". |

I think you guys analyzing every word of this song looking for some deep symbolic meaning are going a little too far. It's just a funny story about a dopehead conspiracy theorist that took too much acid and thinks he got abducted by aliens. Also, it's obviously about LSD. DMT makes no sense. Blame Hoffman Dead Head Chemistry Blotter got on top of me It's about LSD. The real point of this song is not the lyrics, you can't even understand most of them, its' about the guitar solo between "because this shit never happens to me" and "Can't breath right now". Maynard could just be babbling nonsense (he pretty much is) and this would still be a kick-ass song. |
