| Jack's Mannequin – Dear Jack Lyrics

You can take it that way if you want, but this was written before Andrew was diagnosed. The song was for his friend, Jack, and he also named Jack's Mannequin after him. In a way, this song was sort of the start of JM because he didn't feel it would work with SoCo's music. But the fact that Andrew also got cancer is just a freaky coincidence. |

It took no time at all for this song to grow on me. I thought it was beautiful and loved it from the moment I heard it, especially once I figured out the lyrics. These lyrics are only part of the song. I guess it's going to be another long one, like "Konstantine." I can't wait to hear the rest! I have a feeling it'll be one of my favorite JM songs..
To get into the actual meaning (since that's what this site is, after all), it's obviously about his cancer. The bird dressed in white represents a nurse, the stings are the needles... I think I read somewhere that pazine is a drug given to cancer patients. There are several meanings, I think, to the word "marrows." It could be referring, in part, to friends or strengths or whatever. And then there's the literal meaning since he received his sister's marrow, which saved his life.... I do wonder about the line "have my lungs, but you can't take my sight." I know he almost died from pneumonia, but I wonder if it affected his sight.... Either way, I think this will be one of those "perfect" songs.. |

I think there could be several meanings to this. I've heard it was written before he had cancer, which makes it really eerie.. It could be about how he felt on tour... However, I also think it would fit for a crazy and/or extremely paranoid person, probably in a mental institution. He talks about the infirmary, wires, the woman with the drugs, etc.. |

| Evan and Jaron – Pick Up The Phone Lyrics

I think of this song, along with "Close My Eyes," as asking God for help. I think it's kind of subtle, which makes it even better. The line about getting the "number" from a friend who said it would be all right to call could be about a friend saying he should just ask God for help. There are a few others that make me think it's just about asking God for what he wants.
"I know you're busy, and I won't keep you long" just means that he knows God gets a lot of prayers.
"If you know everything that happens to me, why do I have to ask you for things that I need?" - Since God is supposed to know everything we want, he doesn't understand why he still needs to ask for them.
"What about people who don't even call 'cause they don't have the number? Do you help them at all?" - This is just about the people who may not know God, and he wants to know if God basically has mercy and still helps them or leaves them alone.
"Every night I sit and stare at the wall in front of my face imagining you're there talking back to me so that everyone can see that I'm not so crazy after all." - Maybe he's accepted God finally, but he's sort of worried of what people will think or that they'll wonder if he's crazy because he seems to be talking to himself or something... |

To put it simply, I think it's about people in general. No matter how good or bad things are, everyone just wants someone to blame. We really just need to respect each other and work together. People take the good things for granted and sometimes take advantage if they have too much power... |

| Evan and Jaron – Could've Been James Dean Lyrics

This is probably my favorite Evan and Jaron song because it seems so simple, but when you really think about it, it can be quite deep. I think I read that they actually wrote it about an actual bum they met, but the way they write it is much deeper. This bum is someone that, obviously, no one else thinks much of because he's just a bum. To the narrator, though, he's an interesting person, who is really just like anyone else. He could have been someone, but he's just a bum now. I think the narrator actually relates to him because he seems to think no one really notices him until Lucy does, and everyone just notices James negatively. It's another cold day, and James probably doesn't have much to wear (while they make a point of saying that they spend more time getting dressed than where they go), but everyone is also cold to him. It kind of makes other people seem selfish because they treat him badly and "no one ever gives a damn, unless they've got something to sell." Unlike everyone else, it's clear that James and the narrator genuinely like each other. It sounds like they probably have gotten coffee more than once because they like to talk and hear each other's stories. They both seem to have a big impact on each other's lives since they're pretty much alone.... |

This is one of Evan and Jaron's best songs. I actually like to think of it as him asking God ("a name without a face") for help. He feels lost, and everything he tries just doesn't work. It sounds like he's suicidal and just wants it all to be over. |

| Evan and Jaron – Watching The Rain Lyrics

I think this is about a transformation in attitude. He starts out not wanting to watch the rain, especially alone, and then he ends up loving it. It's kind of a renewal thing, like rain, and about learning to appreciate the little, "mundane" things in life and not take them for granted. |

To me, this song is just about missing someone you can probably never have to the point that it literally makes you sick.. I think this part (my favorite) says it all: "And I don't care if you don't love me. And I don't care if you don't change. I could live inside the shadow that I cast for you if it meant that you would stay." I think he loves her just the way she is and doesn't care, in a way, if she doesn't feel the same. He just wants to be with her, even if he doesn't really deserve her (i.e. living in her shadow, like she's too good for him). He's willing to wait and do whatever it takes for her, despite the fact that she might not feel the same. I think the line about "when does this twisting end" could mean that maybe he wants to get over it or just wants to be there, but he'll still wait for her.. Basically, he just misses/wants someone he can't have because of a physical or emotional distance or even both... |
