| Animal Collective – Lion in a Coma Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
Something to consider - in my opinion the title and the lyric "Lion In A Coma" is Avey's phonetic extraction of the sample that the song is built on. In other words, I'm betting Avey got that sample going, derived some sense of phonetics and cadence out of it, and heard "Lion In A Coma," around which he built the lyrical motifs. This sounds like such a Animal Collective thing to do. In fact, on What Would I Want? Sky - that's exactly what they did with the Grateful dead sample. They misheard the cut up piece of the sample as a different lyric. |

| Radiohead – Spectre Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| I disagree with Tyler2004Durden. I think this tune is an amazing fusion for the two cultural worlds Radiohead and Bond inhabit - and Radiohead, being tasked with doing an appropriate tune for the series, hit the nail on the head the best they could - references to physical love, bullet holes, death, all wrapped up in an epic, smoky ballad complete with it's own brassy big band and searing string arrangement. Truly, it has all the makings of a bond theme. | |

| Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – When I Open My Eyes Lyrics | 9 years ago |
| I think it is "fired for this," and I think the song is about apprehensively entering a work relationship (or maybe a forbidden relationship, but it takes a 'work' metaphor here). Driven home by "I don't know how" turn into "I'm gonna" as if he's confident it's fine one moment but scared the next. "I'm not scared...wait" also aids with this device. | |
| Dirty Projectors – the glad fact Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
A fairly straightforward and (in my opinion beautiful) sentiment. It's a song about dilute motivation and dulled senses, wrapped up best by the word 'ambivalence' in Longstreth's words, and how despite your own (seeming) desires and drives, it can be a restricting feeling. Being stifled & suppressed despite clear direction and energy. This conflicting feeling leads to 'going again,' as if it's an endless cycle, and even trying to break said ambivalence is another 'faint-hearted' attempt in itself. 'Feelings for girls' lines drives home the desensitization piece a bit further. Moreover, I like that the word 'Paralyzing' is sung so fervently and desperately, that and of course the choruses. Further illustrates the motif of having latent energy, having real desire, but having it be suppressed. "Here we go again..." |

| Dirty Projectors – Offspring are Blank Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I can help but think this is about environmentalism, specifically the intergenerational problem. The general idea is that as we pollute more and more, we'll essentially have a desolate, nearly uninhabitable earth for future generations. With this background... "There was a single one..." = We're populating and populating to the point of overpopulation, a huge factor of pollution. "...But their offspring love them" = As humans, we have every right and drive to love each other and reproduce, and we deserve to have children as well, who love them back. "Marriage of eagle and snake...offpsring is blank" = 'Eagle and snake' could be a historical nod or some sort of folk lore, but I just take it to be stylistic and add it to the dramatic foreboding sort of vibe of the song. Anyway, the parents are fertile and all is well, but their offspring will be moot if there is no earth to inhabit. "Fire rages on...heat feels alright" = We're okay or at least blissfully unaware of the destruction we're doomed to cause. Which segues nicely into... "can't recognize our poverty" "Darkness...silence that can swallow sound" = Another apocalyptic picture of reality, presumably as a means of our pollution. I also think that the form of the lyrics are telling. It goes from identification of life and fertility to merely mentioning a sort of 'erased' reality. In that sense, it also drives the point home. All in all, I take it to be 'we're destroying ourselves,' but we're so conflicted by the very clear right to love and reproduction that we undoubtedly have. |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This is a concept after all, and I've tried to put together a linear story from start to finish. However I always run into songs like "Holland 1945" and start to think that maybe the album is just a bunch of anecdotes regarding the time period of the Holocaust, and perhaps (heavy) references to Anne Frank. However the placements of instrumentals leave me to believe there is a linear story, regarding a "King of Carrot Flowers," a "Two Headed Boy," "Comely," etcetera. In this song, I feel it's the emotional low. Whereas "Ghost" is an acceptance of death, "Oh Comely" is the death itself. I couldn't tell you how I think the story goes, but it's clear that here, the character is grieving over his dead lover as a result of the Holocaust, (the presumable Anne Frank,) while under the flimsy protection of his abusive parents (the King of Carrot Flowers.) It's very haunting and sad, obviously, and I don't know what Goldaline has to do with anything. But the fact this precedes "Ghost" I feel is important. |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
The whole anorexia thing, though ambitious, is clearly not what Jeff is talking about here. And we all know it. Either way, I didn't realize that he drew SO heavily on Anne Frank's story, to the point where she's basically referenced as "Anna," and if that's not exactly her, then it's a character clearly inspired by her. As for the "how I pushed my fingers through your mouth" line, I always took that as more...sexual. You know, the mouth is SOMETHING ELSE. ;). To make those muscles move, (spasm,) and make your voice so smooth and sweet (make you moan.) After all, this is Jeff Mangum, who has some of the grossest, sexual metaphors out there. Cue "Oh Comely"... (His father made fetuses with flesh licking ladies, etc.) |

| Radiohead – Go to Sleep. (Little Man Being Erased.) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Look, any vague political criticism that is produced NOW or when Bush was around is all "AGAINST THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION." No, it's not all. It's so fucking annoying. Just because a negative political statement is made and Bush exists doesn't mean that the two are always paired. Thom has said himself in various interviews that "Hail To The Thief" was partially inspired by his (rather recent for that time) epiphany with how the political system works. And he was just enraged by it. He didn't like the idea that a whole group of people must somewhere taper down to one administrator, and essentially stiff everybody. I mean, that's a general discontent he had with it. He just didn't like all the "bullshit," the needless mumbo jumbo that's hurting people instead of helping them. Point is, it's not fucking about Bush. Thom lives in Britain. Why the fuck would he feel so affected by American politics? This album has a personal touch to it. It's not a complete outward statement about politics. Thom 'aint a protester, yuh heard. |
|
| Radiohead – Go to Sleep. (Little Man Being Erased.) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| James W. is right. Why should any negative political criticism automatically be assumed as pointing towards Bush? It's fucking stupid. You're as close-minded as Bush if you do that with every damn thing you see. | |
| Tobacco – Gross Magik Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Yeah, I was having trouble with "Sunbeams all around us now..." Thought it was "sunbeams all around the snow." Which, Tobacco has been known to bring in snow, but as far as I'm concerned his nature imagery is almost strictly "the sun" and the trees post Satanstompingcaterpillars. :P | |
| Incubus – Monuments And Melodies Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
A man lost without his girl? Poor Brando! This song is beautiful, yes. As with every incubus song, I had to warm up to it, as some of you had said. Funny how that works, I start out disliking pretty much every Incubus song, and then they slowly become top songs in my whole library. (S.C.I.E.N.C.E as a whole was an exception..heh.) |

| Incubus – Martini Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The sound of the tune and the general references to some "fancy party" (Martini is the obvious symbol) seem to indicate that this girl he's illustrating is the pretentious, flashy type. Generally it's a statement to all of those arrogant people, but in this case it's a particular woman that's "larger than life." Perhaps the gender difference is a means of showing that love/humanity/compassion trumps this pretentious outlook a lot of people like to put out? (Come down and I'll give you something to cry about.) Not necessarily a masochism, but sort of a "Silly girl," *taps on nose* type of idea. You know, let me show you my world, type of thing. Also, the Mona Lisa line really speaks to me. I hate the type of people that make something and present it in this overly extravagant, arrogant light and try to pass themselves off as hip. Argh! Obviously the Fly in the Martini represents that even this uppity woman can taint elegance...yay, nay? (Also, Zee Deveel and Megalomaniac come to mind. Generally anti-ego and useless extravagance...) |

| Incubus – Are You In? Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
On the contrary, I thought this song was Incubus' last hurrah and sneaking a drug reference into their music. It's all just speculation, (And they have since abandoned drug topics in recent songs,) but judgin by the music video and the song itself, I just figured it was everybody tryin's take a hit. You want some? Know what I mean? My only real evidence for that though is simply because they've been known for drug references, sometimes subtle, sometimes not, and that it's valid because there's not much content to work with here. |

| Incubus – A Certain Shade of Green Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| One way to visualize it is you, sitting at the driver's seat, with Brandon Boyd's in the passanger seat. The light turns green. You wait 2 seconds and Brandon's just like "What the fuck, go!" | |
| Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I thought it was a pretty general explanation of how men can really be "Pigs." (A running theme throughout the entire Album...) And that men, or humans in general, can be overtly indulgent and craving, to the point where they lose their respect for other people (Women, in particular) and forget their morals, just to get a piece of the pleasure they want. And let's face it, it's completely true. So many people nowadays are just so lost in their craving for sex. |

| Incubus – Leech Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
My personal unbiased interpretation is generally just about a friend/girlfriend/significant other, etc, who is constantly taking advantage of the the character in the song. "It's easy to get high when you're standing on our backs," etc. This line specifically suggests that it's not mutual, and that the other is being intrusive on his/her attempts to 'enjoy' the others thigns/company. The fact that it's called 'Leech' should be enough, though. I think the whole "The Ride's Over" line is referring to the ahole biological 'parasitism' relationship, amongst animals. One benefits while the other is hurt. Using the leech as an example, it sucks onto the skin and latches onto you as you move about. "The ride's over" suggests that you know, He brushed the leech off, "are you happy now?" sort of attitude, "did you enjoy sucking the life out of me?" It stands for itself, really. Great song though,e h? |

| Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I personally think it's about the guilt one feels when someone has really fucked up, the main one in my brain being lying. All the reference to 'snakes' is parallel to satan, as well as the 'heaven send hell away' deal. I think that he's saying we all can be snakes and the snakes within us are secretley eating away at everybody, wether you no it or not. He's just so overwhelemed by the double-handedness of so many people, the amount of people that are double crossing each other. he's saying that everyone has pulled a fast one on someone else sometime or another, and no one is truly honest. And since no one is safe, the black hole sun (Which is the apocalyptic symbol here) has to wipe out humanity, because humanity is a bunch of lying dirty snakes. | |
| cLOUDDEAD – Dead Dogs Two Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I agree mostly with S-Fury, yeah. I mean, excluding the whole story about the guard dogs, assuming that this whole scenario he sets up is useless for the sake of interpretation, in short, we all want to be 'Red Tendoned Dogs,' constantly nurtured and tended to. You want to make reasons for people to notice you, to be a red tendoned dog. And the line 'it's hard to stand the sight of two dogs dead under a sky so blue' is my basis. No matter what your reasoning, any good person would never up and ignore someone in big trouble while everything else is fine. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – Thank God Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The backmask at the beginning does not sound anything like We Are All Drunk Physics. it sounds more like We Are All Drunk SCIENCE, If anything...but I don't think it's a backmasked message at all. It sounds just as illegible forwards as it does backwards. Except you can hear a clear 'punching' sound effect and a short bassline as well. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – What Do They Know? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| XD I really like the video game interpretation. It makes a lot of sense. I don't know what the true meaning is, it might be much deeper, I believe MSI has a true poetic side in them in some of their songs, like Planet of the Apes. But I really like it. I bet there's some of that thought thrown in there. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – Backmask (With Backwards Text) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| In essence, I assume it's simply making of the controversy over subliminmal, possibly 'satanic' messages in songs. Their 'protesting' and joking with it a bit by making the backmasked messages good messages, to show subliminal messaging isn't worth dying over. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – Thank God Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I find this song oddly sad, just like I do with Planet Of The Apes. *shrugs.* Idk why. The sound of it doesn't settle very well with me. Not to mention this song was written in at least '98, possibly earlier. But yeah, it's pretty clear...just how Hip-hop/rap artists seem to not have much of a part in their own music and receive acclaim for it regardless. And of course all the stereotypes within the business. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – I'm Your Problem Now Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I'm being pretty blatant and obvious, but, parents have sex, the child becomes their attention? Never really thought about it's meaning until I looked it up on here, huh. Anyways, The meaning is clear. The child becomes so demanding of a parents attention for the rest of their life. | |
| Mindless Self Indulgence – Planet Of The Apes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Hah, who else finds the intro/main verse really sad? I mean in it's sound, not lyrics. It almost sounds sad, tragic. Like something terrible just happened. I always thought it might be coupled with something to do with the meaning of the song, but who knows. And who can explain the 'Yes, No! Do-do, do-do.' I suppose it could just be filler, but I suppose it has a reason. I agree with Kakitayuri the most, though. | |
| Reel Big Fish – Valerie Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yep. In the Cheer Up Title booklet it does have a "Val Garay" down as the producer and recorder for nearly all the tracks on the Album. | |
| Dave Matthews Band – Crash Into Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| As much as I am a believer that lyrics should be seen literally opposed to metaphorically, I dunno what to think of this song. It's got such a romantic feel, and it kinda ruins it for me knowing it's about a kid's wet dreams, pretty much. :P | |
| Pink – U + Ur Hand Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
In a nutshell, Pink is telling all the guys to stop hitting on her for once, she isn't there to please them. She wants to be a woman. The whole "U And UR Hand" part is basically implying that the man will have no one to get home with him, just him and his "hand" if you know what I mean. with such a provocative gist, i'm surprised it gets so much airplay. |
|
| Reel Big Fish – Boss DJ (Sublime cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think RBF did a better cover. Again: it's based on your taste. When RBF covers a song, it's usually a completely different song. It's good, i mean: why listen to a cover if it's the same exact song? RBF = More Upbeat, more ska Sublime = acoustic, emotional. its base don waht ya want |
|
| Reel Big Fish – Drunk Again Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
No one's saying emo songs are all slow songs. This song is emo-esque. It's got some aspect of sadness to it. Period. I knew Scott was capable of these vocals from the end of "The Set Up." He goes nuts. He's also got a naturally high voice, if you haven't noticed from shows or on the live album. Anyway, I think it's about how being drunk makes you a worse person, and isn't always about having fun sometimes. Being drunk opens up your emotions, which may explain the "..have a gift of reaching right into your soul, finding a hole, and making it bigger." in a nutshell, it's the horrors of what can be from being drunk. |
