just adding my 2 cents ... "port of call" is a reference to "portus cale", the etymology and ancient name of "Portugal", actually an old city in the north after which the country is now named ("Cale" - the Port of Cale as derived from Latin). Since there are always a lot of references to toponymies in Beirut's work, maybe the song was really made there ... ...cheers from Brazil! It'd be great to have a song named after any Brazilian place... perhaps Recife since the guys loved here =D |

There's just no f*cking hope, it doesn't matter how much you hold onto your infancy, you will lose what draws a line from your innocence once you reach the adulthood. And it may be a single moment when you suddenly realize you just don't care anymore about what just a second ago could make you so happy as a child... or it may be years later when you catch yourself lying to a kid exactly the way you hated so much being lied at. Life with all its expectations, cruelty, greed and all sh*t will come forth eventually and truly eat your heart out from your body while it still beats in hot blood. There's no other way around... it will happen at some point. Just like you as a grown up adult will start vomitting all those crappy lies onto another children, making them swallow empty promises of others being able to heal their pain, empty and false hopes of answers to their fears, luring them into a world of an illusory freedom... ... one can easily see how much everything out there wants you to grow up as fast as you can, all that marketing for children, high-tech games and toys for creating little consumers from the earliest age, or those freaky genius kids looking so adult on tv or cinema, 6, 7 years old people acting and speaking as adults, 10 years old girls in the streets wearing clothes, sometimes even sensual ones, as mini-adults who can't barely wait to be older and make hard mistakes for real, actually already feeling older for real... 11, 12 year old kids already knowing everything about sexuality.... ... money, needs, drugs, tribal identification, all that crap that adults keep telling them like where you to belong to. As if they really could tell! As if anyone could really tell such thing to another being. As if an age difference could make you able to do so! Like f*cked up parents brainswashing kids with all kind of religion craps, trying to explaing complex philopshical concepts of God... or the complete opposite, parents simplifying everything down to right and wrong, good and evil... It would be just great not having all that sort of basterds coming into our infancy door as soon as you do something wrong, scoring and cleaning your mess just to give you a sense of responsibility disguised in a forgiveness cloak to be planted in your heart just to steal you naivety. Then you get close to death... when you finally get tired beyond even being or simply feeling older... that's when you see how much you wronged other that are today what you were so long ago... that's when you finally open your eyes and want so hard to get yourself back there... and it crushes you, it makes your heart weigh so heavily, your chest shrinks so hard that you just need to shout out to the children not let it all repeat itself again... begging them to rejoice, to lift their voices, begging them to make themselves be heard for their real voices... imploring them to simply have fun... admitting to yourself and whispering to them that no adult can really protect a kid from the world... it is a lie that only reflects this sick desire adults have to wax and mold their kids into what is clearly an individual vision of the world that only apply to the self... and children are no f*cking third parts of other selves... nor a parent choice for they to correct their own mistakes... children are what they are... or at least they should be let be so... damned times these now when children are less children... and go killing and shooting and growing up before even being able to really miss being... children themselves... |

That's ridiculous... you guys arguing and getting all worked up about the pronunciation. I'm Brazilian and I read another Brazilian dude up there remarking it correctly. 1) It's actually pronounced "fay.tee.say.ra" with the stress on "say" and please note that the "ra" has the "r" like in "compadre". That's what linguists determine as "fricative r". In Brazilian Portuguese [x], [Ê] and [h] are realization variant of /r/. For forther references, I found a post which could actually help the ones struggling that much to pronouce it correctly: http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=1302738 2) There was indeed a character named "Feiticeira". Y'know, she was from one of all those stupid tv programs we've got here in Brazil where half-naked women incite you gringos to dream about a tropical harem. And she has absolutely nothing to do with the song. I don't know where the fuck do you guys take these ideas from. Chino just like the name. Wtf...! 3) "Feiticeira" and "Bruxa" are just the same. Yeah, they're synonyms you dumbasses - and both goes for "Witch". 4) As you all may well know, Chino's got his squire Max Cavalera really close to himself. Y'know Max from Sepultura. He is Brazilian. And just for being both latinos - at least in some part for Chino, eh?, that's just pretty ok using those names. Well, this song rules IMO, one of my favs just like street carp, rx queen, be quiet and drive, kimdracula... oh fuck, there are too many of "best songs" to cite and quote. And that's what really matters. |

Man... JJ got a lot of great songs... I listen to it once, twice and just can't take it off of my head anymore... But it's also great like some songs I just start paying attention to and then, suddenly, I'm not interest in the song itself at first but instead I'm thinking about the lyrics... and picturing a perfect frame for what it says... and later on I can't stop thinking about the melody and it fits so well, the mood is such a well part of it. I'm three days from getting my longboard ready. Never surfed before... I keep on driving listening to JJ, looking through the windows of the office behind a desk and a computer screen all day... a truly countdown before the day I get to the sea... it comes around with a fear of what this song says... Man... I think in such a different way from those explicited here by other people's point of view that I needed to post a comment in order to see if someone would agree with me :) I don't think the person in this song just keeps dreaming about the beloved one. To me, the guy really has/had her in his arms and there is/was a relationship. And then this song comes about noticing different self beings in someone who's elusive and someone who's awake... I keep thinking the lyrics are about the hard piece of mind necessary for loving someone who is elusive and utterly free. You know, sometimes we happen to love people who will never belong to us or anyone else. They're completely owned by themselves. And it also doesn't mean that they are solitary. On the other hand, sometimes we demand a kind of commitment that doesn't approve elusive ways of being. In a certain way, this song reminds of "your own girl" by Jacob Dylan, another great song although pretty different in the way the relationship happens. At last, he finally realizes it as someone who would say "my destiny lies in the hands that set me free". Dude, that's a strong line. Some people you just need to let go... and the good thing is that if they are by your side, after given to be free, it's because they really want to. They're there for you and for real. It's when she continues being elusive but comes a line like "You're finally real, there's nothing fake." He opens his eyes and he finds himself next to her. Coz he sets her free and willingly she rests her destiny on his hands. This could perfectly be either a "coming back" scene or a departure. Or a finally realizing moment that they're really together by the first time. |

its sexual connotation seems really clear to me... the water, the fellatio, then the sustained break... then the spout, etc. This can't be denied as Chino had previously a lot of similar lyrics content. Actually, about this album, like the other ones, many critics have appointed out this theme. Anyways, it's really important not to be deflected from the metaphore imbibed in the lyrics. That's when almost all the comments before could perfectly sound reasonable. Even the title as "Beware" strongly sounds as in a perspective put forth to distinguish Chino's intention from merely being slang-ishy and dirty... carelessly. It's a strong song, not male-chauvinist at all. The chorus is really sung by an adviser... and a worried one, I'd say. |

You guys are the best... although everyone got a particular point of view... the feeling it's just the same. Also a merit for the band, eh? One thing about this song that really gets me rapt is also what I love the most in grunge scenario... DUDE, It's basically 2 chords only! The whole music is solely a jam on those 2 chords... I take my guitar sometimes and just start jumping around, mixing chords and whatever and is really moving to see such an intensity from a pro band able to make great songs like that... almost childish!
