The Beatles have admitted over and over that this is about drugs (LSD). Why do people refuse to accept that and want to offer so many other meanings? And, John wrote most of it.

Led Zeppelin – Misty Mountain Hop Lyrics 14 years ago
I'll offer another interpretation. I see the LOTR references, but believe there is a lot of double meaning in this song. Ever been to Haight-Ashbury and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco? Hippie HIll? This was the focal point for the whole Hippie experiment and Summer of Love in '67. Even today, as you pass into Golden Gate Park from Haight street, you will be asked if you "want to score" more times than you can imagine -pot, hash, edibles, etc. You will eventually make your way to Hippie Hill where pot smoke (Misty Mountain) literally drifts up from the hill. Lots of homeless still hang out there (live there) and they are the ones usually peddling the smoke, etc. "Walking in the park, wanna score, people with flowers in their hair", etc, references to the hippies/homeless in the park trying to sell weed, acid, etc.

This guy gets there (or Plant) and he "really doesn't know what time it is." A reference to someone who just doesn't know where he's at in life, what to do. Ever hear someone say that someone else "doesn't know what time its is?" meaning he doesn't know what's going on. Now, he's at Hippie Hill, and decides he's just gonna stay. I mean, so many do, and just decide to stay in the park, peddle drugs and live homeless. So, this is what he decides to do. When he says "it had got very dark and I was really out of my mind", he's saying time has passed and he's kind of descended into his life/homelessness/madness. Lots of these people are mentally ill in the park. They're only going to get worse if they don't try to change their lives or help themselves, and it's just gonna happen. They aren't going to really notice getting more and more mentally ill. They weren't out of their minds because of drugs, but because they are getting more mentally ill (AND, yes, they are abusing drugs, too, making it worse.)

The policeman is a double reference, to me. The police are going to hassle the homeless/drug dealers, and always be a factor in their lives, and the police are also telling them to "get in line" with the rest of society. Stop being homeless, doing drugs, get a job, be like the rest of society.

When he says take a look at yourself/book on a shelf rustin', he's saying to himself (homeless/drug pushers) take a look at yourself, how you're livin - do you really like seeing yourself, sitting, wasting the day away, getting high, selling drugs, doing nothing, going madder?

"All just a state of mind" - I DO think many make a conscious choice to just stay and "take the easy way out." It's easy to live homeless in SF - decent weather, park to sleep in, a whole society of homeless people, weed to sell, to make money, panhandling on the street. The society supports homelessness, in a way. I think many come, find they can live and eat just fine this way and just decide to get lazy and do it. Lots of people come to San Francisco, looking for answers, believing in the myths from the 60's, get there, and "now what do I do?. And, they just give up and decide "not to fight it." Also, doing drugs - just a state of mind.

The hippies/homeless, really don't care where the pressure lies cause they have none. They sit, don't go to work, and get stoned everyday.

I think at the end of the song the guy (Plant or who he's singing about), decides to just stay homeless in Hippie Hill. Despite what he is saying about taking a look at yourself, do you like it - even HE is seduced by just hanging out, not working, getting high, etc.

Hippie HIll, somewhat represents the Misty Mountain. And, at Hippie HIll, there is a drum circle, everyday, where people get stoned, and dance (hop) to the music. And, maybe Misty Mountain also represents the mentality of these people. All kind of "misty" in there, due to drugs, homelessness, falling deeper into the life and illness cause they're doing drugs, sitting around all day, still eating and living and it's damn easy to do.

My interpretation....

John Prine – Illegal Smile Lyrics 15 years ago
Hilarious - those who think this ISN'T about grass or LSD. No reason to call his smile "illegal" if it's not. He's sayin' "won't you please tell the man I didn't hurt anyone" - why would he say that? Everybody who has ever smoked weed thinks the same thing - the stuff doesn't hurt anyone, so why the hell is it illegal?

He's got an "illegal smile" for a reason...

Tommy James And The Shondells – Crimson and Clover Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is mostly sexual. Not a "love" song at all. This guy is thinking what a zillion guys think when he sees a beautiful girl. I'd say "clover" is a little more sexual than most are thinking. And crimson, of course, represents blood. He sees a pretty girl and wants to f*ck her, over and over. He might be stoned too, cause your mind IS such a sweet thing when stoned, and you are typically very sexually aroused. A stoned guy, really turned on, who sees a beautiful girl and wants to do what most guys want to do in that situation.

Sweet – Little Willy Lyrics 16 years ago
I can definitely see sexual references, yeah to someone's "willy." Little willy could just be this stud who gets around, OR, yes, I mean this - it could be a metaphor for ALL guys who are going to be trying to get in every girl's pants. Mothers - you really can't do nothing - Little Willy's gonna get your daughter.

Ted Nugent – Stranglehold Lyrics 16 years ago
So many lyrics, so wrong, I don't know where to begin. Who put these here??? LOL.. Terrible.

"Tell it's me by the CLAMOR now, baby..."
"You better CRUSH your face..."
"You know I'm here to SAY..."
"YOU RAN the night that you left me..."
"You know you cant TURN me 'round..."

ETC.

Love this song - Ted's best, by far...and I love the length of the song...couldn't have it any shorter....awesome, awesome guitar.

The song's not as violent as people think. The guy's a rock star, and he's gonna do what he wants to do on the road and she can't stop him...meaning, he's gonna fuck whoever he wants when he wants. the road he cruises is a bitch, so he's gonna do what he wants to do. She thought she could leave him, and show him, and get him to change his act, but it didn't work. She can't "turn him around."

Now, he's got her in a "stranglehold", meaning her little attempt to put him in his place didn't work and he's in control of the relationship. Nobody got raped or beaten. He doesn't literally strangle her or crush her face.

Doesn't anybody realize a yellow submarine is a water bong? Listen to the music, and you will hear the actual bubbles/the sound of a water bong. Yes, it's about marijuana - sea of green. A submarine is very similar to a water bong.

Donovan – Sunshine Superman Lyrics 16 years ago
There's clearly reference to tripping on acid. That's what the first two lines are saying. "Sunshine" meaning liquid sunshine, what acid is sometimes called. Of course, in the next line, he say's "could've tripped out easy." No need to explain.

The Beatles – Yellow Submarine Lyrics 16 years ago
Occam's razor has nothing to do with this song.

Everybody whos says it is about POT, is right. Almost ALL of Revolver is about drugs. "Sea of Green", for those who smoke pot, refers to a sea/field of marijuana plants. Don't believe me? Look it up. why would they say, sea of green? If the sky is blue, the sea should be too. but, it's green.

Bob Dylan, the man who turned the Beatles on to pot (this is documented) is the "man who sailed the sea".

Notice the bubbling sounds in the song? Ever smoked through a bubbling water bong or pipe?

I am sorry people are so naive or so close-minded they don't want to believe the Beatles did LOTS and LOTS of drugs, and wrote about them.

Of course, though, they're going to deny the song is about drugs. If you wrote a "nice little children's song about drugs" would you admit it's about drugs? Of course not.

It's not deep and mysterious, at all. It is fun, though, how they disguised a song about pot as a children's song.

Sammy Hagar – Three Lock Box Lyrics 16 years ago
Ummm...I don't think Sammy is that deep or metaphysical.

If you think about it, especially coming from Sammy Hagar, there's a much more sexual meaning. I'm not saying Sammy might not be throwing in some metaphyscial references, but Sammy's never been that deep, overall. And he pretty much just puts together any combination of words in his lyrics, sometimes. I guess, what I'm saying, is that it never seems that important to Sammy to write too intelligent of lyrics.

3-lock box - pair of jeans with 3 buttons.
Button-fly jeans, anyone?
The box - do I have to explain?
Buried treasure's everywhere - yes, lots of women with "buried treasure" under their "3-lock" box that are, indeed, everywhere...

so, basically, a woman's you know what is the "three-lock" box...

Oh, and when she says "I'm special", "I've gotta have some of your attention", "No one like me", etc. I think she's saying that she can do the job as good as anybody - meaning, she can "please herself' as good as any man, etc.

The Pretenders – Brass In Pocket Lyrics 16 years ago
MzLizzy has it correct. Everyone is reading many, many things into this song. Brass in pocket does mean she's got money - think of putting your money in a brass money clip, for example. "Got bottle" means exactly what "liquid courage" means in the United States. "Detroit Leaning" is a way of driving with only the left hand on the steering wheel.
New "ne skank" - exactly - a type of dance and rhythm associated with ska (and, sometimes, weed). "So reet" - English slang for it's all right, it's good, righteous. It's so right..... but, I have to admit, I DO think it's a song about masturbation, or at least masturbation is a hidden meaning. The title of the song, I think, is actually a distraction to what she's singing about. Nothin she's doing has to do with having money- brass in pocket. The title just fools you. Many, many lines support the masturbation theory. she's "got motion, restrained emotion." Damn right, she's got motion, we know what she's doing, and no emotion is involved with this type of "love-making." She's "Detroit leaning", which means only one hand on the wheel - where's the other? "No reason, just seems so pleasin"... hmm..mmm...

"Got rhythm, I can't miss a beat"
"Got new ne skank, it's so reet"

Yea, she's got rhythm and a "new dance" and it's all right. As someone else pointed out. skank is a dance, among other things, involving swaying side to side...

"Gonna use my sidestep
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination"

mmmm....masturbation?

In the end, I do think this song is about masturbation, and, while Brass in pocked" does refer to having money, I think it's a hidden way to say she's masturbating. And, like someone else said, could very well be a way of saying she's got a vibrator....

Steely Dan – Aja Lyrics 16 years ago
Dantex - I think you're closest, but I think others have some points.

Overall, the song could have many references, pointing to many different things, but still be about one, overall concept. The song doesn't necessarily have to be about just one idea, but still, overall, I think is about one overal MAIN idea, with other references sprinkled in.

Nightvoice - people read a lot into the lyrics cause there usually is much to Steely Dan lyrics than the obvious. The group rarely was straightforward in its lyrics. To the naive, I'm not trying to be critical. Steely Dan had TONS of disguised drug lyrics and references in their songs.

Definitely about pot and LSD - the hill definitely San Francisco's Hippy Hill just like Dantex says, and I think AJA is an acronym for LSD, just don't know what the letters, in their minds, stand for. (Notice the clever reference to actual ASIAN culture, which makes sense in San Francisco, to hide the true meaning)

Damn right, up on the hill, they're gonna do some LSD. dime-dancin - a reference to a dime bag of pot and possibly to other drugs, as Dantex says. No more messing around with the little stuff or other stuff, no more messing around with the hardware needed for heroin - no more messing around with pot - still need hardware - bong, pipe, papers, etc.

Tonight we do it right - LSD.

Double Helix = Northern Lights, a very high strain of marijuana. also, like Dantex said, could be a double refernce to the trip their gonna take with LSD, but I definitely think a reference to marijuana, too. In fact, they could be saying, "right now we're doing some high quality marijuana - Northern Lights - okay, throw this out, let's do some LSD now.."

Love how Steely Dan rights a nice, slow, haunting piece that sounds like a song written for a woman, when it's actually about LSD.

Finally, again, I'm not saying this is the end-all, be-all. I'm sure lots of references that others have made may be in the song, but to me, anyway, LSD is the ultimate meaning. And, reading others' posts helped me to form this opinion, so thanks to all who added some insight for me. Anyway, just my take...

No shit, moto71. People, so badly, want this song to be want they want it to be, that they won't even consider it has drug meanings - pot and heroin.

The kid's last name just happens to be paper? PAPER?? Of all the names in the world, paper? The dragon's name is PUFF? The dragon is GREEN, of course. Because it's DISGUISED as a children's song, doesn't mean it is.

Oh yeah - the group says it's not about drugs, so, therefore, it must not be. No, they couldn't possibly be lying to cover up the meaning and their own asses, could they? NO ONE does that. Barry Bonds said he didn't do steroids. Well, if he said it, it must be true. Bill Clinton said he didn't have sexual relations with Monica L. Well, he said it, must be true. No chance that he's lying there....Who's the famous track star who denied using steroids for many years, and recently admitted it? hmmm... People lie.

Chasing the dragon is a term for doing heroin. Cherry Lane? - another connection to heroin when an addict removes the needle and the stuff turns red....???

In my opinion, a song that has many meanings. Sure, the child and loss of innocence is obviously there. So are lots of things.

The kid brought the dragon strings and sealing wax?

There's so many drug interpretations I don't want to even go into them all.

The Beatles – Good Day Sunshine Lyrics 16 years ago
starrysunshine - because it IS about drugs! No one is trying to make it so, it just is. The whole Revolver album is. Those more educated, who know about Revolver, especially, can tell you it is mostly about drugs. I'm not trying to be demeaning, here. Why are people so adamant to say it's NOT about drugs? Cause they want it to fit their perception, their world-view. They are innocent to the meaning, love the song, and don't want it to possibly be about drugs since they've always assigned more fun, happy, innocent meanings. I understand that. But, it IS about LSD. All of the Beatles had been experimenting at that time - first with pot, then on to heavier things. I am sorry, but most of Revolver is devoted to drugs. And, I don't want it to be about drugs - when I was in college, I really liked this song, having no idea what it was about. As I learned more about the Beatles and their music I learned just how not-so-innocent many of their happy, fun songs were. Think about this - the Beatles just couldn't come out and openly write about drugs, just like most artists. You have to be cryptic and disguise the meaning to get away with it, especially in 1966. "Rock Around the Clock" is not about dancing!

Yea - this song has nothing to do with a woman, or slut, or whatever. Because Pauls uses a metaphor doesn't mean it's literal. She's a big teaser - gosh must be about a woman...or maybe it's a metaphor...

Paul was the last to try acid in the group - "it took me so long to find out, and I found out..."

The Beatles – Good Day Sunshine Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is DEFINITELY about LSD.

No, every song from the Beatles is not about drugs, but this one is. It comes off of Revolver, an album devoted almost entirely to drugs. Liquid sunshine, orange sunshine, are names for LSD. It's funny - when people don't understand something, they rush to put other people down cause they want everything to fit their own world-view. Like "Gee, this can't be about drugs!!!!"

Most of "Revolver" is about drugs:

Doctor Robert (Drug dealer/supplier)
Good Day Sunshine (Acid)
Got to Get You Into my Life (Pot)
Tomorrow Never Knows (Acid)

etc.

Or, should Paul have just said "I'm doing acid and it feels great?" No, the Beatles sure as hell couldn't just come out and say it. That's not to say that he very well could be outside on a beautiful, sunshiny day, and especially happy cause he's trippin...

Steely Dan – Rikki Don't Lose That Number Lyrics 16 years ago
Naw, there's always double meaning to a Dan song.

Because Fagen says it's a straight-forward love song, doesn't make it so. People, dont' be so naive. You think Becker or Fagen is always being honest with you? President Clinton said he didn't have sexual relatons with Monica L, but he obviously did. People LIE.

Rickie Lee Jones - not Rikki Lee Jones. Her name is spelled, "Rickie." If it's about her, they mispelled her name.

There's obvious references to Clapton and Derringer.

I'd say there's lots of references mixed in this song - it doesn't necessarily have to be black and white, about one thing. They could have interspersed many different ideas into the song, you know, how someone writes, say, a book, and takes many different things from their lives and puts them into one composite incidence or character, etc?

And, of course, "Number" is another term for a joint...

Steely Dan – Bad Sneakers Lyrics 16 years ago
I've never quite understood what the term, "bad sneakers" means, but this song, again, has many drug references in it. Like many Dan songs, I think this is being sung from a first-person perspective. The guy may or may not be in rehab, or something like that. Or, is he in some kind of psychiatric insitution? Frozen rain, in this song, is probably a cocaine reference. "Five names that I can hardly stand to hear...etc." Maybe a reference to the group of people he has to sit with during his rehab sessions, or something like that. Maybe it's the nurses who are talking about that "fearsome excavation." He's tired of the whole thing, of the people he's surrounded by, delving into his own problems, Maybe he feels like a chimp, being experimented on?

The guy "tearin up the street" is either the narrator who uses cocaine or his dealer. "You wear that white tuxedo" - a reference to cocaine on the face, by the nose, etc. "How you gonna beat the heat" - a reference to not being caught by the police. "That ditch out in the valley....etc." - a reference to the fact that if he keeps doing cocaine, he's gonna end up dead.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of that applies, just not sure how it all goes together...would love other insights.

Steely Dan – Everyone's Gone to the Movies Lyrics 16 years ago
There's a couple of other references in the song, I believe. When he says "I know you're used to 16 or more, sorry we only have 8", there might be some double intendre there, not just the literal size of the film, but to 8 year-olds versus 16 year-olds. In many states, 16 is legal age, although not necessarily an adult. A hidden reference to liking little kiddies?

Also, LaPage is the name of an old model airplane glue or something like that, that kids used to sniff. A double reference to a dirty old man and the glue he's sniffin with the kids...
