If you reread these lyrics bearing in mind cliffs alledged insatiable drug taking this song takes on a whole new meaning.Just think: "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers, and you will instantly see what I mean: "we're going where the sun shines brightly we're going where the sea is blue we've all seen it on the movies now let's see if it's true" etc. = HEROIN? |

| Peter Gabriel – Solsbury Hill Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I have always considered these lyrics to this song to be totally about drugs. Take the opening line: "Climbing up on Solsbury Hill" is well known 70s slang for doing a Pill... "Wind was blowing, time stood still Eagle flew out of the night" he is obviously experiencing the LSD,and the Eagle is an halucination representing the opening of The Doors of Perception. "I did not believe the information Just had to trust imagination My heart going boom-boom-boom Son, he said, grab your things I've come to take you home,Eh, don't quit" This is a feeling of guilt of the user visualising the person closest to him causing his heartrate to increase. "To keep in silence I resigned My friends would think I was a nut Turning water into wine Open doors would soon be shut" more feelings of guilt, halucinations of water into wine representing changed perceptions eg wine = blood and the doors would be shut as in the " Doors of Perception" closing as his trip is ending. "Today I don't need a replacement I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant My heart going boom-boom-boom Hey, I said, you can keep my things They've come to take me home" The final lines obviously represent him taking too many drugs and feeling that he may be taken away into care and not needing any material things. The transition from leaving Genesis to his solo career was obviously a need to let his hair down and free himself from the constaints of popular music. |
