David Byrne – Miss America Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not sure it's that patriotic. Basically, as I see it, the song mocks America while it acknowledges that Byrne himself also a part of and a product of American culture. The song doesn't condemn or condone the US, so much as it provides a critique of our country and how much DB is a part of it. Also, the music video is hilarious (love DB in the Adidas sweatsuit)

Mike Doughty – I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep on Dancing Lyrics 15 years ago
I felt the same way about the last two albums, until I saw him play live again with the band a last night. The show was amazing, and I finally felt like I understood why he is going in the direction he is. Sometimes the lyrics to his newer stuff seem somewhat contrived, but on the whole it's still geniune and often really good, and his compositions now are better fleshed-out and more mature than the skittish/rockity stuff, IMO. A true poet.

The Tragically Hip – Ahead By A Century Lyrics 16 years ago
Dudes, this song is about weed, man. "Tonight we smoke them out" it's about smoking pot and chillin out and stuff. sweet song.

Soul Coughing – 4 Out Of 5 Lyrics 16 years ago
Hmm, i hadn't thought of it that way, Doyle, but that does make some sense. The words "greater than" also lend creedence to that theory. And the last line, "You crowd me out", could be that that is a song about rejection and not about sex.

The Samples – Did You Ever Look So Nice? Lyrics 16 years ago
I just saw these guys at a tiny festival, and about 20 of us were there. When this song started a bunch of us got up and danced. Love it

Brother Ali – Uncle Sam Goddamn Lyrics 16 years ago
great song...Love the beginning once the bass kicks in. Wonderfully direct lyrics and a great vocal intonation.

The missing word from above is
"The Cold Continent latch key child
Ran away one day and started acting foul"

They Might Be Giants – Kiss Me, Son Of God Lyrics 17 years ago
I really don't think this song is about religion. It seems to me to be more about a person in power either in a totalitarian or facist government, or possibly a corporation. The "son of god"reference is simply to show the ego and narcissism of the subject.

Steely Dan – Here At The Western World Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics "lately he spends his time here" suggests that this song isn't about the "Lido" anyway. It takes place in a place of prostitution, this is fairly obvious. However, there are some themes that are a bit more vague, but I'll take the first stab here. First off, the mayor and all his friends are here, but no one cares. No one questions the morality of the mayor of being in such a place. The part where it gets deep is the line "In the night you hide from the madman you're longin' to be. But it all comes out on the inside eventually." I believe it is a reference to the fact that many men don't like to face their more perverse sexual desires, but they will make themselves clear to yourself regardless. And you will be powerless of it. Not really suprising that this song doesn't have a whole lot of comments.... great song though.

Steely Dan – Brain Tap Shuffle Lyrics 17 years ago
A great pre-Dan song about ecstatic dance, and it's psychological healing powers. The Bard education comes through in this song. A rejection of Western thinking. "If making money doesn't soothe your mind, we've got something here, here for you."

Steely Dan – My Rival Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my favorite Dan songs. Puts forth such a perfect Film Noir vibe. Amazing horns. Lyrics possibly about finding the man who stole his lover, but that seems a bit oversimplified. Not sure what the hearing aid bit is getting at...

Cake – Tougher Than It Is Lyrics 17 years ago
Like most of you I think this song is about contentment. However, to clarify it a bit more I think he is trying to say in the first verse that you are not defined by what you own or what you are. He is saying people put to much into trying to define themselves through their job, their car, sports, money, and not on just enjoying things for what they are. And then, in return for their struggles they are never happy, they just want more. Thus, "Well, the more you try to shave the cat, The more the thing will bite and scratch." And so the more time you spend trying to make you life more enjoyable, the less time you spend actually enjoying life. Great song, probably my favorite on Pressure Chief.

Steely Dan – Glamour Profession Lyrics 17 years ago
oh, i LOVE this song. It's wonderfully written, and it's got a perfect "high roller" vibe to it. It's about being a dealer in Hollywood, and the narrator feels as though he's one of the stars. Perfect character names, and I love the narcissistic view through his eyes: "Who inspires your fabled fools? Thats MY claim to fame"

Illegal fun under the sun, boys.

They Might Be Giants – They'll Need A Crane Lyrics 17 years ago
I completely agree with LostMonster. My favorite part of the song is the bridge in first person:

".....There's a restraunt we should check out where the other nightmare people like to go, I mean nice people, baby wait, I didn't mean to say 'nightmare'.."

Great song.
