My Bloody Valentine – No More Sorry Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's about incest with a sibling ("don't tell daddy"). Like squaresun said, this is a great song but it makes me nauseous.

The Dead Milkmen – Big Lizard Lyrics 16 years ago
This sounds almost like a protest song...

"I ran downstairs to find an army man
He said 'We gotta blow up those things we don't understand!'"

The government and other groups act violently because of their ignorance. The big lizard could represent just about anything that the public would go in a panic about, like when black people were protesting for their civil rights. Did the police stop to think of what they were doing? Hell naw dawg, they hosed the protestors down and sprayed the crap out of them with tear gas. They didn't even bother trying to comprehend other's pains. It could also relate to specific individuals, like people who stick out and are hassled because of it (the stereotypical jock vs. nerds thing.)

The Dead Milkmen can right something really catchy and funny but they can be smart. Like, "Surfin Cow"? That song is the truest, best song ever written and has more emotion than national anthems.

The Cure – Close to Me Lyrics 16 years ago
I like to think this song is about sex, but I know it's not. It's still a hot thought and I will continue to think it and all, but I think this song is entirely anti-sex. There's a girl who likes him but he doesn't like her back. She tries to kiss him, touch him, but it just makes him claustrophobic. She's too close! That's what I've thought since sixth grade.

Anyway. Whenever I listen to this song it reminds me way too clearly of puberty and listening to it after school under a fort made of bedsheet covers. I was going through a very awkward stage and Robert Smith's voice makes it sound like he was, too. We were lonely but together.

TV on the Radio – Wolf Like Me Lyrics 17 years ago
"just ate my baby" LOL WTF LOL.

I think a shady fellow (the werewolf!) is showing a virginal girl, a Little Red Riding Hood type, that there's plenty o' pleasure in being bad. He's trying to convince her that deep down she's a wolf, too, which I so get! We, people, pretend to be so civilized and wear suits and ties and glasses to make ourselves different from lions, who spend all their days rolling around with each other and killing their enemies in a way that to us is not dignified of a human, but sometimes our caveman selves escape us, like the fight or flight instinct coded into our DNA that does not succumb to our "modern" selves. No matter how sweet Little Red Riding Hood appears, she's transparent to the Wolf, who sees she's "a hideous thing inside." I think that when the song reaches "dream me, oh dreamer" and it gets all slow and dazed, that's when they're both giving in to their animal selves, and probably having hot wolf sex. I mean, "open my hands and let them weave onto yours"? They're holding hands. He's awakening her with her own animal truth, she's becoming poisoned by the werewolf's bite, and they both are slaves to the full moon and nature. "Show you what all that howlin' is for" = lolz, she's howling... get it!? And, also, I think "the bite that binds the gift that gives" is pretty cool-sounding grammar-wise. THE bite THAT binds THE gift THAT gives.

Gah, what a great song.

The Replacements – Customer Lyrics 17 years ago
YESSSSSSS. The meaning's pretty straightforward, I think, but still, when I was in middle school I'd walk by a boy I liked on purpose or make up excuses to talk to him, kind of like this. Actually, one time I DID tell him I loved him, just like in the song. Ah, embarrassing. But very relatable!

Pixies – Vamos Lyrics 17 years ago
Being Hispanic! at the Disco and 900% fluent in Spanish, the beginning of the song is a little Babelfishish translation here. It goes "Estaba pensando sobre viviendo con mi sister en New Jersey. Ella me dijo que es una vida bien buena alla, bien rica, bien chevere. Y me voy! Puñeta cabrona!" which means "I was thinking about living with my sister in New Jersey. She told me life is really good there" the next bit "bien rica" can be translated to "really rich" or "really tasty" Like when someone says, "este camaron esta muuuuuy rico" it means "this shrimp is reeeeaaallly tasty" Righty-ho. Anyway. "Bien chevere" is kind of funny because, at least in Mexico, "chevere" is a sort of dorky, quaint way to say "cool" like, "it's really groovy ova thurr in New Jersey" or, "things sure are dandy/kickin'/spiffy/neat-o in NJ" I'm not really sure if this is true for South American countries, it's probably more popular there, but I know in Mexico it was more said in the 70's and now it's an old-timey folk word. Whatevz. "Y me voy!" means "So I go!" and "Puñeta cabrona!" means "Weak bitch!" more or less. I don't know who he's screaming this to? Maybe his sister? Maybe life actually really sucked in New Jersey and that bitch lied to him and it's more like a call of, "So I go! [bad things happen, regrets moving] What a bitch! What a joke!" The song all seems like what hopeful immigrants (like my parents) all think the U.S. is like from what they hear in their countries. They wish for American Dream white picket fences, hot wives, plenty of food, all while keeping tranditions and culture, It is not like that in many cases. It sounds a lot like his idea of what moving would be like ended up clashing with the reality, like maybe he met some crazy Americans ("I keep getting friends, looking like lesbians") instead. "That maid Maria, yeah, she's really OK" kind of makes me think of an American tourist in a hotel, maybe. Maybe Maria, the maid, had drugs or sumfin. I don't know. Maybe I'm really wrong.

Fugazi – Do You Like Me Lyrics 17 years ago
The schoolboy theory sounds about right to me, but I think there's a problem in how the lyrics are displayed, all paragraph-y. I think he asks her, "Do you like me?" and she says, "I guess" and it's like waah-waah-waaaaaah things were not as heated and passionate as I played them out to be in my mind. The middle part also needs to be more spaced out in lines to be clear. As he's frustrated and pubertytastic rednecks and soccer moms petition for more prisons. In Bethesda, an office is on fire. A church youth group is singing, maybe holding hands in a circle with their eyes closed. Firemen are calling in "Lockheed! Lockheed! Martin Marietta!" which may be a specific model they want, since I remember Amelia Earhart flew a Lockheed Electra airplane. Just scenes of random "Meanwhile..."s It would be groovy to see it in a film format. But yeah. Man, I like this song.
