The Tower of Song I think represents his duty, his calling as a songwriter - he describes himself being imprisoned inside this Tower of Song like many before him (Hank Williams 100 floors above him) He describes jis life in the Tower of Song as lonely but it's where he belongs and it's his life. The golden voice line is kind of ironic - Cohen's actual voice i wouldnt describe as golden but being born with a golden voice and being tied to the table by the angels in the Tower of Song is like him finding this release and necessity in writing songs. |

Is it about Cohen's guilt about some kind of personal artistic impurity or a criticism of another singer with a 'lie in his voice'? He thanks the 'Keepers of truth' for doing their duty, singers whose words are pure and truthful and honest, unlike his own song that is wrong and 'smudges the air'. Im not sure but how I interpret the last two verses is the character with the lie in is voice is only more confused by all the ladies he shags, he must go begging 'in beauty's disguise' at the hinge of her thighs - a great metaphor for a vagina! |

So its about feeling inadequate right? And feeling trapped in the relationship and therefore feeling guilty and the longing for it all to be right just making him want to hide.. Indentured servant forever in his place - He doesnt want to end up like the other 'soulful convicts' 'forever interred' But at the same time its almost like he wants to resign himself in this way - 'I wish i built a cabinet of shiny bolts and wood, secret draws and hiding places sculpted out of wood' But he cant, so it is that he beseeches her 'To please turn me away'.. Well this is how I read it anyway.. I just think the line 'Crouched beneath your dress i come, Shooting little spurts' sums the song up in such a great way, fucking awesome song.. |
