| Porcupine Tree – Heartattack in a Lay By Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Am I the only one who thought of the idea that the relationship is actually a relationship with life. The person is travelling a road (A commonly used metaphor) and decides to go into a layby, he gets a depression. He doesn't know what to do and contemplates suicide (falling asleep) but comes to the conclusion that he just has to learn to live and continue the road. It might be a bit of an errant but it was one of the first things that popped into my mind when first hearing the song. |

| Bruce Dickinson – Trumpets Of Jericho Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I have to disagree with you josepherdon. This song is about failure, a thing many Alchemists have encountered. It's about the procedure's they are going through, but how they never reach their ultimate goal; at the trumpets of Jericho still the walls remain... | |
| Iron Maiden – Remember Tomorrow Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I haven't heard the cover by Opeth but I'm almost sure that it won't beat the original for me. Paul has always been in Bruce's shadow, but songs like this are just songs Paul should sing. Bruce can sing it well enough, but knowing what the song means the original stays the best. |

| Iron Maiden – Hallowed Be Thy Name Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I do believe that the person being executed had done nothing wrong. The line "Though the end is near I'm not sorry" could be referring to the person doubting his God, this would clear up why he doesn't comprehend the reason he has to die. In the end he once again embraces his religion and calls out to become one with his God. | |
| Symphony X – The Odyssey Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I'd like to clear up something about the Cyclops, Polyfemos. Homer in the Odyssey never said he had one eye, but kept calling him cyclops. This is a word coming from two Ancient Greek words meaning "round" and "sight", so it's said Polyfemos has one eye because Odysseus blinded him with one blow. Then about what Odysseus said to Polyfemos. Polyfemos asked Odysseus for his name, which he said was "ouden" (Not exactly, it's of course written in the Greek alphabet). If you translate that word it means litterally "nobody", so it was a plan he has set up for the Eye. Then about Circe. Circe or Kirke was a witch who got all the men in her home and turned them into pigs. When Odysseus wanted to go in Hermes warned him and gave him a special herb so he wouldn't be casted into Circe's spell. When Odysseus went to Circe's home and drank from the golden chalice nothing happened and Odysseus stayed unharmed from Circe's spell. Today the Circe's story has another theory. Some people believe Circe was a prostitue who turned all the men who were under her "spell" into "pigs". Odysseus was aware and made sure he wouldn't give in. |

| Rush – The Analog Kid Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is about, as has been said, a boy who falls in love. It's not that hard to get when you know it, but I can understand some people might not come up with it because of Peart's formulation. The best thing about this song is the lyrical co-operation with Digital Man. An analog signal is a signal that is written as it is recorded, without having anything encrypted. A digital signal is an encrypted signal that needs to be decoded, a digital signal only gives a positive or a negative signal, a 0 or a 1. This is something that shines through in the songs. The Analog Kid is about a boy who is overwhelmed with straight-forward emotion. Digital Man is about a heartless, calculating man. My guess would be this is where the album title comes from. I can't say for sure though, as I don't know much Rush history. |

| Queensrÿche – Empire Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Mike, it seems you're missing a few points. It says the total money invested in law enforcement by the federal government, but also the state governments and the local governmentsis 60,6 million dollars. It is possible that the federal government spent 43 times more money on national defense and space exploration in 1986-1987. About the amount of money being reasonable, that's what you might think. At that time the Cold War was still going and it seems the USA was itself's biggest enemy at the time. They invested more in space exploration, mostly to impress the Sovjet-Union, national defense and international relations. Things were getting out of hand but nothing happened. Now you tell me what the USA actually got from all those millions invested in things such as national defense and space exploration. |

| Bruce Dickinson – The Alchemist Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Otm, I have to disagree with you. This song is not that obviously about Alchemy and an Alchemist's perspective on life. "Wash away the blackness with the silver rain" represents the forging of the Philosopher's Stone, many Alchemists believed it was made from lead using quicksilver. "Don't turn away" stands for the tension of the moment, it could reveal a hit but it always failed. "Sulphurous and burning, spitting out the sun, The beginning of Creation, of the Golden One." The sun in Alchemy stands for gold, because Alchemists were heretics they had to stay underground and keep everything as secret as possible. This bit tells the beginning of forging the Philosopher's Stone, a stone that can give eternal life, or can project anything into gold. "A window to the west, a blazing star above, In Taurus we begin it, and the ladder has begun." The west stands for death and once again the sun is mentioned, it's a bit of cryptic information about the stone. Taurus is a Alchemical process that could be used as a way to try and make the stone. The Chorus is now pretty clear. The Alchemist didn't care about the Catholic way of Christianity and wants to be left alone, not prosecuted for trying to do the right thing. "Four-headed dragon for the four degrees of fire Purify the insane, bring the solution ever higher " I don't know what this exactly means, it is probably about the religious side of Alchemy. In Alchemy, the four is a holy number I guess. "Bring me all the elements, spread them round my head Bring me mad men's bodies, I will break them all like bread " Here he talks about the "four" western elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind. I guess this symbolises the insanity that comes forth from giving your life for something but never really getting anything out of it. "Don't try and blame me for your games Your games are death My world is light - the angels fill my eyes With every breath..." The last chorus to me is the climax of the song. It clearly accuses the Catholic Church for keeping everything in it's grip and puts the well-meaning individual above everything. I can't really explain the last part of the song, anyone has fitting suggestions? |
