i think that this song is about someone liking someone (once again), and the person rejects them, and that rejection has probably happened so many times in a row. And then they finally meet someone who's willing to accept them, but they don't want to get hurt again. They'd rather feel the pain.
And that person who likes the rejected person is saying that they'll always be there, to save them from being lonely.
