Damien Rice – Grey Room Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the suggestion above that he is still crying out to the one he loves, letting her know that he is still there for her. What is uplifting about this song is his realization that no matter how depressed and lost he feels, he still has within him all the qualities and strengths that made her fall for him. He can still make things so much better for her if she will only let him do so, which in turn would of course make things infinitle less grey for him as well.

Dashboard Confessional – The Secret's In The Telling Lyrics 18 years ago
When love is forbidden but is acted upon nonetheless, it is natural to wonder at some point whether it derives its intensity from its forbidden nature. With that issue in mind, one may conclude that the love is somehow artificial. In my instance, all I can say is that I wanted what was "forbidden" to be out in the open. I wanted us to have so much more than stolen moments. I wanted us to have everything.

This song illustrates well the hidden thoughts and desires that take up permanent residence within us when we are not with someone with whom we yearn to be.

Evanescence – Anywhere Lyrics 18 years ago
Too often, we dismiss what is so strong and persistent in our minds and hearts as fantasy. We try to convince ourselves either that what we want cannot really happen, or thatwe do not really want it to happen. The strength and persistence of our yearnings derives from their reality -- they are so real within us, and, so long as those for whom we yearn are still among the living, what we long for is possible. What was lost could be regained. Somewhere and Anywhere are so much better than going nowhere.

Lenny Kravitz – Again Lyrics 18 years ago
Not a complex song, but the feelings it evokes are. What happens when you wait your whole life for someone who has all sorts of qualities that you were not sure could ever exist in the same person, then that person comes into your life, becomes a huge part of your life, and then is gone, leaving so much pain in her wake? You knew that there were flaws associated with the amazing attributes, but it is impossible to forget the attributes and resign yourself to never experiencing again everything good about the one for whom you yearn. That is especially the case when you know that together you not only could, but would, win anything worth winning.

Pearl Jam – Thumbing My Way Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics printed above are incorrek, but the most important ones are accurate. This is about trying to get back to the heaven of a lost love's company, never knowing if you can get there again, but knowing that you need to try.

To simply lock inside you what you feel, hoping that it will go away, is not an option. Nor does it do justice even to the memory of the one of whom you so recurringly think. You can never be free that way; you smile sometimes, but who are you kidding? Sometimes in our haste to be "true" and "honest," all we end up doing is lying to ourselves, and living a lie. Maybe it is because we foresaw the temporary "rust" of problems that would be encountered if we were to opt for the path urged by our hearts, and found it easier to choose the "shiny" facade of something outwardly more stable-looking -- but devoid of substance in reality.

The song also illustrates so well the emptiness, aimlessness, and regret that take such strong hold in the aftermath of a loved one's departure. "I wish I could hold you, I wish that I had" kills me. It is not that you never held her, it is that perhaps if you had held on more forcefully, you would not now feel like a hitcher scruggling to get where you need to be.

Damien Rice – Delicate Lyrics 19 years ago
He loves her more than anything in the world -- heart-breakingly so, and against all self-interest. Though it may well be true that he loves her more than she loves him, he knows very well that she loves him very much. The delicateness of the circumstances in which they found each other leads her to try to deny it to herself, and to try to make him feel that it was not real to her, something that should be forgotten (as if it ever could be). It is as if he needs to reassure her, or remind her, that what they share -- what they feel for each other , and what they make each other feel when they are together -- is truly delicate in the best sense of that word ("the look on your face is delicate"). He has seen her when they are together; he knows how happy he makes her, how deeply he touches her. He longs for a chance to keep doing so.
