They mentioned in an interview somehwere that Gullinkambi is the Ringleader. Nonus the Hobo is just the second part of this song.

I'm surprised this has no comments, probably my favorite RoK song. I always get a sense of intrigue and adventure from this song, as it seems to be about pushing limits and facing the unknown or dangerous. Probably mostly metaphor, but I love the imagery they use in the lyrics, things like the fraying rope bridge and 'daggers and flames' really add to the mood.

O_o

Prophetic, indeed... there's really no other way to take that. Maybe it was just a lucky guess, seeing how George W. was always into politics in one form or another, as well as his brother Jeb. But still... creepy.

Porcupine Tree – Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled Lyrics 14 years ago
In one of the live recordings of this song, Steven sings "You can dream and drowse while I look down your blouse". This caught me off guard at first, but the more I thought about it the more it seemed to fit. :P

This is a good'un, this'un.

Porcupine Tree – Meantime Lyrics 14 years ago
The vibe that I personally get from it is one of a person who sees only the bad things happening in the world, dwells on war and death happening to innocent people, and has a very dark and cynical view of things. So, and this would be the chorus, he instead chooses to shun the dispassionate world and stay inside, distracting himself with television or video games, and leads a life devoid of meaning or purpose. Depressing, but I guess that's nothing new to PT. :/

Porcupine Tree – A Smart Kid Lyrics 14 years ago
For me, many Porcupine Tree albums seem to be very musically cohesive experiences that tell a story, and they usually seem to build to a climax near the end of the record. For Stupid Dream, I always felt it was the guitar solo at the end of this song. But that's just me. >_>

Seal – Future Love Paradise Lyrics 14 years ago
Well if you listen to it, you can hear that he says (in the 'doing drugs' verse) 'Blue Riders'. So I'm pretty sure the 'riders' he's talking about are cops, and seeing how this song has pretty heavy racism overtones, I think the chorus is generally about cops discriminating against black people... though I feel the meaning of the song overall is more along the lines of a vision of the world without prejudice. It's a nice song. :)

Porcupine Tree – The Blind House Lyrics 14 years ago
Steven Wilson said the inspiration for this song came from a raid of a fundamentalist church in Texas.

There's a wiki entry about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YFZ_Ranch_raid#April_2008_raid

And you can hear Wilson talk about it in this video: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.co.uk/page/News?news_id=81666

Loving this track, by the way. :)

Porcupine Tree – Pure Narcotic Lyrics 15 years ago
Interpret it as you will, but it's an unrequited love song, SW said so himself. This song, "Slave Called Shiver", and "Don't Hate Me" are sort of a series in that they describe the different stages of one person's feelings for another. At first, it's very romantic and hopeful, and this person is trying to change themselves so they can better fit the other's expectations. Once their love is still not returned, then things start getting violent and perverse(Slave Called Shiver), then just depressing(Don't Hate Me).

Steven Wilson – Insurgentes Lyrics 15 years ago
God this song is beautiful. What a great way to end the album.

I always find Steven's melancholic ballads like this to be the best of his work. So simple, yet it conveys so much emotion. Love the koto, too.

Brilliant.

I would say that PT has its share of upbeat songs, though. I actually find some of their happier songs to be among my favorites, for example Nine Cats, Lightbulb Sun and The Rest Will Flow. Though it's true they haven't really done any lately.

Porcupine Tree – Buying New Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
No, you might be right, at least as far as what the song's about. "Hymn to those that disappear" seems like Steven's talking about those bands that don't sell out, and pay the price by constantly having to struggle (or fade away) for their choice. Now whether or not they left it off the album to prove a point, I don't know.

Nevertheless, another beautiful song. They have so many.

Porcupine Tree – Wake As Gun Lyrics 15 years ago
One thing I realized recently is that this song is a complement to "Pure Narcotic". It even has the same guitar music, changed slightly to make it sound darker. And it shares a few lyrics with that song as well. It's strange when you compare them, because Pure Narcotic is such an upbeat song.

Blind Melon – Cheetum Street Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my personal favorite off the album. The wistful guitar and piano and emotional lyrics, with elements like female backup vocals a la Mouthful of Cavities, make this a very emotional and satisfying way to end the record.

As far as what it means, it's obviously about when someone, maybe Travis, was younger and about to meet somebody very important for the first time(perhaps an estranged family member?) but it sounds like he got ditched. He still wants to make things right with this person it seems, though beyond that it's kind of vague.

Oh, and one more thing, I'm pretty sure the song is referencing the Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, Texas, which is a popular live music venue.

Porcupine Tree – Fadeaway Lyrics 16 years ago
I have to agree, this song is definitely in my PT top five. The version with the new drum track just adds so much depth to the song, and for being so early in Wilson's career it's really amazing. The electric guitar at the beginning and the end is just awesome.

I agree with ptree on the idea of the song being from the perspective of an old man looking back on his youth, that's what it's always kinda reminded me of. Also, I think the idea of "hit heaven far too high" meaning he died of an overdose is interesting, I never really thought about it that way.

Porcupine Tree – Out Lyrics 16 years ago
So I'm not sure if the lyrics in that second verse are correct. As a matter of fact, I'm quite sure they aren't. But there aren't any official lyrics for this song, soooo....

In case anyone's wondering, this is a song that dates back even before On The Sunday of Life, on a set of promo tapes Wilson released called "The Love, Death, and Mussolini". (I believe it's also available on Yellow Hedgegrow Dreamscape, though) It's a really interesting song, actually, with some pretty cool guitar riffs and such, and it's followed by "It Will Rain for a Million Years", which is actually a different track entirely than the one on OTSOL by the same name. Not a very important song per se, but I mainly posted this for the purpose of having all their songs on the site anyway. If you're interested, though, you can download it here:

Well, I can hear parts that I know are different than these lyrics... I can't make out too much, but this is what I got.

---

You're looking at your ???, sting like a bee now
Rollercoaster up in the air
You wanna pop a bubble but you know it's only trouble
'cuz you think that noone better would care
Wham, bam, it's a scam, no demand, we got plans
We got nothin' better to say
So we make our only choices that reminded you of voices
Sayin' that nothin's really better today

I wanna hide, wanna be unknown
And if I can't decide I get it on my own

Singin' like a leaf you know the reason ???
Sacrifices that'll live in your skin
You're steady and you're ??? when you started seein' double
And you never know the places you been
Can't sit, take a hit, we got tipped, I got ???
A substance that is better than air
We couldn't tell apart and it almost broke my heart
The situation, well it just wasn't fair

You can never do anything that's never been done before
You can try a different style ??? that said it before
Wasted

??? (No idea here)
We got nothin' better all day
Stand out in the yard and you would kinda look retarded
Get a feeling, go away

I wanna hide, wanna be unknown
And if I can't decide I get it on my own

Tired on my own you know they like a resistance
Even though ???
She got within my car and then she leaves me at the bar
And makes me cry and ??? the other way

Wham, bam, it's a scam, no demand, we got plans
We got nothin' better to say
So we make our only choices, make our minds and make our voices
Changin', nothin's really different today

You can never do anything that's never been done before
You can try a different style but you always end up on the floor

Wasted

---

As far as the meaning goes, from what I can gather it may be about the whole rockstar lifestyle, what with all the drug references and maybe being scammed by executives and stuff, but also (as implied by the chorus) about the fact that nobody can ever truly be original in the music business, as there are set genres and standards about what makes a song "good" and there always have been, and if you don't adhere to those standards by trying something that's "new and different" you'll probably fail miserably. I think it's a statement about the fact that he doesn't give a **** what other people think and he'll make the music he wants, even if it means sacrificing popularity (I wanna hide, wanna be unknown And if I can't decide I get it on my own).

I dunno, maybe I'm overanalyzing. Maybe it doesn't really mean anything. O_o

Porcupine Tree – Lightbulb Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know, it certainly seems more like nostalgia to me. Lines like "Mother makes sure that I'm watered and fed" and "My best friend from school" Obviously implies that it's a kid, and the lighthearted feel of the song sort of radiates "The good ol' days". I think it's a nostalgic song, and SW just chose to sing about being sick because it's a good example of how everyone else would take care of you as a kid, and you never had to worry about yourself, and missing school was kind of like a "little retreat" whereas when you grow up, you can't just skip school or work or whatever without consequences.

This is my favorite song from the band's early years. I just love the cryptic, spacey vibe of it. It's one of those songs where you can close your eyes and let it take you somewhere else.

IMO they really should have put it on Stars Die, because not too many people own On The Sunday of Life, and I think it's one of the most influential early songs on the band's sound. Anyway, great stuff.

Okay, so lyrics are up on the official site. The lyrics there now are the right ones. There were a few differences, mainly the word "Mogadon" which I've never heard of before, but according to Wiki is a drug "most often used to treat short-term sleeping problems (insomnia), such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings during the night, and early-morning awakening."

Porcupine Tree – Fear of a Blank Planet Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all, I'm gonna say that these lyrics are just what I can interpret. I know that parts of it are wrong, but I think I got most of it right. Hopefully when the album *actually* comes out the band will release official lyrics, but until then if anyone gets any different lyrics, definitely post them.

Lyrically, the song doesn't leave much to speculate about. It's a comment on modern American culture, or more specifically, the effect of said culture on today's youth. The song is written through the eyes of a troubled teenager, growing up saturated with violence and sex from the mass media and dependent on medication (Presumably anti-depressants, given the references to things like disconnection from friends and family and the overall dark outlook of the whole song). The title just reinforces my point, "Blank Planet" probably meaning a world dependent on technology and shallow, materialistic values.

Musically, the song is great. It's instantly become one of my favorite PT songs, and I can't wait to get the whole album when it comes out.
