In response to sweatersdotcom: Looking through some of your other comments, I was a little surprised: Radiohead, Bright Eyes, both are very talented. Then Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco. I'll give you some of my favorites before I go into why bands, such as Panic! are, quite simply, shitty bands. Sorry if I'm not being eloquent enough for your tastes. My favorites include, but are not limited to: Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut, The Mountain Goats, Elliot Smith, David Bazan, Regina Spektor, The Frames, The Decemberists, and CocoRosie. Now, for that rational argument you sought. I guess you could define music in various ways. I'll try to keep mine simple. Music, is what is heard through instruments, the voice, noise, anything that stimulates, good or bad, the auditory senses and causes thought among individuals. This is what I believe music is intended to be. As to the likes of Fall Out Boy and Panic! (I use these two examples because I notice they've been seen positively by you, and do not want to call into question bands that I may have interpreted to be of your liking) fitting this ideal of music... I would have to say that they try to take away, and manipulate this somewhat sacred, in my eyes, form of art. I don't believe the way you look, or how good you can do a cartwheel, or summersaullt, or what have you, influences your music. In fact, I see this as a spit on the face of music. So much so, that it takes away from the quality of the music in question. So, please, do not corrupt my lake with your sludge. Take it to the circus where it is one with the the other huge mounds of shit. Oh, and as for a more sound example of irony. Your implied definition of "out of your way" suggests that you do just the same thing as those you accuse of this. This site conveys the same open nature to all. If those you accuse of having favorites that are "probably terrible," are going out of their way to scrutinize "music" that you find to your liking, you are doing the same to them, except suggesting that they are idiots for doing this. So, scrutinizing others for scrutinizing, that would be irony, actually, you could specify that as Socratic irony. I guess that's all. |

Just as God resembles more of an idea of eternity in Two Headed Boy Pt. 2, so does Jesus Christ represent more of an universal idea of sorts... whatever it may be, birth, love... something. So, while not used in a completely religious scense, it does seem to be used in a spiritual sense. That's just me though |

I believe that this song is about how we come up with our ideals, and our beliefs, and then how some try to convince us that what we believe is wrong... just because it is not what they believe, or what they hold to be true and right. Also, the struggle to retain these ideals and protect them from the scrutiny of others. I also agree that it centralizes around Christian beliefs. This is only what I believe though... and don't claim it to be right at all. |
