Pinback – Thee Srum Proggitt Lyrics 13 years ago
I put the title through an Anagram shuffler, and there were quite a few to look through, but the favorite I found was: Emperor Tight Guts. Somehow, the idea of some constipated king fit this song pretty well.

No idea what the words are, but it makes me think of the HeLa cells.

I think of this song every time I see a burning sunset fade behind the hills outside my window.

Pinback – Grey Machine Lyrics 13 years ago
After learning about black holes releasing the information of what it consumes through entropy on the surface of its event horizon leading to the conclusion that the universe is the holographic representation of the total entropy of its surface, this song centered me again. I'm letting go, but it's still scaring me.

Pinback – Seville Lyrics 13 years ago
There's a character in the Dune series named Sheeana Brugh. As a child, her entire home and family is wiped out by a sandworm, but no worm will kill her. In fact, they will come to her call and stop for her to get on them. She plays a somewhat important role in the fifth and sixth books, eventually becoming a high ranking member of the Bene Gesserit after starting a revival cult on Arrakis.

I have no idea if she has anything to do with this song, but at a concert, the song was preceded by the statement "He who controls the spice controls the universe".

Broken Social Scene – Stomach Song Lyrics 14 years ago
Some boys I know
They speak with broken mouths
I have to sit inside their stomachs
To find out what they're really about

But not like the days
When the sky is blue
And all that I had
Was a little of me and a little of you

Some girls I know
They speak with broken mouths
I have to sit within their stomachs
To find out what they're really all about

Cause now a'days
All people want are pills
To help them learn to talk
To help them learn to feel

But they can't be their eyes
Several times I've seen them try
They know, they cant be their eyes

Some boys I know
They speak with broken mouths
I have to sit inside their stomachs
To find out what they're really about

Pinback – Hurley Lyrics 14 years ago
While it's true Lost began in 2004, the amount of similarities makes me quite suspect to either J.J. Abrams or some of the writers (possibly Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) being Pinback fans. A lot of characters have Pinback names, and a lot of scenes in Lost seem like they were inspired directly from a song. I'm gonna go see Pinback tonight at a local brewery, perhaps I'll get a chance to ask them about what they think about this whole Lost/Pinback thing!

A video game as a metaphor... These guys are just too much.

Andrew Bird – Anonanimal Lyrics 15 years ago
"The seemingly innocuous plecostomus
though posthumous
They talk to us
They talk too much"

Plecostomus are the algae suckers people have in their fish tanks to clean the walls. I suppose analyzing the death of one of those would tell us a lot about the tank's history, which might reflect our own history... It's a cute analogy, those little wall suckers always with their mouths at us as if trying to tell us something.

Yeasayer – Madder Red Lyrics 16 years ago
Sometimes it's hard to understand why someone loves you so much, especially when you feel like you're always doing the wrong thing or neglecting them. It's hard to say this song is completely literal in that the narrator is necessarily being a bad guy... The perspective is skewed. If he really was dishonorable, what remorse would he feel for wronging his lover? He just doesn't have confidence that he can do better, and feels she (implied gender, not enforced!) would be better off spending her time on someone who was already right for her. Relationships are complex.

Múm – Moon Pulls Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is not long enough. I absolutely love it, and have to put it on repeat for an hour to get enough of it. So simple, so dramatic, so perfect.

Talking Heads – Memories Can't Wait Lyrics 16 years ago
I take this song to be both metaphorical and completely literal. My mind runs constantly, and I am completely unable to shut it off, ever. Incessant thoughts become distractions; they keep me awake at night... It literally feels like there's a party going on in my skull, that will never stop until I'm dead. But, as the third stanza mentions, none of the thoughts are as good as might be hoped.

R.E.M. – Leave Lyrics 16 years ago
Some memories are just too painful.

REM will always be underestimated, underappreciated, and underrated by "popular media". That's part of their style. Some of it takes time to grow on you, but if you take the time, you'll eventually find something to latch on to in every album. The latest two albums haven't been what I had hoped for, but I know I'll connect with them some day, as I have with all the songs on the previous twelve. Some bands really are that good.

Donovan – Donna, Donna Lyrics 16 years ago
Uncharacteristically depressing, but still a beautiful song. I draw a herd mentality versus solo flight interpretation, wishing to go off on your own but sadly going with the group for no other reason than fear of ostracization. Despite the hopefully obvious oxymoron, many seem to continue to adopt this status in growing numbers, giving the song relevance decades later...

The Flaming Lips – Thirty-Five Thousand Feet of Despair Lyrics 17 years ago
One of the most depressing songs on the album... It really speaks to the idea of playing to a society that's degrading all around the people.

Brian Eno – Golden Hours Lyrics 17 years ago
"Here Come The Warm Jets" was titled because of the guitars in the song.... It has nothing to do with urination, nor does this song.

To me, this song always seemed to be about someone sitting in front of a TV, growing old and decaying, while useless miracles are performed on screen (Water to wine, saving grapes from being plucked) which are of no help at all. I'm sure it wasn't the intention of the song at all, but that's what I picture.

This was my favorite song for a long time. It has no given meaning, yet it means so much. It's purely beautiful.

The Flaming Lips – Why Does It End? Lyrics 17 years ago
I tried to get the lyrics as best I could from listening to the song, because they don't seem to exist anywhere else. This song reminds me (not musically) of another Flaming Lips song, Suddenly Everything Has Changed (Death Anxiety Caused by Moments of Boredom). It's another musing on mortality, but not just of people, but of everything.

I find comfort in this song, surprisingly. It's nice to know that you aren't the only one who must some day cease to exist... that everything else in this universe will end some day as well. It sort of makes me feel like I fit in with the rest of existence.

The Flaming Lips – The Wizard Turns On... the Giant Silver Flashlight and Puts On His Werewolf Moccasins Lyrics 17 years ago
I want some werewolf moccasins...

I think the title describes the song pretty well. One can imagine some old sorcerer waking up in the evening, grabbing his wand and shedding some light around. He puts on his slippers, and struts out to wherever the night takes him. Where he goes, what he does, and what happens to make him shout is all up to personal imagination.

Arcade Fire – In the Attic Lyrics 18 years ago
Sounds pretty straightforward to me. A natural disaster (tornado) hits, and all the nearby cities lose power. All narrated from the view of a young person who hid in the attic of their house.

TV on the Radio – Blues From Down Here Lyrics 19 years ago
I like sstennett's rendition, but I'd also like to mention the "Pull the pin, drop it in, let it wash away your" [Sin] reminds me more of baptism (water going down the drain when you pull out the plug) than of grenades.

Also:
"Oh kindness shared
Undeserved purest gift, this life you spared"
Kindness shared is the offer of religion, the "Undeserved purest gift" being life. The person's mother spared him from nonexistance, or it may be mockery, saying "Thank you for sparing me from a life without religion".

As far as I can tell, this doesn't have much to do with Labyrinth (which I've seen quite recently).
