I don't necessarily think that it's about a failed relationship, though it very well could be. My interpretation is that of each side of a relationship where each partner, most notably the guy, is too insecure to fully commit, if that makes sense. Sometimes we feel like we have to be somewhat fake or almost cruel to another in order to fully get them to love us in return. For example, a guy who acts like he is interested in one girl to get the girl he really likes to be jealous and therefore interested more in him. That's just my take on the song. Someone in such a position when really they just want to be completely open and vulnerable with that one person that matters most, they're just too scared.
Just my take, hope it makes sense to someone other than myself lol. Either way, the song musically is absolutely beautiful. |

first off, the CDs and songs rise against has put out over the last few years ( especially siren song and ts&tw) have made then one of the most commercially popular and sucessful punk bands ever. Therefore, if they wanted to sell out all they would have to do is make the same album they made in 06.
But no, just as with any band rise against's sound changes somewhat from album to album because they themselves change. Just because you may not like the new stuff as much as the old doesn't give you the right to jump all over the band. In fact I would say rise against has stuck to their guns as well as anybody these days. In a world of crappy music rise against Is one band who still knows what it means to make music that stands for something.
So next time a band puts out an album that doesn't sound exactly like their last one, don't be shallow and immediatly call them sell outs. If changing your sound from album to album was considered selling out then AC/DC would be the only band in history that has never sold out. |

amazingly beautiful song. needtobreathe is one of a very few who can write songs this beautiful. they are an awesome band.. that being said, i think this song is about one planning out his life.
one reason this song is so amazing to me is because i can relate to it so well. so often i find myself saying (to myself) that i am going to be bigger than just another life, i am going to make the world a better place, but sometimes as i look at this plan i think " what if i have planned this wrong, what if i'm not supposed to be that, what if i have wasted my life trying to be something i cant. if so, what now? have a thrown away my life? seldom second chances come along...
i could go on about this more, because i think it has a bit of something to do with another person, maybe a girl or a friend, but ill leave that to someone else, i just wanted to put my idea in there. |

i read yoshu's comment and made this conclusion ...
i think the whole idea of this song is based around suicide. the song is looking at the world from the point of view that sees the world for the hell hole it is. crap everyday and it seems there is no escape. i think the lines " the day i learn to fly, im never coming down" talks about when he commits suicide, when i he finally has enough of this world. he tried to enjoy this world but it was too much. he didnt fit it with the cuture around him.. "i threw a party in my name(tried to fit in), but the hours crawled by and no one came(couldnt fit in),... so i prayed for wings to take me from this place(had to escape somehow) from you (everyone)" i think thats the whole idea. he hates the world and wants to ezcape and is singing about the present as well as the future. he is suffering now but he is also singing of when he is flying among the clouds (gone) and watching the others who are still living on this wretched planet "keeping their fires lit" |

i think this song is just about how eddie sees religion. he's basically saying some people use it as a way to live clear headed and have a clean concious, but he's saying that its a load of bull. he's not gonna waste his life serving a god that he doesnt think is real. he is his and no one elses.

man, i just saw these guys at a praise band conference in atlanta. it was kinda like a private performance for about 150-200 people so they didnt really go "all out" with the show but man, these guys are pretty good for a christian band. i generally dont like christian music, i got nothing against it, its just not my style, but these guys really stand for what they sing about i got limitless respect for that. you could really tell at the conference mark hall(who has an awesome voice by the way) really believed in the words he sand and THAT is what music should be all about. so, anyway, just wanted to say that.. the meaning is kinda obvious so no point in commenting on it. but if you get a chance to see them live, im sure it wont be a waste of time. i mean, of course they cant compare to Pearl Jam or Soundgarden or anyone like that, but as far as a christian band, i cant see anyone who is better (except johnathan and lisa lol) |

i saw an interview with brent where he said the song was not necessarily about suicide, although you can take it like that if you want, its up to you. But, he said it was more about facing life everyday, waking up every morning and facing this world again and again its like starin down the barrel of a loaded gun.
this makes sense if you look at it like that. Everybody, especially the people who generally listen to shinedowns music, have moments when they feel like all hope is lost and this place is just torture, but we have to fight and keep going. Although living life each day is like "starin down the barrel of a forty-five" we still gotta keep going even when we feel like there is no point. |

yeah i think EphemeralArcs had a pretty good idea. this song is kinda hard to interpret, but to me i think it is about how he was beginning to drift to the ways of the world or the flow of everyone else, but he decides that he is going to go his own way and live his own life. im sure there is more to it, but thats just what i think.

anyway, i think this song is about a guy who sees the world for what it is and really dislikes it. he is talking to an old man who probably felt the same way as he grew up. But the old man (mean mr. mustard) tells the boy not to continue living angry at the world for what it is because there is nothing you can do about it. although very few people actually see the world for what it is, a cruel and corrupt place, there is still nothing we can do about it. So, mean mr mustard is telling the boy, "son, i was in the same position you are and i know how you feel. Dont live your life hating everything and not enjoying anything. dont try to fight it, just enjoy what you can, but dont conform." |

I think this song is about how everytime someone comes along who is a treat to the goverment, who could possibly lead a revolution, he is assassinated or eliminated.
this song is basically a wake up call to people to realize whats going on and saying, like many rage songs, that we need to stand up and fight for whats right.
i think the last line of the song "How long, not long cause what you reap is what you sow" is saying that when they murder the revolutionaries it should lead to an outrage and even bigger revolution. |

i think you guys already got the meaning down for the most part. i think its about people who call them selves fans because they know a few songs or because, at that time, grunge was the big thing.

dont get rage's message wrong. too many people call themselves rage fans because they are anti-goverment. ok, i agree, but RATM's reason for hating the goverment was because of how it uses other countries the keep itself going. in an interview, Zack de la Rocha said " we dont hate the goverment for how it treats us, we hate it because it is a machine that uses the blood of others to keep itself afloat."
So, if you hate the goverment because it wont let you smoke your pot and get drunk wherever you want to you're dumb. the U.S. goverment treats its citizens better than any country in the world does. RATM's purpose was to reveal what the rich goverments were doing wrong to the smaller countries. Screwing the small countries over just so they can "keep themselves afloat"
therefor, if you like rage because they stand against the goverment, have a reason for it. and if you like this song just because of the lines "**** you i wont do what ya tell me" you like it for the wrong reason. |

thats definatley not grunge, grunge is the farthest genre from sellouts you can possibly have.
