Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics 17 years ago
When I hear "We tend to bruise easily" it sounds like the narrator is trying to minimize her own bruises. Maybe her parents are abusive. Maybe she has bruises from being beaten.

Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought maybe the family of the narrator forces her to prostitute herself. That could be the illness/business. At parts of the song, it sounds like she might be confessing to a client.

Amanda Palmer – Ampersand Lyrics 17 years ago
Amanda's lyrics address a number of things and tell a number of stories all at once. I think it's difficult to completely decipher any of her songs.

I got to thinking this song might be a rejection of monogamy. It's just a thought; not my interpretation.

I just got The Virginia Companion. In it, Amanda explains what inspired this song and who Mrs. O is. You should all order The Virginia Companion. =D

I was only a seedling of a Danny Elfman fan when I first posted my interpretation of this song, but I think I understand it better now.

Yep. It is pretty funny.

Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not going to take the time to analyze every line.

It sounds like a kid who spends so much time playing video games, like Halo and Guitar Hero, that he forgets reality. He can't actually play guitar. He can't actually shoot people. It's all just a game, and that is what he is used to. Then this kid gets sent off to war, and he goes crazy because the real death, the real world, is difficult for him to conceptualize.

Amanda Palmer – Ampersand Lyrics 18 years ago
This song does talk about one specific relationship, but in general, its saying that you can't let your relationships define you. You are a whole person, with or without your significant other. Literally: "I am Amanda Palmer. I am a whole person. I am not half of Amanda & So-and-so."

Depeche Mode – Mercy In You Lyrics 18 years ago
Songs of Faith and Devotion is a very touchy-feely album. I was at FYE a while back and the guy working there even said "That album is good for getting it on".

It has already been established that Martin Gore is submissive (think Master and Servant, Behind the Wheel, etc.). The specific words in this song make it more profound and spiritual, but none the less, this is a sexual song. Its about a master/slave relationship. The slave is saying that they are disobedient because they love the punishment. They love having to beg for mercy and forgiveness. They love being so vulnerable.

At least thats how I took it.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm too lazy to read each comment or actually analyze this song, but I do love it.

When I'm not wearing my pervert cap and I hear the phrase "two-headed boy", I think of someone who leads a double life; has two identities or personalities. This could be from a mental illness or possibley a way to protect himself (from discrimination and whatnot).

The Dresden Dolls – Mrs. O. Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song, obviously. I always thought it was very profound, with a lot of great word play. My favorite line is "April trains may bring strange showers". I think thats a reference to the gas chambers used during the Holocaust.

Anyways, I'm currently in 10th grade and a couple of months ago, we finished reading All Quiet on the Western Front. One of the themes in the book was the Generation Gap. The younger generation felt betrayed and lied to by the older generation. I think this song is about the gap between generations. One generation can never connect with another because theres just no honesty. Lies can protect or hurt you, but in the long run, their effect is usually negative. This puts distance between people.

I also believe that its talking about the confusion someone might have when they find out some things they were told aren't true. Now what can they believe? If Santa Claus isn't real, does that mean this or that is also made up?

Depeche Mode – A Question Of Time Lyrics 18 years ago
I also think theres like an element of dominance and submission in there. >>

"It won't be long until you'll do
Exactly what they want you to"

And if the girl takes on the role of a submissive or even a sex slave, she'll be reduced to a mere object. The narrator of the song doesn't want to see that happen.

I also think DeathRockBoy is a butt face. I prefer lyrics to be more profound, more racey, more taboo. If you can make it sickening, thats even better. I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Eh, crap. It posted twice. Oh well.

I also want to say that I agree with gcortes's interpretation of the song.

Depeche Mode – A Question Of Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Alright, since my friend Angel and I have declared this our theme song, I'm going to say what it means to me. Angel is a male, btw.

Alright, I'm promiscuous. I'm also pretty young. Angel and I are very close friends and are regularly physically intimate with each other. We both also have sexual and romantic interest in other people. Among our circle of friends, I've been labeled as the whore. Angel has told me that he wants me for himself and he also wants to keep me from throwing my life away. He says that if I keep acting like a whore, people won't see the other things I'm good for. He also doesn't want me to be used or hurt.

So basically, the guy in this song has sexual interests in the girl he is speaking to. The girl is also the object of desire for several other men. The man wants to protect her from the men who only want her for sex. Although he himself wants to fuck this young lady, he also respects her as a person and acknowledges her fragility.

I didn't word that as best as I could but whatever.

Oingo Boingo – Not My Slave Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually, after listening to this song about 20 times in the course of 2 days, it doesn't really sound like a dom talking to a subby. It sounds like someone is talking to a victim of rape and possibley domestic abuse. I've talked with rape victims and relationships are especially difficult for them, particularly physical relationships. It could also be someone who isn't into the BDSM scene talking to an experienced subby, telling her he just wants her love and does not want her as a sex slave.

Oingo Boingo – Nasty Habits Lyrics 19 years ago
I think he is mocking society and how it makes everything taboo (particularly our "nasty habits"). People shouldn't have to keep everything a secret. Everyone has their own kinks and habits.

I think this might be Danny's way of saying the world is going to the dogs (or insects, rather).

Oingo Boingo – Not My Slave Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, if you want a literal interpretation, this sounds like a dom (dominant) talking to a subby (submissive). He is telling her that he wants her for his own, but as a life partner, not a sex slave. He's not used to feeling this strongly about someone and neither is the subby. He is trying to explain how much he really cares. If you're not into BDSM, you probably wouldn't think to interpret this literally.

Well, when Danny explains why he wrote a song, you're not gonna say thats a bunch of bull shit cause he wrote the song!

However, I also think this song could defend pedophiles. They can't help what they feel. Pedophiles and other sexual minorities are wrongly persecuted all the time. And just cause a pedophile is with a young girl, does not mean she is a victim. There is something you call a teleiophile. Not to mention, pedophile is not synonymous with child molestor. There is a big difference.

The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about two things. Well, first of all, it is about sex toys. Everyone knows damn well that the only person who can pleasure you best, is indeed yourself. Also, lonely people tend to masturbate more. The girl this song speaks of is lonely and has trouble with relationships. She seeks comfort in sex toys and masturbation but longs for something more.
