Hank Williams – I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry Lyrics 19 years ago
Can you imagine the pain that he was feeling when he wrote this song? I don't want to know. But I thank God that he could describe it.

Bob Dylan – Ballad in Plain D Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. I have listened to it for a couple hours straight several times. There is something about it that makes it my favorite Dylan work. "I gagged in contradiction/tears blinded my sight"

it doesn't get much sadder than that.

Keith Whitley – I'm Over You Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a song that George Jones could have sang. It's very similar to "She Thinks I Still Care". The narrator really isn't over the loss, though he's trying to make the woman believe he is. He's denying everything he's been doing to get rid of her memory. It's a classic country song.

The Flying Burrito Brothers – My Uncle Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a classic anti-war song. It was written after Gram received a letter in the mail about the draft. He was upset about it so he and Chris Hillman sat down and wrote a song about it. Steve Earle has done a cover of it and it's pretty good. He's a modern day Gram Parsons.

Written about a Christine. It was originally entitled "Christine's Tune", but was changed after Christine died.

Gram Parsons – Sin City Lyrics 19 years ago
This song may be thought to be about Las Vegas, but it's not. It's about L.A. What gives it away is the mention of the earthquakes. I think that the first verse suggests gambling, but it could be more complex. I'm not sure who the friend who came around was. I used to think it could be mario savio but i'm not sure. it could also be about martin luther king jr, but i don't think so.

Gram Parsons – A Song For You Lyrics 19 years ago
Dylan has never covered any of Gram's material. Although he did say in the late sixties and early seventies that the Burrito Brothers were his favorite band. I'm sure he's familiar with Gram's solo stuff. You should listen to the new album that got released this summer. There's a one minute or so track that Gram talks about what this song means. I'd write it down but each of you will be much happier if you find out for yourself and go by the boxed set. It's called "The Complete Reprise Sessions" and can be found at Best Buy.

Gram Parsons – Return Of The Grievous Angel Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes he is definately talking about Elvis Presley. The turning point in Gram's life was when we saw Elvis in concert. That was when he knew he wanted to be a musician.

Gram was often referred to as the "Grievous Angel". I think that this song was written about himself. Gram spent most of his childhood grieving. His father committed suicide when he was young and his mother also died before adulthood. This song is biographical.

It's a beautiful song and is often overlooked.

Gram Parsons – Brass Buttons Lyrics 19 years ago
Brass Buttons is a song that Gram wrote about his mother. She was in the hospital with some sort of disease from alcohol. Potentially liver cancer. But she died in the hospital. There was a conspiracy theory that Gram's step-dad gave her alcohol in the hospital and that was what killed her. No one knows for sure. But this song was written by Gram before his days with the Byrds or the International Submarine Band. It eventually ended up on "Grievous Angel"

Gram Parsons – $1000 Wedding Lyrics 19 years ago
I really like this song. It's probably my favorite Gram Parsons song. He was a superb songwriter and I think that there is a verse in the song that is often over looked. "and he swore the fiercest beasts
could all be put to sleep the same silly way" is some sort of a prophecy. Gram knew how he'd leave this world. I think that the fiercest beasts he was talking about were the great musicians before him who had died of drug overdoses. "put to sleep" means to die and "the same silly way" means a drug overdose.

it's very easy for listeners to look over little lines like that. i did dozens of times before i thought of that.

Willie Nelson – Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain Lyrics 19 years ago
All I can say is that Fred Rose must have been feeling like Hank Williams when he wrote this song. I'm not sure exactly what year he wrote this, but there is a bootleg recording out there of Hank Sr. playing this song. It's wonderful. Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain is a classic tale of love lost. I'm not sure the circumstances of the split between the two parties. It sounds like it's mutual. Though I'm not sure that either of these people wanted to leave, but they must have known it wouldn't work out. Another beautiful version is Shania Twain's. Willie plays guitar and sings harmony on it. It's wonderful.
