What's not to get... I was faintly expressing apparent ridicule ;)

While you've certainly proved your point, does it take you ten years to form every apt reaction?

I'm wondering if maybe you should've followed your own (fairly egotistical) asinine recommendation.

The New Pornographers – The Laws Have Changed Lyrics 13 years ago
Great catchy and clever song. I like Perpetual Peace's interpretation of the lyrics.

The music video appears to be working on a whole different level though.

Anyone able to intrepet the video's meaning, in particluar the captions appearing in the second half?

Guy hands barman a photo.
Barman: What you have already lost, consider as totally lost.

...
Girl: What are you thinking about?

Guy: What is this dance called?

Girl: "The Electric Version"
Girl: Vade retro! Vade ultra!
Girl: You'll just have to take it.
Girl: Take it 'til the end!

Girls starts a synchronised dance routine with others on dance floor, beckoning Guy to follow. He does.

Sounds like the singer is paying out on someone who is out of control with their substance abuse.

Bertie Blackman – Thump Lyrics 14 years ago
from: http://www.bertieblackman.com/news/bertie-releases-thump-singlevideo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
For Bertie Blackman, 'Thump' captures that "feeling of walking home late at night; your footsteps hit the pavement and your whole body pulsates. You become really aware of your breath and heartbeat."

Bertie says: "Sometimes you're walking home and you think someone might be following you and they're not; it's just the echo of your footsteps. That's what this single is all about."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

To me though, the song sounds like a woman who is longing for some lovin'.

"And you're all I want, Come here, come here"
...
"And inside my space, Is a hidden place
I don't want to wait, Cause I'm always waiting"

The prominent use of elk antlers throughout the video clip seems a not-so-subtle hint of all things 'horny' too ;)

Great song in any case!

The last time I 'licked up a dream', effects were starting to kick in nicely and I'd decided to whack on the headphones and listen to some music... this was the first song that came on the radio! :) The song was very new at the time, and though I'd probably heard it a couple of times before without paying too much attention. This time I really "heard" it! I of course found it hilariously coincidental and/or meaningful that a song with such subject matter just happened to be the first one to come on the radio. Just try and imagine how 'trippy' it was to hear the voice asking repeatedly "if you're feelin' that way now" ... Ahh you crazy universe, I thought! ;)

Quite a few incorrect lyrics are listed, some of which I'll correct below.

"Oh we stretch inside and bend in the middle, But we never ever break"
I take this as a reference to the way certain substances can bend and expand your mind to various new ways of thinking, only to eventually return you to near enough your previous 'normal' state of mind unharmed, but not necessarily unchanged.

"Syd was at the gates of dawn"
Syd Barret was a renowned tripper.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is Pink Floyd's debut album and the only one made under Syd Barrett's leadership.
[ from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Piper_at_the_Gates_of_Dawn ]

"And Jim he said ride the snake"
Jim Morrison (also a renowned tripper) from the song 'The End' [ http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/4928/ ]

"Lick up a dream that seemingly sings with whistling neon death"
The word 'breath' is only changed to 'death' for the last line of the song.
An apt way to end the song, and perhaps another reference to ego death (along with the references to 'losing your name')

To be honest, I first found it offensive that the song was being used for a car ad,
but have too come to find it quite amusing. Especially given that the ad is kind of trippy in its own way ;) [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjQrApTOW-M ]

Anyway, great song... All the more impressive when you consider it's this young band's debut!

Yep I agree with the general gist of all this.

I get the distinct impression that this song's actually about fear... You can tell by the way fear's emphasised and repeated ;)
