| Blink-182 – Natives Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I have been going to songmeanings for a few years now but have only posted a few times but theres a lot about this song that I want to share. From the first time I heard this song I had to have it on repeat, it was something that literally made sit still and just listen to the music. I am 20 and have gone through a lot in the previous years, well this song was something that seems to put all my troubles and anxiety to song. The line "I am the prodigal son, a shameful prodigy too" was quite powerful to me. After high school I entered into a top tier university in California (will not be named) and a lot of family hope was placed on me. My brother graduated from the same school and is now a successful engineer and the same (even more so since I have had higher grades in high school) was expected of me and it just blew up in my face. I had manic-depression the whole time I was in school and was just frustrated with everything that was going on in my life (from the demands of school, a failing relationship, lack of motivation). All the anticipation, hope, and issues started building up and I finally just decided to transfer out to a different school, a decision that baffled a lot of people. This song spoke directly to me. It seems to be about a person whose gone off the "correct road" and yet it is better for them. By taking a risk and abandoning what it is expected of you yet at the same time living with that knot in your stomache. "We'll have the time of our lives although we're dying inside" is an example of this, I am at my new school yet there are moments where I wonder if I made the right decision and wonder if this is right. The anxiety, the frustration and finally the need to go choose your own destiny, regardless of what could happen. Blink-182! |

| Four Year Strong – Wasting Time (Eternal Summer) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Incredible song that brings back memories. TO me, like RuthLess has said is about the best summere ever with a girl you can never forget. It reminds me of my summer after graduating high school, parents finally letting go and letting me spend the night hanging out with my friends and girlfriend, it was just a different experience, being out on the streets at night for the first time and pretty much seizing the moment. It was a summer that where nothing seems to happen (thus the term wasting time) but it was something we wanted to be eternal. | |
| Against Me! – I Was a Teenage Anarchist Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I have been an Against Me! fan ever since I first heard Baby, I'm An Anarchist all those years ago and it has been amazing to see the band grow over time. For this, I would like to compare to another band.. Brand New. Brand New began with "Your Favorite Weapon" which was mainly pop-punk and as the band members got older, their sound takes a much more serious tone and mature. For example, most of your favorite weapon consisted of high school problems while Deja Entrendu was about the next stage, experiencing the real world for the first time and their most reason album daisy seems to be a much darker and deeper tone. Against Me! is undergoing a similar manner, people grow up and thier ideaology change, are you the same person you were 5 years ago? In Axl Rose, the band was much more "punk" in both their sound and attitude but guess what, they grew up. It happens all the time, Blink-182 for example, a band that had a song with lyrics like "I want to fuck a dog in the ass" grew up to write a beautiful masterpiece in their untitled album. I feel bad for Tom, a lot of his "fans" are afraid of growing up and they want their music to stay the same forever. This song to me is Tom pretty much saying "yes I felt that way a long time ago but time and experience changed me, deal with it" |

| Four Year Strong – catastophe Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
TO me its about a guy who really likes a girl and he finally got up the balls to ask her to a big event (possibly a big dance like prom) your always runnin around with everyone else but me your such a catastrophe but hold on youve been running for o' so long and soon ill be gone (shes been dating everyone but him and shes kinda a mess, wild and such but shes getting tired and he sees it. he reminds her that his senior year of high school is almost over and hes heading away soon) save your breath and get down with me i never thought it would be this easy to spread you like a disease in this heat you'll be sweating out your dignity youll always be sucha catastrophe (first line, I think its just the guy saying "lets hang out and dance with me" and he realizes it wasn't that hard '"never thought it would be this easy to spread you like a disease" to get her to go to prom with him and meet all his friends. in this heat you'll be sweating out your dignity to me is her just going crazy on the dance floor and sweating) and im making a list of all your so called big plans and im really having trouble cuz its longer than the strech of my attention span wait what were we talkin about again (they get carry away in conversation and she tells him all her plans for the future) and how about yourself and do you have what it takes to raise the stakes and show you have it in you to just pick up and go give me a reason to see things through untill the end because im on to you im gonna need a shovel to dig myself outta this one (this part is mainly about their relationship and how she too will just pick up and go and by having feelings for her, the guy is just digging a hole for himself) |

| Kid Cudi – The Prayer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Great song... what I got out of this song is the rapper Kid Cudi reflecting on his life and success. Cudi realizes that he is not a mainstream rapper and he might never be. This is supported during the part about the "apple bottom jeans and boots with the fur", a potential jab at Flo Rida for commericializing rap. The chorus to me represents that Cudi is ready for a symbolic funeral, that is the death of his mainstream career. At the end of the song, I don't know if anyone notices it but the riff and beat from "Day n Night" starts playing. What is interesting about this song is that it recieved a very limited release yet it is widely heard and extremely popular. To me, this shows that Cudi is in to express himself and he does not care if no one remembers him if he dies. However at the end, when "day n Night" starts, it seems to befrom the perspective of a true fan. After Cudi is gone, he will be remembered by those who appreciate him and his music, he will be remembered for more than just a song about material wealth Cough flo rida cought | |

| Against Me! – Baby, I'm an Anarchist! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
"do you remember '36, we went our separate ways, you fought for stalin and i fought for freedom." This has to do with Spain being an Anarchist nation, the Anarchists fought against Hitler and Stalin's forces, this is before WWII broke out entirely. |

| The Color Fred – Complaintor Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The song is about Fred's time in TBS and how he stayed with them for the friends. A lot of the lines referred to it being a "suicide" which to me means he CHOSE to be in the band but didn't like it. To how Adam behaved, I cannot say since I have never met him but I have met Jesse Lacey at the Warped Tour when he was getting a soda and John Nolan at a private Straylight Run Concert. These 2 were very friendly funny guy, especially Jesse who went out of their way to get me an autograph. I remember not having a pen and Jesse not having one either, he told me "wait here, I'll be back." I thought he took off for good but came back moments later with a Brand New poster signed by all band members. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Big Casino Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Jimmy Eat World returns with a bang, this is easily one of Jimmy Eat World's best though in my opinion "Kill" was their best song. I think the song is about how JEW looks back, they realized that they were lucky to have succeeded "When they draw my name from the lottery" and also how they say they were a New Jersey success story. A lot of part of the song is about how they feel on how lucky they are to get away. To have girls "pray that I can touch that hand" going all crazy for them and also how they never had any information on how to deal with that. The other part is to all the new bands, to get up and don't give up hope. Just keep doing what you're doing and if its your time, its your time and you're gonna be big. Just don't give up. JEW is now more mature, this song is them telling their success story and to tell all these aspiring bands, keep going and if you're lucky you're gonna get to where I am. Beautifully done. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is a great SP song, although the meaning is hard to interpret. I believe that Billy Corgan wrote about his own childhood but my own take on it is as followed: I get the image of a soldier who wanders through a warzone and sees all these children without families and homes, lying all over the streets. He thinks to himself about the past and how he used to be a little boy like them. The most powerful line I believe is "A killer in me is a killer in you" refers to how if someone doesn't help them, they become the killer. That didn't make sense but I see it as that same solder thinking to himself "by not helping these kids, I'm becoming a killer and when they grow up, they're gonna rememebr not being helped and turned into "killers" themselves" |

| Arcade Fire – Keep the Car Running Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I see a lot of great meanings and points, especially the ones about the rapture. To me though, the song has a different meaning. I find that song appears to be more or less about leaving your loved one behind to go towards your destiny. I get the image of a guy with his girlfriend but he can't seem to live in the town they're in. He leaves her though he doesn't want to, to find his destiny and what he was meant for. I also think he left her in the middle of the night or unexpected since the draw was just too much for him. "Keep The Car Running" to me refers to someone not wanting to settle down, like park the car but keep it running. You still want to go explore some more and so keep the car running just in case. |

| (+44) – Chapter 13 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think the song is about a guy who fails to get the girl of his dreams, this leads him to messing up his life and being angry. It leds him to thinking thoughts of suicide but in the end, things will only get better if he can drift away from her. And my heart aches from this news (A guy heard news from his friends that the girl of his dreams doesn't like him) Like your footsteps in crowded rooms (Guy is at a party, he sees the girl there as well) Feel the sweet scents of autumn blooms (He remembers when things were normal between him and her, like back in autumn) Is this what you imagined? (He askes himself, is him and her being apart what he imagines) Caught your glimpse from an empty stare (His eyes and her eyes meet at the party) Hidden eyes behind your auburn hair (Others at the party are watching the two of them staring at each other) Catch my breath for the smoke to clear (He holds himself, nervous until the two of them no longer sees each other) And it's just as it should be (Things are how he thinks they belong) My best laid plans (He thinks a lot) Will build and break your heart (He wants to both be with her and make her feel bad for not wanting him) Her guilty hands (He thinks its her fault for his situation) Tear my whole world apart (Its cause of her his world is fucked up) My mind keeps racing (He thinks some more) She's softly dreaming (She's still in his dreams but only softly) I'm scraped and sober (He's hurt and comes to his senses) But there's no one listening (Though he feels theres noone who undertsands him) And we'll wake up in vacant rooms (He wakes up with thoughts of her) Pull you close to my aching skin (He thinks of her, as if she's next to him) Broken glass on the porcelain (He notices what a mess his room is) Is this what you imagined? (He asks himself if him not being with her led him to living such a crappy lifestyle) We'll forget what we used to say (He remembers how they would use to just talk) And our lives won't mean anything (The past of being friendship now doesn't mean anything) Pull me close as I drift away (He wants to be close to her again but he knows the two friends are drifting away) And it's just as it should be (It was all for the best, not meant to work out) And we'll both take our revenge (They'll now be apart, the guy will try and make the girl jealous) But we still don't feel any better (Though he knows he can't deny his thoughts for her) |

| (+44) – Baby Come On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
My take on a great song "She's a pretty girl She's always falling down And I think I just fell in love with her But she won't ever remember, remember And I can't always find her At the bottom of a plastic cup Drowning in drunk sincerity A sad and lonely girl" There's a guy and a girl, the guy has known the girl for a long time. Ultimately he falls in love with her. However, she always falls for idiots and she never remembers how the guy has always been there for her "Quit crying your eyes out Quit crying your eyes out and baby, come on Isn't it there's something familiar about me? The past is only the future with the lights on Quit crying your eyes out baby" The girl got dumped and the guy is by her side supporting her, he tells her to stop crying over those jerks. He then tells her how he feels. He is saying that he is part of her past so why can't he be part of her future as well? He tells her that by now she should be familiar with how good of a friend he is to her. "And she said I think we're running out of alcohol Tonight I hate this fucking town And all my best friends will be the death of me But they won't ever remember, remember So please take me far away Before I melt into the ground And all my words get used against me A sad and lonely girl" She then responds to him saying how she hates the town they live in and drinking is the only thing that can make life livable. All her old boyfriends made her feel bad and want to commit suicide "My best friends will be the death of me" and if she dies no one would care. The guy realizes just how much of a problem she is, shes a sad and lonely girl. "Quit crying your eyes out Quit crying your eyes out and baby, come on Isn't it there's something familiar about me? The past is only the future with the lights on Quit crying your eyes out baby" Once again, the guy consoles her and tells her that he will be there for her. She should be familiar by now that he will always be there. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Kill Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This song is just, beyond believe. One of Jimmy Eat World's best. To me this song is about 2 people, Guy A and Girl A. Guy A has feelings for Girl B, he's too weak to ask her out and on the inside hes dying, wanting to tell her how he feels. She sends him signals though she didn't mean it. When he ddoes have the courage to do so, shes gone... move away. Guy A is sitting down thinking about what he should have done, should have told her he loved her. He thought of what she did, she build him up by giving him all these signals but in the end he knows the right thing to do is move on but he just couldn't, | |
| Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
By far the best song on the new album. To me this song is about a person growing up, their friend's are dying and they're afraid of what comes next. They wonder if they lived a good enough life, they believe that if it would take a miracle for them not to go to hell. "If they don’t put me away, well it’ll be a miracle." The person at the end though, they're finally accepting death. They have had time to realize they are dying and now was time to let go. " know you'll come in the night like a thief. But I’ve had some time alone, to hold my lions at bay." Just my take on the song |
