hey guys, this is from "New Metal Crown" a biography about soundgarden. Chris talked about how this song is so often construed as anti-religion or anti-anything in particular, quite the contrary. ironically enough the song is about pressing any belief on any person in particular too fiercely, "'Holy Water' is just more of a poetic way of saying i don't appreciate having anybody's ideas thrust upon me like their baggage... [it] is going to be taken, literally as religion. But it isn't; it's anything. Vegetarianism or political ideas, or any kind of idea. new age-ism, anything. I think when people offer you these things, especially if they offer it to you aggressively, then they're assuming that you're confused and unhappy. But to me, that's insulting. And that's what the song is based on. ism-ism" perfect. thought i was all alone for thinking that no matter your stance, it's always rude to treat the other person as ignorant or unhappy just because they don't necessarily "believe" your side of the argument. thanks Chris |

from a psychoanalytical perspective, the song could be translated as a song about giving into a mother figure that it trying to seduce her child. Drawn in Kneeling, scraping, praying - at first there's reluctance Her lips glisten Anticipate Glisten -but she's still tempting Fall into The burning noise and sting - an analogy for giving into her temptations Her jaws dripping Sockets glowing Glisten - another metaphor for her attraction to her child That reach hasn't reached me Her machine has reached me (She's) Waiting for me to give in Waiting for me to cease - a final statement about the futility of struggle anyways, just my interpretation. |

| The Smashing Pumpkins – Superchrist Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| how is there only one comment on this song? it's an amazing song, especially if the "new" pumpkins left you feeling a little empty inside. great riff, excellent drumming and above all else a hot bass line that chugs for the entire song. strongly suggest getting your hands on this gem from an amazing band during a questionable period in their legacy or should i say "his" legacy | |

ok this is just me thinking about it a little too much: it sounds like a song chris wrote about getting out of bed after a one night stand and the girl waking up as he's leaving her place. the first few lines are about sneaking away before she wakes up (hide in the hours before sunrise). she says goodbye or "prayes for him" and he doesn't care because he knows he's not coming back (I won't lose sight of where I belong and where you lie). he gives her two lines to make her feel better, real cheesy "i still like you" lines (Heaven's dead when you get sad, I see your wishes fly). but what he's really thinking is that she'll never get to sleep with him again (Out of time for the best time you've had). he gives her a few more boyfriend lines, still trying to convince her he'll come back (Shipwreck the sun, I'm on your side An army of one, onward we'll ride And whisper your songs, birds to the air We'll bury all of our burdens there). he keeps repeating to himself that he's not coming back and at one point (probaby during the solo... lolz) he realizes he can't leave her. chris realizes he still loves her (Ill take it all, arrows or guns Hundreds or more to save you from one Save you from one And Where Ill be, Heavens dead when you get sad). obviously not true, just another, very interesting, way of looking at the lyrics and how they flow together |
