Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell Lyrics 4 years ago
Wow surprised no one has picked this apart yet. My favorite from the album, this is just loaded with symbolism. Here's some stuff I looked up that I think fits pretty well.

Dead horse: symbolizes something that once gave you strength but then failed you.

Meadowlark: messengers, bringers of change.

Horsefly: symbolizes masculinity? Couldn't find too much about this.

Pear tree: symbolizes motherhood and fertility.

Dido's lament: famous classic lament, sang before she dies

Erebus: darkness and death personified

Thorazine is a drug used to treat a lot of symptoms like vomiting or nausea

Opals: symbolize hope or inner change for the better

Mayfly: symbolizes inner change and growth, also childhood and innocence

Ephemera: it's a Latin name for a genus of mayfly

Broken arm: in dreams this symbolizes a perceived inability to help oneself or loved ones

So given all that, and the context of the album, it's pretty clear this song is an exploration of sufjan's mother's absence, sickness, return and death altogether.

"adding shadows to the walls of the cave"

nice reference to plato's allegory of the cave.

Iron & Wine – Lovers' Revolution Lyrics 6 years ago
Still sounds like wimper to me. Don't hear the 'R' sound at all. And it's definitely "lay restless by the riverside", sorry... I do agree it's really hard to tell what he says after trophies, taught us sounds closest but doesn't really make much sense. Also, "washing milk"? Doesn't make any sense but that's what it sounds like.

alt-J – Fitzpleasure Lyrics 6 years ago
I dunno, I disagree. The song does sound pretty dark, as much of their music does. They obviously take their art really seriously, and something like this is pretty heavy, so I can see why it moved the artist to write about it. Just because it's different from the way you initially interpreted it doesn't mean that it glorifies gang rape. There are plenty of songs about drug addiction, or suicide, etc. that don't glorify those things but simply use them as the basis for a work of art that explores that subject.

Corrections, going by what I heard:

I came to you and you to me
And we were tapping on the window at the children when the piggy bank broke
Pitching quite a fit
'Bout how the makers of the medicine will always say you're looking sick

I came to you and you to me
And we would wimper to the women (washing milk?) above their former white clothes
But the funny thing
Is how when God was with his people we were dreaming bout who else to be
And all the fingers that we damaged when all we wanted was a diamond ring

I came to you and you to me
And we were barking at the drug dogs blood dried black on their hands
And never realized
You never tussle with a giant til you can hit him right between the eyes
That no matter how we chewed it we'd be choking on a compromise
'Cause all the jaws all the claws lay restless by the river side
And it was a muscle and a shadow that was shoving us into the light

I came to you and you to me
And we were scratching at a poor baby's bottle just to trade it for change
And now it's come to pass
That every eye beneath a mountain saw the smoke but no one heard the blast
That no one knew the arm was broken although everybody signed the cast
Until the government was good she said, "Man, I thought you'd never ask"
And when love wore out her welcome they just booked her for a bag of grass
And while she cried on the cross we were sucking all the laughing gas
And when the head had left the body not a flag was hanging half mast

[instrumental break]

(I came to you) (I came to you)

I came to you and you to me
And then we lost our own lovers' revolution but it started again
Now we're one

One of the parade waned widows walking home into the setting sun
One of the soldier's lost, in their dreams they never lose the gun
One of the wise men wandering the podium without a tongue
One of the trophy's (taught us?) by the mess we made of being young
One of the prayers one of the promises swallowed with our chewing gum
One of the deaf ear's dumber all the time for all the years of drums
One of the the wide eyed soap-boxers buried under washington
One of the beat cops combing every sidewalk crack for love
One of the crowded stars uncounted when the bag was done
One of the withered and the guarded love to wonder when the rain will come

This song is strangely creepy to me...
I love it.

I was thinking the same thing, prussian... the reflection on earlier times, and the sense of something lost or past. It's incredibly nostalgic.

Iron & Wine – No Moon Lyrics 10 years ago
I think he uses a lot of the same imagery to symbolize different things... this song I think is about a loss of innocence. "Sold my soul like a pocket knife".... "Sold my soul and I laid her down"... and then the line "There'll be no milk as sweet", like it can't ever be as good as that first time. Just my thoughts.

Puscifer – Indigo Children Lyrics 12 years ago
Anyone who thinks maynard is selling out with puscifer is uninformed. He's taken the whole thing on himself, without a record label, to see if he can do it. If anything, he's going to lose money this way, as this album has little to know advertising and isn't readily available at your local Wal-Mart or target. I don't really like puscifer as much as most people do, because I think it is the most crass and immature piece of art maynard has produced. It's still alright, though, and I listen to a couple of songs every now and then. Good luck waiting on a new Tool album. Hope it happens.

Coheed and Cambria – The End Complete III: The End Complete Lyrics 12 years ago
I like the theory that Cambria is back. All through the album, I kept thinking that he MUST be talking to cambria... but always thought, "but - she's dead!" so the idea that she is back, somehow, feels right. Even if it's only Claudio conjuring her in his mind, I think that a lot of the dialogue on this album is coming from her. The whole song, "Mother Superior", who else could that be talking? And of course, she was The Knowledge... "I am the knowing, the living dead"... very cool.

Iron & Wine – White Tooth Man Lyrics 12 years ago
awesome comments! wow. i really agree with everything everyone has said so far... i think the song altogether is about the type of people who take something that is supposed to be sacred and cheapen it. the plain-clothes cop is likely someone who shoots people down without justification, therefore he acts like a cop but isn't one, doesn't actually wear the uniform. and btw, i wonder what dogs symbolize in this album? there are SO many references to dogs...

can anyone put up the lyrics for the songs on this album that aren't up? i'm really bad at discerning words. those songs are "Wolves (Song of the Shepherd's Dog)", "The Devil Never Sleeps", and "Peace Beneath the City".

Iron & Wine – House by the Sea Lyrics 12 years ago
I think that he has changed, for certain, but who doesn't? and if he didn't, his style would get old, and people would be bored. I'm not saying one style is better than the other, just that change is necessary. And also, the thematic material of this album is drastically different from previous albums, and he sings to be targeting subjects of a global scale, as opposed to the quiet, intimate themes that he has tackled in the past, such as love, life, feminism and mortality. The music fits the message here, as always.

Iron & Wine – Innocent Bones Lyrics 12 years ago
Although the music is soft and delicate, the lyrics are slightly cold. This song is about modern day organized Christianity, and it is chock full of metaphors, not all of which I understand... favorite line is "There's a big pile of innocent bones still holding up the garden wall", because it seems to say, what price did we pay for what we have today? How many innocent people have been slaughtered in the name of god and christ, in order for the church to exist? That's kind of what this song is about for me.

Islands – Rough Gem Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's foolish to say that the songs on this album don't have any meaning. There are several low-key references made throughout the entire thing. Swans is a reference to the myth that swans sing one beautiful song before they die; don't call me whitney, bobby obviously refers to whitney houston and bobby brown; volcanoes refers to the theory that the apocalypse will be caused by super-volcanoes... I could go on, but my point is made. I don't think they would throw in the line "It's the mines in africa that are to blame" for no reason. I'm not saying that's what the entire song is about, but it is definately part of the picture.

Islands – Swans (Life After Death) Lyrics 13 years ago
It's a well known myth that swans don't sing until the day they die, at which point they sing a beautiful song.

The silver Swan, who living had no Note,
when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat.
Leaning her breast upon the reedy shore,
thus sang her first and last, and sang no more:
"Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes!
"More Geese than Swans now live, more Fools than
Wise."
-Orlando Gibbons

Just thought I'd point that out.
